I did a search on this forum for 3d and I found a lot of discussions based on starcraft 2. I also found some discussion on some movies and the nintendo 3ds. but what I didn't find was discussion on some of the 3d ready software that is out there whether it being in TVs or computers or game consoles or monitors...etc.
what I want this thread to be about is
#1... if you do have experience with 3D capable software, could you share some of your opinions?
#2... what, if any, news is there for 3D becoming mainstream and not just a niche thing
or
#3... is 3D just a niche thing and what factors or trends are going to make 3D a fad for 5 years and nothing more?
#4... 3D isn't new. I mean, how many ways can you reinvent it? are we in an era where 3D will make a huge surge into our everday lives?
hopefully this will be an educational thread. thanx.

I think once they get rid of the 3d glasses it'll be much more of a draw. It is a pain to wear the glasses every time you want to see 3d...

If you want to see shit in 3D, go outside.

I actually can't see 3D things cause of some shit with my eyes, so I don't care :D

Well last year I bought the nvidia 3D vision glasses kit, and I love it. It makes you feel like you're looking through a window into the game world, like you're THERE, instead of looking at just a flat picture of it. It should also be noted that you can happily tweak settings to your liking; the default depth for example (recommended for new starters), is 15%. 100% depth is enormous - far far more depth than you get at the "flat" 3D at cinemas. I couldn't care much for the 3D at cinemas, I find that games are far better suited to it than film. I don't find the glasses bugging at all when playing - you're far too involved in the game to notice to them. It makes such a big difference to the atmosphere and the feel of some games - I can't tell you the number of times I've played through Left 4 Dead or Portal again simply because I was having so much fun with the goggles on.
It's not just new games or those "3D vision ready" titles that work in 3D either - we're not playing on consoles here people. Some games have 3D artifacts that cannot be fixed by tweaking graphics settings, but by and large EVERY directX game will work. Many of the very old openGL ones too; just a few weeks ago I replayed Quake 2 (a 14 year old game!) and it was flawless in 3D. And for those games that don't work you've always got the bonus of a 120Hz screen to play them on making things smooooth to look at.
I'm glad I saw this thread early which means my post is more visible, as I'm sure 90% of this thread will soon be filled up with people posting how stupid they think 3D is without ever having actually tried it for gaming. All I can say is I think they're really missing out.

I find it ironic how LG is a major sponsor of SC2 tournaments, but you cannot use their screens for playing StarCraft in 3D (only nVidia active-shutter glasses and compatible screens are supported)
