Also, yes, you don't need SLI for CUDA, just having the two is fine. (In some situations SLI actually causes problems in computation.)
Thanks for all your help!

For CUDA programming, i.e. your own programs, I'd assume you're fine with any Nvidia card? However, a GTS 450 is still enough to play SC2 well on high settings at 1920x1080, so it's far from a useless gaming card. As a rough idea of the GTS 450 compared to the GTX 560, see charts in the link. Note that pretty much anything past a certain point handles SC2 fine, and it's really about the CPU in those scenarios. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_6850_SCS3_Passive/27.html Note that none of the internal components are particularly noisy, so noise shouldn't be that bad despite the very open-air, mesh-heavy case design. They're not exactly silent though either. Promo codes expire in a couple days, but you said you were buying soon. edit: wait a sec, I just realized that the motherboard doesn't have SATA3, and that's a SATA3 SSD that would be very sad edit2: changed SSD to an Intel 320 80GB. After all, you're putting two OS on it and need to partition the drive, so this has a little more capacity. Some of those video/image editing applications take a bit of space too. They changed the warranty from 3 years to 5 years on the 320 series. This should be the most reliable SSD on the market, based on Intel's past history and the fact that they're using the same controller as for the previous X25-M G2.

You can get a more expensive motherboard than that if you want though. Just get something with the features, PCI/PCIe slots, RAM slots, etc. that you need. e.g. this has USB3 and SATA3 support, for $75: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236

I've always been interested in building my own desktop and now that I have some time and money on my hands, I've decided to start one. The use will be mainly for school/gaming/stream. Did a little research and came down to this. AMD Phenom II X6 1100T - 189.99 Sapphire ATI HD6850 - 169.99 (-15.00 MIR) OCZ Vertex2 60gb - 104.99 (-20.00 MIR) G Skill Ripsaw 8gb (2x4gb) 1333 - 69.99 GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H ATX AMD mobo - 99.99 Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" - 44.99 ASUS 24X DVD Burner - 19.99 What I need help is with the power supply (brand + watt) and if anything I have is overkill/could be improved. As for budget I want it to be ~850 max. EDIT: Forgot the case, but was always interested in the Antec 300 illusion. Any thoughts?

Self explanatory: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083 and http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300.html A GTX 560 uses roughly 160w while a core i5 2400 uses roughly 55w so a quality 500w power supply such as the XFX Core Edition 450 provides more than enough power for such a configuration. If you wanted to overclock, you can get a core i5 2500k, an Xigmatek Gaia, and a Asrock P67 Pro3 instead. This would add about $80 to the total.

+ Show Spoiler + @Soloside: Phenom II X6 1100T kind of sucks compared to a i5-2400 (which costs the same), except when you can actually keep all six cores busy. In that situation, they're roughly the same, with a very slight edge to the Phenom II X6. See here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/363?vs=203 Antec 300 Illusion is okay but it's kind of dated and missing features of more modern cases. The extra two fans over the normal Antec 300 only help temperatures by a few degrees. At $55 it's a decent value though. You're better off with a variant of the last build skyR posted. + Show Spoiler [build] + Intel Core i5 2400 @ $180 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074 Gigabyte GTX 560 @ $190 ($170 after mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125383 AsRock H61M-VS @ $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157241 GSkill Ripjaws 2x4GB 1333MHz @ $55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311 XFX Core Edition 450 @ $55 ($45 after mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012 Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB @ $40 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769 DVD Burner @ $20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204 Extra SATA cable (you need 3, motherboard comes with 2) @ $4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812270093 Intel 320 Series 80GB @ $160 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167049 Antec 300 Illusion @ $55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066 fyi the power supply is way overkill, though it should be of good quality. I'm trying to put together a new computer. I'm not that experience with hardware so any assistance would be greatly appreciated ![]() I would like to buy from pccasegear.com as I'm from Australia. My budget is AU$1000. I was thinking of getting this BenQ GL2440HM 24in Widescreen LED Monitor with Speakers . Its $199, therefore leaving $800 for my build. I don't need an O/S. Reason for building a new computer is because I currently play SC2 on my laptop which I accidentally dropped a couple of weeks ago XD Doesn't work so good now :S I will use this computer to play SC2 and BF3 in the future. I don't need to play my games on the best graphics. I just want a reliable, affordable computer which will last me a couple years if possible. Many Thanks, George

This sample build can't overclock but won't have trouble playing computer games: Processor: i3 2100 PSU: Earthwatts 430W Motherboard: ASRock H61M-VS RAM: 4GB of memory GPU: Gigabyte GTX560 Ti Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB That currently comes to $603 but you still need a computer case. I'm going to leave case picking to you because I'm not you and I don't know what you think looks cool or suits your needs (what do you need? do you want quiet computing; do you want to fit 10 hard disks; do you want a small portable frame? I dunno I'm not you). So you have $200 to choose a computer case. I can tell you what's bad and what's good so pick a few and I can tell you which ones are seriously bad designs.

+ Show Spoiler + http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_535&products_id=15319 reason being is the additional pci-e connector necessary for your graphics card, and although you can convert your standard 4 pin into pci-e I usually dont recommend it on a multiple rail design.

Fair enough about the PSU, he isn't running much off the PSU so it wouldn't really matter if he's using an adapter but getting a PSU with two actual PCIe connectors is a far better idea.

So thinking of going with a variation Womwomwom's build. Processor: i5-2400 PSU: Silverstone Strider 500W ST50F-ES Motherboard: ASRock H61M-VS RAM: 4GB of memory GPU: Gigabyte GTX560 Ti Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB Monitor: BenQ GL2440HM 24" Case: Silverstone PS05 Optical Drive: Samsung SH-222AB After factoring the price for a case and optical drive had some spare money, so took xUraharaX's advice and put it toward a better CPU :D Including shipping and Insurance its just over $1000 which is great! Big thanks to Womwomwom, xUraharaX, Az0r_au, HuggyBear and JingleHell for the build, their advice and feedback! Really appreciate it, you guys are awesome! <3
