Even the 1000w psu is wayyyy overkill, go with maybe a 600w 750w.\

edit: that 7970 will not use as much as you think. Get a 750w then if you want and call it a day, you will not nearly get close to 750w but it's up to you.

No, you don't. The ibuypower website is lying.

Hey, I'm trying to help my gf pick out a new laptop to buy. Even though the format didn't fit perfectly, I tried to answer the questions as best as I could. Keep in mind, she lives in Canada so she would be buying from a Canadian retailer.

What is your budget?
$1000 ish

What is your resolution?
probably 1366x768 (trying to keep a budget), any screen size she says is ok, from 14-17 inches

What are you using it for?
Some gaming but mostly web surfing and entertainment like movies. She occasionally uses Photohop. She expressed a desire to stream things like movies or webcam but not necessarily during intensive games.

What is your upgrade cycle?
3 years

When do you plan on building it?
Within 3 months

Do you plan on overclocking?
No

Do you need an Operating System?
Yes

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
N/A (no)

Where are you buying your parts from?
Online in Canada

Atm, the most graphic intensive games/things she will use it for is LoL, Photoshop, L4D2, TF2. As long as she is able to play future games at decent settings, that will be enough. Thanks!

I am running a 680 on a AX750W.

Cheeck the official amd site, they say that the requirement is a 500w+ psu. So that means a 500w psu will work.

Pulling less than 400w from the wall, which doesn't count PSU efficiency into things, under a very heavy gaming load.

And THAT website doesn't want your money...

Understandable, but wrong. They're just trying to sell you over-watted crap supplies that can't actually deliver their advertised wattage. Here, from a review site:

A review of the 7970. Total measured system power consumption while gaming with a 7970, 391 watts.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5261/amd-radeon-hd-7970-review/27

Anyway, I've given you pretty much all the advice I can if you're set on buying from ibuypower. There's only so much not-bad one can manage.

Remember, your money either goes to ibuypower or not. NOT THE POSTER. Of course they will try to stretch the truth to you.
Hell, there was a time i was in frys electronics to buy a desktop case on sale and i had salesmen trying to sell me every type of part, i happened to throw out the word its for a budget diablo 3 build and they reccomended an AMD FX-6100, i laughed.
Go dive deep in this thread, you will find every recommended computer purchase list rarely go past 500w, Including the OP, And even outsourced TECH sites that wont benefit from your money.

Eh, if you like throwing away money. I guess so be it..

Hey guys, looking to build a computer for the first time. I've been doing a good amount of research, and I've put together an initial build based on one I found on Anandtech. Again, this is my first time building a computer, and I want to make sure I do it right. I would really appreciate any comments/opinions about my build, and especially any suggestions for better/cheaper parts.

Budget
My budget is $800, and the build I've currently put together sits at around $790.

What is your resolution?
1920x1080.

What are you using it for?
Gaming, possibly streaming in 720p if it fits the budget. My main goal is to be able to play Starcraft 2 and Team Fortress 2 at high if not max settings.

What is your upgrade cycle?
2-3 years.

When do you plan on building it?
Next week or two.

Do you plan on overclocking?
No.

Do you need an Operating System?
Yes.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Microcenter, Newegg, and Fry's.

So this is the build I've put together, and would really appreciate any help revising or appending it. Thanks!

My main concerns are whether or not the parts are actually all compatible with each other, but from what I've researched they should be... also wondering which graphics card to go for between the HD6850 and the GTX 460, and whether or not a 500 watt PSU would be enough to power it all. And I don't know if it matters, but I'm using an ASUS VH242 Monitor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236052). Again, any help is appreciated, and thanks for reading!

Hello

I am working on my first build and wanted to double check to make sure I was getting a good computer. My budget for this build is around $1300-1450 including tax and shipping. I will primarily be using this computer mostly for media, web development, and occasionally gaming (ie. starcraft med to high settings). I don't plan on OC my CPU right away
The components that I have chosen:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965....................$105
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth 990FX..................$132 (open box)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti..............$130
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws (2x 4GB 1600)...........$47
Case: Antec 900......................................$100
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 1TB...........$100
SDD: OCZ Agility 3..................................$55
DVD: Asus DVD Burner............................$17
PSU: FSP Group AURUM GOLD 500W.... $90
Monitor: Asus VH236H.............................$145 (2)

Total: $ 1250+tax

Please let me know what changes I should make before actually ordering the parts.

Thanks for the feedback!

I was going to recommend one of the new AMD trinity laptops (they also come in slim versions, like the HP Sleekbooks), with an SSD added in by yourself. But I don't know if they're available in Canada.

How are MSI laptops in terms of quality? Any complaints or issues? I was specifically looking at http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152349

It's pointlessly large. Your setup won't use more than 400w if you don't overclock it. Overclocking won't use more than 500w, off the top of my head.

i need at least 850 because of the video card

No, you don't. The ibuypower website is lying.

Uhh idk man.. no offense but i kinda trust that over one person lol

Oh okay well then perhaps you might trust TWO opinions?

I have not 1, but TWO 7970s. They are BOTH overclocked (so they use more power) to 1100, and on my i5-2500k system (also overclocekd to 4.2 Ghz) the sum of all my parts put together only gets to 684 watts. And that's with me using my entire system at 100%.

CPU @ 100% doing folding
both GPUs @ 100% doing bitcoin mining.

As long as your PSU can actually deliver the advertised wattage (I have a Seasonic X 750), there is no reason you should need that large of a PSU.
