Do these look okay, I already have the PSU I'm going to use, and a GTS 250.

Thanks :D

You need DDR3 RAM, not DDR2 RAM, with that mobo. Other than that it looks okay. What graphics card do you have? Or if you're not gaming, the integrated graphics on the 880G chipset mobo is fine. It would be pretty terrible for modern 3D games though.

Quick question. The family computer in my house is pretty terrible, a Radeon X300 and an old dual core pentium-D. It plays Team Fortress 2 at about 20 fps, and I haven't bothered with SC2. Basically, would a Radeon 4550 provide a boost in playability up to say 30-40 fps on lowest settings? Because they're on sale for 12 dollars on Newegg and I would be willing to shell out if it will make it playable for my friends when they come over.

Yeah, that sounds about right for a Radeon HD 4550 I think.

His last GPU, which he used for over a year without issues, was a GTX285, if thats any help.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cooler-Master-eXtreme-Power-Plus-600-W-Power-Supply-Review/1034/1

He's not going to be happy when he reads this, haha. In Pakistan there are only two mainstream PSU brands available, Cooler Master and Corsair, and the latter is fairly more expensive. However, if I'm not mistaken, the gtx285 is more power hungry than the 5870, so shouldnt the fact that his computer ran fine for over a year with no hanging/freezing/crashing etc indicate he'll probably be okay?

Otherwise I suppose he'll have to spring for a new PSU, in which case the 6870 might be a more attractive buy.

As bad as the PSU is, he's not using over 400W (probably not close to that unless overclocking) so it's probably okay. Some Cooler Master PSU models are quite decent though, like the Silent Pro and Silent Pro Gold.

Yeah, that Phenom II X4 955 and Gigabyte 870 AM3 mobo looks fine. Cheapish RAM from a decent brand like this is fine unless you're heavily overclocking.

An issue is that a full-size ATX mobo doesn't fit in the original case you had. [edit: oops nevermind] A decent ATX case for $40 is the NZXT Gamma (or Beta). If you're willing to spend a little more, the Cooler Master HAF 912 is a nicer case with better cooling. Also if you might want more HDD space, this combo looks fine.

Thanks, definitely going to go with the cheaper RAM. I'll probably get the NZXT Gamma case, unless you think it's worth it to invest in a better system, I don't really see myself overclocking or upgrading anytime soon.

Will the motherboard I picked not fit in the original case?

Thanks again, as always.

Oh crap sorry, I misread the description. "Cooler Master Elite 310 ATX, MATX Mid Tower Case" is indeed a normal ATX mobo-fitting case, so it'd be okay. The comma threw me off, so I thought it was a case that only fit mATX mobos. Anyway, I think the low-end NZXT products are better-regarded (better airflow, features, etc.) than the low-end CM stuff, but it's your call anyway.

With just those parts you'll be fine. If you were thinking about overclocking or maybe upgrades in the future, you might think about a better case or an extra 120mm fan or two, but it's not really an issue for what you're getting.

You need to add a case, and its about $50 more expensive than your original build, but you get
1) a GTX 460 which is significantly faster than a 5770
2) much higher quality motherboard and psu
3) faster HDD

Do note that you needed to add a CPU cooler to your original build, the processor you included does not come with one. Also, the Athlon X2 and X3 perform similarly in SC2.

For about the same price, he could go with a non-OEM Athlon iix3 and drop the aftermarket cooler.
That wasn't any act of God. That was an act of pure human fuckery.

@Xandos

I'd suggest either the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB or Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB for a boot drive. You could also go the SSD route.

The core i7 950 uses socket 1366. You selected a P55 motherboard which is socket 1156. You'd either have to pick a 1156 processor such as the core i5 750 / 760 (or the core i7 860 if you want hyperthreading) or pick a X58 motherboard for your core i7 950.

If you do go the 1366 route, you'd want a triple channel ram kit (3x1) to take advantage of the chipset.

You don't need a 1000W PSU unless you plan on doing triple SLI sometime in the future. A Corsair, Seasonic, or Antec PSU in the 500-700w range is fine for the build.

Xandos: unless you're using multiple GPUs, overclocking a GTX 480 (uses a lot more power than a GTX 460), or something like that, you don't need over 500W. That Earthwatts 750W model is good, but this Seasonic S12II 520W Bronze is a higher-performing unit with a 5 year warranty, for only $60. In terms of efficiency it's better to use a PSU rated more closely to your actual max, typical, and idle power consumption figures. See this and this.

It's still private. Public wish lists and private wish lists do not share the same URL.

Is this yours?: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16078046

Generally you'd don't want all your ram slots to be filled so you'd want 3x2 for 6GB of ram. Less sticks puts less stress on your memory controller and will put less stress on you if a ram stick ends up being faulty.

@rahleep:

You can't put combos in wish lists, I know, but with some tweaking you could get the price down. (With those part selections, I'm assuming you're aiming for a low budget.)

For most applications including most games, 3 cores wouldn't be any worse, so you could go with an Athlon II X3. They're a little cheaper and tend to have slightly higher clock speeds. A GTS 450 would be a very very slight downgrade, and this is going for $35 less. GTS 450 IIRC is between HD 5770 and HD 5750, which are already fairly close.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend a $30 case (1 80mm fan) for a build with a legit video card, especially since the case isn't reviewed so great. In the very least something like NZXT Gamma would be a big upgrade for $10 more. Seasonic S12II 520W Bronze is nice, but you wouldn't use close to 300W at full load (pretty conservative estimate) anyway so it seems a waste. As far as reliable budget lower-wattage units go, Antec Earthwatts 380D is efficient and overall solid. This would also be okay and quieter.

One comment about the monitor: 21.5" is kind of small for 1920x1080 resolution IMHO, but of course that's a personal preference issue.

At the moment, if you're shopping from newegg, keep these promo codes in mind:
10% off any HDD with code EMCZZYR25

10% off any Desktop Video Card with code EMCZZYR24

10% off any Blu-ray drive with code EMCZZYR23

Great, did some research and made some changes.

Do I need anything else as far as cables/hardware (kinda want bluetooth for the phone...) ? If not I'm ready to go (nerdgasms).
