When using this resource, please read FragKrag's opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
What's your budget?
I have 1k to put into the computer initially and want to spend approx 2k in the next couple months.
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
SC, WoW, Gaming
What is your upgrade cycle?
I plan on starting with 2 4 gig sticks of ram and the crossfire IV motherboard and working from there. I don't need crossfire video cards but I want to start with a good one and eventually get a second.
When do you plan on building it?
Nov 8th will be when I buy the first parts
Do you plan on overclocking?
not unless it is recommended. If it is, i use fry's and might get a 2 year warranty for 50.
Do you plan on adding a second GPU for Crossfire?
Yes, I want to eventually have a crossfire setup. It is important but practically the last on my list.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I will be using Fry's mainly and newegg if I miss anything from frys.
I will need to pick up a oem copy of win 7 and a $100 case that will be included in the initial 1k. I live in oregon so I can skip out on taxes

You are right, I was wanting crossfire because I was "planning ahead" when I really don't need it. Maybe when I have an extra 200$ to plop down I will get it. What do you think about the noctua compared to a water cooled system. The feedback on the noctua is amazing but I was just wondering. It's awesome that you picked the case I wanted to get last night at frys (they were out). Ty for the build I will be following it closely.
|
Well because you're probably won't crossfire you can get a cheaper motherboard and save some money there, and could probably add an SSD.
The Noctua is really good, and water-cooling is nice but that requires a lot of money to get a good setup.

Noctua D14 is literally so massive you can probably run the thing passive if your CPU is at/near stock settings.
So long your case has well directed airflow (note: well directed airflow is not the same as lots of airflow), the D14 can pretty much tame most standard overclocks fairly easily. Its more than adequate, I can't really think of a reason to go for watercooling unless you're trying to achieve something crazy.
Just watch out if you have tall RAM (like those gskill ripjaws) or side fans (some cases, no idea if the HAF 922 has problems with tall coolers), because you might have fitting problems.

Hi all, Can I get an opinion on this build? I'm trying to help my brother build a comp. Only gaming on it, nothing else. I tried to use the OP to guide my choices, but I want to make sure I didn't go too cheap on the PSU and Mobo. Also, I just want to make sure everything I picked out will work correctly together and I didn't forget anything lol.
What's your budget?
I'd like to keep it under $800
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
Only Gaming, mostly SC2
What is your upgrade cycle?
3 years, I think
When do you plan on building it?
Around Christmas time, so soon
Do you plan on overclocking?
no, maybe later possibly, but not a priority
Do you plan on adding a second GPU for Crossfire?
Probably not
Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg
Here's the build:

replace with a gtx 460 768mb if you want to save a bit more

Just so people konw, as most people are buying from Newegg, EMCZZYR24 = 10% off any desktop gpu from Newegg until 11/12. Not bad :o.
Also 10% off any hard drive, expires tomorrow. EMCZZYR25

This is fine. For gaming though, a core i5 is more than necessary usually so going AMD with a Phenom II X4 and AM3 mobo will save some money. Definitely don't get a high-end CPU with a HD 4670 if you're looking for gaming performance. There may be a couple better deals here and there than the above list though, especially for the PSU. The Seasonic S12II 520W is overall better than the 550VX (which is already good), and it's $20 cheaper. Note that 520W is already way overkill, but the power output quality (noise, regulation, etc.) and warranty are probably worth the money.

Yup, I wanted to build a new PC and since I have absolutely no clue about this kind of stuff, I'd appreciate some help. First things first, I'm from Germany and would be willing to spend up to 800 Euros on all the stuff (that's around 1130 Dollars), preferably less but let's just say I have 1000 Dollars for all of the Hardware (rest is needed for the OS and probably some small stuff). Should easily support a resolution of 1920x1080 (single screen right now, probably a second one later) Needs to be capable of running SC2 and other NextGen games on all maximum settings while simultaneously running FRAPS without lag! Would also be used for a lot of video editing and rendering, probably some streaming as well. So I suppose I'd need a pretty good CPU~ I'm also not planning on upgrading regularly, so it should still support all the good stuff (Games mostly) for a few years. Planning to build it relatively soon (within the next few months, early 2011 I suppose). Not planning on overclocking much, except it would turn out to really be a ton cheaper. No clue on the second GPU part. Don't think I need it since I'm going more for processing power than crazy graphics, but I really don't know anything about that kind of stuff. So I'll just say no unless all of you think it'd be needed for my uses. Oh, and I'd also need an internal video card - any suggestions for one with a good price/performance ratio? The video card would not be a priority though, so it doesn't need to fit in the budget. Since that would be a build right from scratch, I also need an adequate cooler and a decent case (just some case that fits everything and has plenty of room for all the cables and stuff, my current one is pretty small...)
I really don't know at all what specs I'd need for that kind of stuff (probably way lower than I'm expecting - but my current computer can't even run SC2 on lowest settings along with FRAPS without massive lag and frame drops so I'm a real hypocrite =P). Would be really grateful if you guys could figure out a decent build ^^

What site would you be using to purchase parts?
(Such a big wall of text, just copy and paste the questions next time.)
If you're building sometime next year prices will be a lot different and giving you a build right now that's around 1k will not be worth that much by the time it comes to purchase them.

yes i know laptops are not that good for gaming, but I'm in University and I NEED a laptop.
I'm looking at these 2...
AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N930 (2.0 speed) , 8g of ram, and a radeon 5650 1g graphics card
or
i5 intel processor (2.53 speed), 6g of ram, and a radeon 5650 1g graphics card
I heard that AMD processors work well with ATI graphics, but is it really worth less speed?
Which will be better for Starcraft 2 , thanks :D
|
If they're the same price, get the i5.
It is a myth that AMD works better with AMD and Nvidia works better with Intel. Anybody who says otherwise is bullshitting you.
|
@skyR
thanks a lot, the one with the i5 is actually cheaper

If you're building sometime next year prices will be a lot different and giving you a build right now that's around 1k will not be worth that much by the time it comes to purchase them. I actually don't know where I'd get all that stuff at the best price; I'm from Germany and really I have no clue where I should buy everything... If you know good places to buy in Europe it'd be cool if you could just tell me - otherwise you can just list a few decent parts with price estimates and I'll search for good deals on them myself. And for the budget, you may just take the current prices - if it's cheap enough I'll probably get it very soon anyways and if it's rather expensive I'll just wait a few more months. As long as it gets the jobs done that I want it to, pretty much any build will suffice =)
Here's my request again, now in question-answer format for easier overview: + Show Spoiler +What is your budget? Would spend up to ~1k dollars on hardware, including cooler and everything
What is your resolution? 1920x1080; currently only one monitor but might upgade to two in the future
What are you using it for? Gaming, video editing and rendering; maybe some streaming. Must be able to run NextGen games on all maximum settings while running FRAPS at the same time without lag.
What is your upgrade cycle? Not planning on upgrading regularly, so it should be able to support mostly anything for a few more years.
When do you plan on building it? Probably early 2011, but you may just calculate the budget with current prices and overshoot it a little if needed (Really no clue how expensive this really "needs" to be)
Do you plan on overclocking? Not planned right now
Do you need an Operating System? Don't need to calculate this into the budget =)
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not planned
Where are you buying your parts from? Already adressed in this post
