No, no Arctic Silver.

Where are you getting them? I can help look.

Some good ones are Tuniq TX-2/3, Arctic Cooling MX-2/3/4, OCZ Freeze Extreme, IC Diamond 7, Shin-Etsu, Noctua

Radioshack has the Arctic Silver products, so it would save the shipping time. As long as 51-53 C temperatures in SC2 won't damage the CPU for the next week, I'm willing to get something else off newegg if it's better.

thermal paste doesn't really matter all that much, at most you are shaving off 4-5C at load (for which you end up paying around $10+ for). if you aren't planning on overclocking i would just go with the cheapest you can find.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

I haven't played much of any game lately with school and whatnot, but it's pretty obvious my computer isn't very good (read:awful). I'm just looking to manage SC2 around low-medium settings and I'm sure that would put me in pretty good shape in preparation for the new WoW expansion. I've always played WoW on the higher spectrum of both PvE and PvP, so I'm looking to handle raids with decent FPS and an option to Fraps in at least half-screen.

With my limited experience and knowledge of how everything works, I've been looking at these:

Is there anything else besides a power supply I should be considering? Or do those suggestions just make me look like an idiot?

Any help, recommendations, and explanations are appreciated.

Your processor is pretty decent, it's your graphics card that's killing you.

Is it one of these models? The processors don't match up though.

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/sm/WF25a/12132708-12132884-12132884-12132884-12736054-12736162.html

I'd say keep the CPU, change motherboard, case, graphics card, power supply.
Add CPU Cooler for overclocking and maybe new hard drive?
You're using DDR2 RAM right now, right? and not DDR3?

You're not going to fit everything in that case, so you'll probably need a new case.
Also, with newer parts you'll probably need a new PSU that will supply power to the right rails.
You'll need to change the motherboard because I don't think that has a x16 lane.

You won't get very far with $300, or at least end up at a dead end path.

Graphics Card: ASUS GTS 250 512mb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121381

Motherboard: Open Box: GIGABYTE GA-P43-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128447R

Case: Antec 300
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 380-D
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.514532

Subtotal is $243.92

A cooler for a pretty good overclock will be the Hyper 212 for $30. And a 500gb HD is about $50 and a 1TB is about $70.

I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading like that on a $300 budget, reusing the CPU.

Since the graphics is most of the problem, you might as well just upgrade the GPU and forget about the rest. A low-profile card like this HD 5670 should probably fit in the case and will probably run on the stock power supply. edit: yeah nevermind, no PCI-E x16 slot...

That wouldn't be a horrible option if his motherboard had a pcie x16 slot, but I doubt that it does. If it is any of the models that R04R suspects, then it definitely does not.
That wasn't any act of God. That was an act of pure human fuckery.

It is one of those dc5700 models. Unless I'm reading this wrong it's just DDR (http://i53.tinypic.com/14ik3k9.jpg), would DDR2 make a difference without upgrading to a 64-bit OS?

If I don't overclock will I still need an additional cooling source or would the default fans be enough? Would performance be comfortably smooth without overclocking? If anything I don't want to risk messing up and having something fry out.

Hi all,

I’ve been reading here for a while but this is my first actual post, and I was hoping someone could help me design a pc, and the sticky thread and the thread itself said this was the place to ask so yeah, here I am. Also that being said, it might be an odd place to do so but to anyone who reads this, I wanted to say thanks for the site and the effort put in to it.

With that out of the way, here’s what I’m looking for.

What is your budget?

I'm looking to upgrade in two parts if possible, and I realise it's a little restrictive doing so but my current pc is driving me insane.

I'd be looking about about £300 for a motherboard, cpu and 4gig of ram, although I'd be able to push that closer to £400 if it makes a significant impact. I'd need this part to contain reasonable integrated graphics able to run WoW and SC2 without too much trouble, even if not on high graphics.

In the begining of the new year I'd then like to spend a further £200-£300 adding a seperate graphics card and more RAM.

What is your resolution?

At the moment I play on whatever my pc will run any set item at, but if I had to pick I’d be happy at 1280x1024.

What are you using it for?

In short I want to be able to use my pc for:

  • Running WoW on ultra graphics.

  • Running SC2 on high graphics (Or ultra in single player if possible in budget).

  • Listening to music and visit internet sites whilst running games.

  • Video editing/map editing.

The long version:

The main reasons I want to upgrade are for Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. In general I’d like to be able to run either of those games whilst able to quickly alt tab between a media player and an internet browser without particularly suffering for doing so. I also would like to really get in to using the SC2 map editor which currently just annihilates my pc, as well as video editing from time to time.

What is your upgrade cycle?

Last time I upgraded was around 2003 with 2nd hand parts, so really just when it gets to the point like now where I’m hitting a wall with software requirements. I guess I’d be looking for 5+ years before upgrading again, with the exception of possibly adding more RAM in a few months time.

When do you plan on building it?

I'm planning on setting up the basic motherboard, CPU and some RAM as soon as possible. I'll then be adding a seperate graphics card and further RAM in the new year.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Whilst I understand what overclocking is I don’t know how to safely do it without damaging my system and thus have no intention of doing so. If it would be deemed important though to make a system work out in budget I’d be happy to put more time in to learning how to do so.

Do you need an Operating System?

No, I’m getting a copy of Windows 7 separate to this build.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

No, I don’t plan to do so.

Where are you buying your parts from?

I live in Europe (England) and so far Ebuyer.com has proven to be the cheapest option on most parts I’ve looked up so I will likely end up using them.

(That's it for relevant info)

I also wanted to show my current specs, just because having looked up the minimum specs I’m amazed it can run Sc2 and I thought I'd share just how low you can go and still play. Managed to get through single player on normal and 1/3 of the way through brutal before I gave up and decided I need a new system!

  • Motherboard: Uncertain (year 2000 ish motherboard).

  • CPU: 1.6 ghz single core.

  • Ram: 1.5gig DDR1.

  • Graphics: nVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra

Yeah sometimes I have to press escape to close video clips on single player because the fading out takes forever, yes everything is on low and every time I click a new unit or a new one hatches or I build a new building or more than 40 units are on the screen, or I’m looking blankly in to a fog of war area in frustration, or trying to load a game or a new sound file begins playing - it lags, but….yeah ok I need a new pc.

Thanks in advance for any help at all.

Edit: Typo correction.

This build is to play sc2 at ultra. Trying to spend about 500-600 CAD before taxes and i'm mostly going to be using www.ncix.ca and price match with other Canadian sites. Don't need an OS and a monitor. I might overclock without changing the voltage and hopefully unlock a core. The only other upgrade that I will make with this build later on is the addition of an SSD.

CPU: Athlon II X3 445 $80
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon 5770 $145 w/ 10MIR
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-870A SATA 3 USB 3.0 $105
RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333 CL9 $68
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 500GB $ 37
PSU: OCZ ModXStream PO 500W $70 w/ 20 MIR
Case: Antec 300 $54
Optical Drive: Samsung 22X DVD Writer SATA $17

Total: 576 w/ 30 MIR

How many watts do i need for the PSU if i'm able to unlock a core and add in a SSD later on? Can I use something cheaper like Corsair 430CX ($50 w/ 20 MIR) or Coolermaster Elite Power 400W ($35)?

I was trying to sort through the 98 pages for mention of the 460 gtx compared to the new 6xxx series released this month... yet I'll admit after 20 or so pages my eyes began bleeding so I was going to come straight out and ask.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131375 == Newegg's 6850 (194 Cad)

vs

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261075 == Newegg 460 Gtx (Fermi)

Current specs:

Cpu: Q6600 2.4 (soon to be OC'd to 3.0 on Air)
Gpu: TBD here
Mobo: Asus P5Q Pro
Ram: 4Gb Ocz sli / 4 Gb corsair 1066
Psu: OCZ 850W

I have been reading/ looking up benchmarks up a lot on the two cards (Tomshardware etc) and they seem to more or less come out even (within 3%). I was wondering if the community had any views to help me break the tie. I'm leaning towards the 6850 since my mobo is currently Crossfire Compatible and I'm sure the new 6 series will crossfire well.

PS I have considered the fact the new 6850 will probably retain better Driver support longer than the 460 (with Nvidia's new line coming soon) but I don't know how large an impact that will really have in term of Real-world playability.

@Iyerbeth:
Welcome to (posting on) TL.net! This is the right place to post that btw.

If your system is that old, you'll need a new power supply too. You'd need a new power supply to be able to handle the extra power needed by a good graphics card anyway, so that's not a huge deal.

No integrated graphics on the market can handle SC2 well on more than lowest graphics settings, if that. What you could do is get a £40-50 graphics card in the meantime that will run on medium well at low resolutions like that. But if you're used to really low fps and playing on lowest settings, integrated Radeon HD4250 or whatever should be okay I guess.

For £300 you can get a Phenom II X4 955, AM3 mobo, 2x2 GB DDR3 RAM, and a power supply. You would want a power supply that would be able to handle a high-power graphics card later on. If you want USB3 support for the mobo and higher reliability, and a better PSU, that would bring up the cost a little bit, but it'd still be under £400.

@JackRipper:
Screen resolution...? HD 5770 is mostly good on ultra, but not if you're expecting rock-solid fps at 1920x1200 or higher. For a core unlock and light overclock on an Athlon II X3, you're still not going to be reaching 150W, and the HD 5770 doesn't take much more than 100W either. SSD power consumption is in the single digit Watts. So 500W would be overkill. That said, that OCZ PSU is not so great. You could save money and get a Corsair 430CX, which is a decent budget unit that will still have enough power.

I'm going to be playing sc2 at 1920X1200 but can go down lower if I need to. Should I change the mobo to one that doesn't include a core unlocker and SATA 3? (since they probably only had unlockable cores at the time the CPU was released to meet their quotas and SATA3 is not needed for most SSDs) Is there a better PSU for this build than the Corsair 430CX (maybe Seasonic SS-400ET 400W 80 PLUS for ~44 in a combo)?

CPU: Athlon II X3 445 $80
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon 5770 $145 w/ $10 MIR
Mobo: ASUS M4A77TD ATX AM3 $80 w/ $15 MIR
RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333 CL9 $68
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 500GB $ 37
PSU: Corsair 430CX $50 w/ 20 MIR
Case: Antec 300 $54
Optical Drive: Samsung 22X DVD Writer SATA $17

Total: 531 w/ $45 MIR

Edit: Would adding $76 more for a phenom ii x4 955 ($156) and $45 more for a Radeon 6850 $190 be worth it? Would I need to get a better power supply then (maybe a Seasonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze ($63 in a combo)?

If you're spending 10 bucks on it you better be getting a large amount, last time i spend 10 bucks on my thermal paste i did my northbridge, cpu, gpu on all my computers, including copper modding my laptop to do it to my laptop too. So i say well worth it. Usually if you're buying it online unless it's free shipping i wouldn't but it solo because then the shipping is the cost of the TIM.

Hi, thank you for your welcome and for taking the time to help. I've looked up your suggestions, and it looks like a very good place for me to start, the CPU especially seems very well priced for what it is.

Also I hadn't considered just buying a cheap graphics card to tide me over, but it seems like adding one in doesn't really push me further than I was wanting to go and could potentially buy me some more time to really get the best graphics card in the new year. Even with looking for a PSU that'll handle the requirements nicely once everything is together it's come out really nicely priced, so I think I'll end up following that advice, so really, thank you for your reply.

For Starcraft II, I think that the Nvidia cards still retain a performance advantage, other benchmarks aside.

With a Crossfire board, I think you may be better off with a 6850, since you can grab a second and gain a substantial performance upgrade roughly a year or so down the line for $100.

The power usage of the 6850 is a little better, but nothing to write home about.

Alright, sorry to ask again about a computer build, but my favorite LPers' computer is dying and I was hoping to get some advice for a build in Canada. His problem right now is inconsistent booting, random bluescreens, etc.

What is your budget?
I'm guessing lowish, say about $500 CAD

What is your resolution?
Something that could handle 1920x1200 would be ideal, though I have no idea what sort of monitor he has

What are you using it for?
Video recording/editing, illustrations/drawing. Gaming isn't a concern, ZSNES isn't the most taxing of programs. He mainly plays Mario romhacks, and occasionally indie games.

What is your upgrade cycle?
Long (probably 4-5 years)

When do you plan on building it?
Within a month I reckon

Do you plan on overclocking?
No.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No.

Where are you buying your parts from?
Canada is all I know.

Motherboard: Open Box: GIGABYTE GA-P43-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard

Case: Antec 300
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 380-D

Subtotal is $243.92

A cooler for a pretty good overclock will be the Hyper 212 for $30. And a 500gb HD is about $50 and a 1TB is about $70.

I know very little about this particular brand Palit (actually nothing! :o ), but I think if he's on an insanely limited budget the Palit GTS 1GB is selling for $99 at Fry's with a $40 rebate making it only cost $59 net. Sounds pretty cheap for a GTS 250, isn't it?

Alright, sorry to ask again about a computer build, but my favorite LPers' computer is dying and I was hoping to get some advice for a build in Canada. His problem right now is inconsistent booting, random bluescreens, etc.

What is your budget?
I'm guessing lowish, say about $500 CAD+ Show Spoiler [the rest] +

For those applications, I think integrated graphics is fine. Depending on how heavy the video recording/editing is, lots of RAM may or may not be needed.

I think you're looking for something like this:
Athlon II X4 -- difference between it and Phenom II X4 shouldn't be too great though it's an option; see here
AM3 mobo, maybe 880G chipset -- get one with 4 slots of RAM so RAM can be upped later if necessary
2x2 GB DDR3 RAM -- no rated speed higher than 1333 needed as no overclocking
HDD, optical drive, case, PSU, as needed

With 880G or any AMD chipset ending with G, you get integrated graphics on the mobo. I'm not that familiar with low-wattage PSUs, but I don't think there's anything out there that's really cheap yet reliable. Also, you might as well get something that could handle a GPU upgrade if that becomes necessary too. Corsair 430CX is okay and goes for a decent price usually.

Going NCIX.com and doing price matching seems to be the popular choice for Canadians.

NCIX is pretty useful, thanks. I'm trying to convince him that he can do a lot better than this pre-built specifically. I was noticing the 220W power supply, though since it lacks details on the motherboard and other parts specific complaints may be difficult. At the very least he can get a better power supply, and I can get him a free and legal copy of Office and Windows 7, for less than that price. Particulars to dissuade him from that choice would be useful though.

Edit: Would all this fit together properly? The case is pretty cheap. I just pulled this list from NCIX when fiddling around with some options.

220W is plenty enough for a computer like that, but not if he may be adding a discrete GPU in the future and/or other expansion cards. Seasonic's low-end OEM units are okay, but you can get a nicer case and PSU with this for not much more money.
