All this talk of Canada...

For Canadians wanting to overclock and in need of CPU cooling, the Venomous X-RT is only $35 @ Memory Express: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX28859

The price is stupid low considering it will outperform pretty much anything under about $60 and is pretty quiet to boot.

Hello everyone, my name is Jake.

After running the standard dell xps420 for about 4-5 Years, and since getting heavily into competitive PC gaming, I've decided it's time for an upgrade.
Therefore, I will be building my new computer from pretty much scratch, I will keep a few of the old parts that I feel aren't important enough to splash out on, or that can perhaps still serve a purpose, but for the most part, everything's going and in comes the new!

Without Further Ado, Here are the parts I'm thinking of. I'm pretty sure they are all compatible.

Motherboard - Intel Burrage LGA1155 Motherboard - £140

Case - Coolermaster Mid Scout Storm - £67

CPU - Intel Sandybridge i5 2500k Quad Core 3.3Ghz socket 1155 - £163

RAM - Gskills Ripjaws 2x4GB DDR3 - £40

PSU - Corsair 700w 700GUK - £69

HDD/SSD - Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD - £155

GPU - Sapphire HD6850 GDDR5 - £100

HSF - Corsair CAFA50 - £22

Total Cost > £756

I'll also be running Windows 7 Operating System on this Beauty, let me know what you guys think, and if there are compatibility issues you can see, let me know before I go and waste time and effort with returning non-compatible products

I'm not sure where you get pricing from because the pricing you list is not what I see on Amazon...

Intel 520 is faster and better than Kingston HyperX for less: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Series-120GB-Resell-Solid/dp/B006YQ9RQC/

Corsair TX650V2 is better and available for less: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMPSU-650TXV2UK-Enthusiast-Series-Performance/dp/B004O0P9TO but doing CrossfireX with Radeon HD6850 is not something I'd recommend...

Did you pick the Storm Scout for aesthetics or the handles? If you're just picking a random case, the Storm Enforcer is available for less: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coolermaster-Storm-Enforcer-Tower-Case/dp/B004S9S218/

Corsair A50 is not £100... you might as well buy a top-end heatsink such as a Noctua NH-D14, Thermalright Silver Arrow, or Phanteks PH-TC14PE for around £70 if that's what you intended on paying...

Why would you buy an Intel P67 board? The P8Z68-V is available for less and arguably just as good if not better: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B005UDITT6 I'm not sure why you're getting such an expensive board if you're only getting a 6850?

Most of your configuration just seems like "I picked this because I like it" ...

I'm not great with what computer hardware is over excessive, fixed the prices now aswell.
Basically, I want a setup, with 8gb of ddr3 ram, with atleast an intel i5 processor and a good enough graphics card to run games, not on amazing super gosu settings, but be able to run medium settings smooth as can be. Thanks for the alternatives, I'll take a look and adjust

I would consider dropping down to an i5 2500 (not "K"), H67 chipset motherboard, ditch the cooler, and upgrade the graphics card with all the savings to something like a HD 7850 at least. There's no need to overclock the CPU to play any game smoothly. It's a nice option to have, but since you didn't mention a budget, I'm going to assume these adjustments need to be made - and going from a 6850 to a 7850 is a huge boost for most games, whereas OC'ing a 2500K is only noticeable in a few games.

I think GosuSwarm doesnt need 400W let alone 650W since I am about 90 percent sure he listed 1 single 6850. And, like a lot of people, thinks he needs "hella wattage" to run anything gaming.

Just as a side note to buying PSUs with massive amounts of wattage, I'm running a 6870 mining (100% gpu usage), a 680 under furmark, and my 2600k overclocked to 4.5ghz, with 9 total fans and an h60 pump, 1 hdd and 1 ssd with a 520c. Thats with 40a on the 12v rail.

Quick question, how much more difficult is installing a Water Cooling HSF over a normal one (e.g. Gaia)? Are there any special steps I need to know?

A self-contained closed-loop water cooling product like what Corsair and Antec sell (from Asetek, CoolIT), should be fairly simple to install, easier than many large air coolers. As usual, it will depend on the model. The downside is worse price/performance and noise/performance than the air coolers, small possibility of a leak, and not being able to run completely passive in an emergency if something doesn't work. The only real benefits have to do with the size, distribution of weight, and mounting.

If you're talking about a custom loop, that's much more involved.

I am just helping a friend set up a computer, and I have no prior experience in installing a water-based HSF. Is it the same screw it on top of the CPU with thermal paste?

So, I'm looking to build a new computer, and am looking for a few pointers. My current build was my first foray into building computers, so it's not the most optimized build. That said, I'd like to reuse as much of it as I can, and dump the rest off into a second computer for as cheap as possible. I'm not building it until I come home from uni in about a month, so I've got time if there's a good reason to wait.

I'm aiming to spend about $600 in total. I play SC2, will likely pick up D3, and WoW off and on. Also I'd like to stream SC2 if possible. I have a bunch of old hard drives and CD/DVD drives I can use, and I don't need an OS.

Here's the current build:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 9400
GPU: Asus ENGTS 260 DK
Mobo: Some random microATX mobo
RAM: 4GB
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 650W
Case: Antec 900

Here's what I'm planning so far for the new build:

CPU: Core i5-2400
GPU: eVGA GTX 460 1GB
Mobo: Asus P8H67-M LX Rev

Not entirely sure where to proceed from here.
1) Can I reuse the power supply? If so, what should I replace it with in the old build, and if not what should I get for the new one?
2) 4GB of ram should be good right?
3) I'm thinking about overclocking my GTX 460, as I've heard it's fairly easy and really improves the performance for this card. Will I need to buy any additional fans? I don't intend to push the limits of the card, but improving performance for free/cheap is nice. Also just general overclocking tips would be nice.
4) What kind of case should I get to replace my 900 on the old build? I'd ideally like it to be as small as possible, to bring to LANs and such, but I really have no idea what to get in that department.

Yes, it's the same. There's just the addition of a radiator which you have to screw in to the top or back of the case.

In a month, Ivybridge will be released so you will probably want to get a core i5 3450, 3470, or 3550 instead along with a H77. Not a big deal if you don't want to wait though.

You can re-use your power supply since it's a good model and you've overkilled quite a bit.

If you're using 4gb now and you don't see a problem than it's fine. But you are getting an mATX board so there's only two DIMM slots, might as well get 2x4gb since it's so cheap.

You don't need additional fans.

A Silverstone TJ08E would be one option for a small case.

What is your resolution?
1680x1050

What are you using it for?
Gaming and streaming, want to stream starcraft 2 in 720p without lag.

What is your upgrade cycle?
2-3 years

When do you plan on building it?
ASAP

Do you plan on overclocking?
No

Do you need an Operating System?
No

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No

Where are you buying your parts from?
Probably http://pccasegear.com.au the side listed in the OP unless there are any better options for buying parts online in Australia

This is my first time building a computer, thanks TL!

Edit: Don't need to buy keyboard, mouse, monitor etc.

Hey!
What do you think about this config? It's mainly for games specially for MMO (Guild Wars 2). I don't want to touch this comp for about 3-5 years in the aspect of upgrades after that I might make it SLI. I've chosen LGA-2O11 because it'll be easier to find a good upgrade for that socket after 3-5 years. It'll run on 192O*1O8O with another monitor that is 168O*1O5O (for multitasking). I've chosen the 85OW PS for the upcoming SLI. I pretty sure it's an overkill yet. Any ideas are welcome!

Sorry for the language! (It's hungarian by the way if you fell in love with it :D )

spend twice less, and spend the rest in about 3 years to build a new computer

a computer that would still be decent in 5 years... you got your hopes high

Skyr will probably help you get an optimized build, but you need to answer all questions in the op
"What if it's a triple DK ?" "Then we cry" "Prepare your handkerchief then ..."

Couldn't find a post about my question..

So, I have a GTX 590 and a Corsair Enthusiast Series 750-Watt Power Supply.

I was thinking about getting another 590 and putting them on SLI, would I be able to do that without replacing the power supply?
Storm is coming that cannot be avoided.

No. Quad-SLI is kinda demanding. The real question, though, is this: If you don't know the answer or how to find it, why are you looking at doing this?

So I read that the h61 mobo will be compatible with ivy bridge through a bios update. The only question I have is how do I get this update? Will I have to use another processor to start my rig up and load the new bios to make it compatible or will they come pre-loaded?
