We understand that this topic evokes strong feelings. In the interest of maintaining a necessary and productive discussion, we will be taking a strong stance against posters that clearly do not contribute to this aim. Dishonest and bad faith arguments, victim blaming, and attacks on other users, will be strictly moderated. A post which only serves to muddy the waters and dishonestly portray the nature of assault and harassment (and corresponding accusations) is also unwelcome. |
Lately a lot of people have been coming out against sexual abuse and harassment by people in esports and on twitch. A few members of the StarCraft community have come out with allegations or stories about things that happened in team houses, on twitter, at tournaments, etc. Kaitlyn talking about jp TLO and Pengwin talking about harassment in Korean teamhouses and Bubblelizzy talking about some pretty serious harassment And several women who have come out with stories about RAPiDcasting A player called Deity Ykie, Beastyqt's gf who dealt with him at league of legends tournaments in the past https://twitter.com/ykielol/status/1275258604715757570?s=21 theresagaffney head coach of messiah esports a girl who says she had similar experiences in 2012 when he was a league caster edit: this woman has since went private to avoid harassment and negative attention There's also the well known case of Avilo stalking a few girls
What are your thoughts on the situation? Makes me especially worried about the kinds of things that might have happened in Korean teamhouses that we don't know about. I used to feel bad for Rapid, because I tough even thought he was kind of a bad caster he put in the worked and deserved more respect. Well screw that shit, fuck him.
Hopefully those who have similar story will come forward. I hope I'm not wrong and the Starcraft community really is a bit more wholesome than most of the Esport landscape.

Wow reading about these makes me very uncomfortable - my heart is out to anyone who had to go through situations like those. Sexual harassment is disgusting and I'm glad people are coming forward to talk about it because it's certainly prevalent in a hyper-masculine niche like esports.

I think there was an opportunity to do something about it back when Destiny was still an SC2 streamer and had that stream where he was really drunk with the pornstar groping all over her and there was a mini-controversy about it that went nowhere of course. Or Avilo's repeated insanities that hurt him but didn't lead to anything larger about behavior in general. Now there's another opportunity and hopefully this time some real standards will be set and enforced in the SC2 scene and esports industry as a whole.

Is there a reason all that stuff is coming out now? It's a genuine question, I don't follow Twitter nor Twitch related stuff.

I think it started with some Destiny (the game not the person) thing and it just got the ball rolling.

It's really sad to hear all these stories, but it's important that we purge this bad behavior from our community. It can be extra hard because the SC community is so tight-knit, so when we hear about a community figure doing this shit, it doesn't feel like a random celebrity, but like an acquaintance or a friend, doing this.
Besides the obvious moral reasons for stopping this bad behavior, if we allow this to continue, it will destroy the entire community. No more sponsors, no more tournaments, no more support from Blizzard, no more progamers, no more fans...

Rapid always seemed like a creep, used to feel sorry for him but not any more. I hope JP gets banned from twitch and youtube, I feel streaming and video platforms have a responsibility to act.
|
not surprised. JP and rapid always had a creepy vibe
|
|
thats some messed up shit! What happened with JP? Seemed to have missed those tweets

Im just happy it's not about any of the active and well known talent or community figures. Honest to god, I cant recall who Rapid was, and i'm not about to google him. Avilo is a creep, that's known for long and he's always been marginalized. Havent ever heard about that Korean coach/manager. Let's see if there's more coming out, but the above cases, while bad, arent painting a picture of hostile and harassing/abusive climate/ community. All things considered, fairly few cases so far for a 10+ year period, involving hundreds of people.

Is there any proof of that? Oh, I had "no script" enabled and could not see the tweets...

I really feel like just saying "And the Avilo thing with a few girls" isn't shining a bright enough spotlight on one of the worst, repeat sexual predators in the scene. Literally as of a week ago he was still harassing a girl via twitter (You can go look at his twitter, he is @ing her constantly, latest was June 16th) He had art commissioned of the two of them kissing and pinned it to his twitter feed, which she publicly stated never happened). Yet ESL still allows him to play in their weekly cups. It blows my mind how his antics have never been a huge deal within the community (or at least, if they have, I have missed it)

Not really sure what to do. I'm glad that he's banned from twitch but he's still out there stalking and harassing women and it's awful how many people just don't care or enable him.

I am happy there seems to be relatively little sexual harassment within the SC2 community, but considering the very low amount of girls there is, I would not be surprised if the number of of uncomfortable situations and conversations between guys should be higher than the one between girls and guys. It is perfectly possible to harass a guy without being gay.
The worst kind of gender based harassment is probably all the ones calling out girls for being part of the scene because of their gender rather than their qualifications. IMO, it is fine to critizise a female streamer/caster/player etc, but playing the gender card is not acceptable, and is in fact pretty serious harassment.

I am so proud of all of these people. It is not easy to be bullied, harassed or touched and continue living and it is even harder to share it publicly.
Sunlight is a great antiseptic.
Peek-a-boo creepers, Fuck you.
We can't stop anons from being blah on social media, but we can penalize creepers and remove them from positions of power within the community.
May the souls of those that prey on others wither to sand and may the God or Goddess of their choosing punish them accordingly.

Duckdeok was also molested in the Werra teamhouse btw. By the manager Gundam.

The woman who started the reddit post on the same subject evoked a similar experience with someone "very very well known and still successfull in SC2" that is very powerfull. Somehow I don't think she meant Rapid. Anyway no point in guessing, hopefully the comportement of said person has/will change.

The fact that ESL lets him play is ridiculous but as for his popularity, his fans don't care that he's a complete scumbag. They like him for it.
The thing is, nowadays if you just accept the villain mantra enough there is a type of popularity to be gained that normal people that play by the rules can't gain access to.
Avilo has tapped into that. It's not going away without him just being forcibly banned by the various platforms. They don't seem to care though for some reason.
