With only three matches remaining in an exciting year of Korean StarCraft, (Z)Rogue, (T)INnoVation, (Z)Dark and (P)herO gathered to determine the final champion before BlizzCon. Rogue had everything to play for as a victory here would also qualify him for BlizzCon, but the other three player surely had no intentions of doing him any favors as they eyed the 10,000 dollar first prize and another premier event title.

2017_AfreecaTV_GSL_Super_Tournament_2

(Z)Rogue was able to withstand (T)INnoVation's series opening hellbat push before countering INnoVation’s mech with ling/bane/hydra/swarm host. He kept INnoVation pinned back with swarm hosts, eventually dealing the final blow with a 30+ mutalisk remax.

Rogue's proxy hatchery managed to contain INnoVation on one base after a lengthy siege, but INnoVation was mustering marines and, once stimpack finished researching, he charged out and mopped up Rogue's army to make the score 1-1.

INnoVation went mech after opening banshee speed on Whirlwind and failed to prevent Rogue from getting a hive. INnoVation attacked, but lost everything in a series of poor trades against ling/bane/hydra/swarm host, while Also being unable to expand beyond four bases. Rogue relaxed and rolled over INnoVation to take the game.

Mech Depot saw a back and forth war between ling/bane/hydra and bio/tank. INnoVations' constant pressure eventually broke Rogue, however, who was left with only a pittance of queens, vipers and hydralisks on defense.

Game five took place on Odyssey in another ling/bane/hydra vs bio/tank contest. INnoVation maxed out, but was forced back by zergling runbys which gave Rogue space to tech to ultralisks. Rogue pressured INnoVation's economy while winning fights, finally assembling a big enough army to handle INnoVation's last desperate push and book a ticket to the finals.

The series between (Z)Dark and (P)herO began on Ascension to Aiur. Dark prepared to go ling/bane/hydra, but herO's two base adept all in arrived before banelings and just as hydras were hatching. herO gutted Dark's economy, killing nearly thirty workers and eliciting a concession.

herO took the gold base on Odyssey, moving into a charge/immortal timing. It was met by a flood of roaches, ravagers and zerglings, but herO held while also killing Dark's lair with a zealot warp in. herO built up his army and carefully pushed to take a 2-0 lead.

herO put Dark on the back foot by canceling his third with a pylon overcharge and killing the remade third with oracles, but Dark worked his way up to corruptors and ultralisks. herO only had high templar, oracles and zealots which allowed Dark to take the decisive fight and the game.

herO killed a lot of drones and units early on with a committed adept attack in game four, but Dark weathered the storm, assembling a hydra/lurker army that herO wasn't prepared for. He tried to add high templar and immortals to his adepts while harassing, but Dark defended and killed herO's third, forcing a rubber match.

herO's double prisms with archons forced roaches out of Dark, while also limiting the Zerg's economy. Meanwhile, herO built up an army with charge and four immortals, hitting a timing that managed to overwhelm Dark's roaches and hatching swarm hosts, sending him to the final.

(P)herO opened the grand finals with a pair of stargates, prompting (Z)Rogue to go for a roach/queen nydus. herO constructed a pylon wall to limit surface area, laid down stasis wards and pulled probes to successfully defend. From there he simply massed carriers and oracles to go ahead 1-0.

Rogue's 12 pool appeared to counter herO's nexus first, but herO only lost one probe in the defence. He rebuilt his canceled nexus and moved into skytoss. Undeterred, Rogue canceled herO's fourth with corruptors before squashing herO's army with hydra/bane to tie up the series 1-1.

herO's proxy oracle killed seven drones, but Rogue was able to stabilize. Though his initial zergling runbys only killed two probes, his further efforts with zerglings and banelings ravaged herO's worker count. herO desperately attacked with colossus, but Rogue easily held with hydra/ling/bane.

herO's archon drop with zealot warpins bought him a 50 to 46 worker lead with both players on four bases. herO built up a larger army of archons and zealots, smashing down a wall of hastily erected evolution chambers before storming hydralisks en route to evening the series.

herO's proxied twilight for glaives didn't net any damage, but herO was expanding behind it while producing carriers. Rogue went for swarm hosts, sniping herO's natural before wiping out herO's fleet with corruptors to go within one game of winning the Super Tournament.

herO opened with double stargate in game six. He took a faster fourth base while forcing mutalisks from Rogue which proved ineffective. herO got storm, archons, immortals and phoenix. A decisive victory at his fifth base set up a seventh game.

herO canceled Rogue's third with a pylon overcharge on Mech Depot, but Rogue's zergling drops killed ten probes. herO went into carriers, but Rogue was marching across the map with ling/bane/hydra as well as queens. herO retreated into his natural, then into his main, but Rogue was not to be denied. WIth the last of the carriers dropping from the sky, herO left the game, making Rogue the Super Tournament champion and the final BlizzCon competitor.

Rogue was absolutely amazing and fully deserves to get to BlizzCon. He should have already won the GSL season 2! :-)
But I still somehow expect sOs to play at BlizzCon. Don't ask me how, don't ask me why, but he will :-)

What a day! What a year for GSL! I didn't like Rogue in HotS era and now this guy make a revolution this year, he is so good! I'll continue to support TY, Dark and all my favorite protosses, but this guy Rogue is regained my level of respect.

I was told that as well, at great and tiresome length.

Reality decided otherwise.

This is sad times

Whilst I'm happy for Rogue to finally win a big tournament, Blizzcon is not going to be the same without sOs. It's going to be awkward times at the team house seeing as Rogue effectively eliminated his teammate from winning $100K.

Wow, been out of the loop a bit. Seemed like Rougue really rose from the ashes in the second half of this year. I remember coming into 2017 it seemed like he was on his way out.
