Alright so after working my way out of Bronze league relatively quickly I started watching replays and casts of Bronze league games and I noticed that a lot of the same mistakes were made by players, so I wanted to put out some solutions to certain problems that I found were common
Getting Supply Blocked This one is very common, people don't pay attention to their supply until the voiceover tells them something is wrong, and this can cause a huge halt in your economy as well as your army. Getting supply blocked means that until you fix it, no more units or workers, which means you are losing income every second you are supply blocked and are instead waiting for your next supply unit/building to finish
Fixes: If you have extra money laying around and are cutting it close on supply, stack up depots/overlords/pylons to get rid of the extra money and make sure you won't be supply blocked in the near future
As Zerg, try building some structures you need, such as crawlers
If you are in a very tight spot and need instant supply, Terran Orbitals can call down 8 extra supplies on an existing supply depot, this is for emergencies only, realize you are wasting around 240 minerals for not getting a MULE AND you are now losing 16 supply instead of 8 if the depot is destroyed, so don't rely on this
Too many cannons This is aimed directly at Protoss (duh) a lot of times you will see Protoss players try cannon rushes or put 50 cannons in each base, only do this in dire situations, if even then, cannons are expensive and that money could go so many more places, such as upgrades or units. Cannons also take up a ton of space and are easy to work around, if the pylons are destroyed the cannons won't work, and that is 150 minerals sitting there doing nothing, the cannons and pylons will quickly cover you base, making movement of units more difficult
Fixes: Focus more on units and upgrades, these help much more in the long run, I have seen many people lose quickly because all they built were cannons, these things aren't God, they are good in the right situations, but not all the time Note: If detection is needed, build cannons in key areas to help see units such as Banshees
No Orbital Command Orbital Commands are essential to Terran play, allowing for quicker resource collection with MULEs, free detection if needed, and as mentioned above free supplies in desperate situations, why then do so many Bronze players go for a Fortress, mainly in their natural or third, a Fortress is mainly used in bases that are vulnerable to attack or in areas that need extra security, not in main bases where income is valuable
Fixes: This is a simple one, think of all the resources you just wasted by hitting that hotkey, throwing away thousands of minerals, supplies, and detection, always get Orbitals, unless the Fortress is an absolute necessity
Not scouting Scouting is essential, especially in Zerg play, you need to know what your opponent is building so you can respond effectively and deal with his units with counters of your own, fighting blind is never good, and it will lose you games, so always scout if you are unsure what your opponent is doing
Fixes: Send out workers after finishing key parts of your build (examples: wall in finished as Terran, 1st expand as Zerg, Warp Gate research finished) and then build units or structures that will help you fight off the force your opponent is creating I am not going to go into a whole thing about how to scout and when to scout as that is not what this is about, plenty of pro replays and other forum posts can help you with that, I am simply here to help find mistakes you may make yourself
That about wraps it up, feel free to mention any mistakes I forgot (there are plenty, I didn't want to make a 5 page post though) and my intention was not to make anyone feel bad, just to help find your mistakes and fix them so you can improve, thanks if you read the entire thing

I think bronze league is basically getting better mechanics, while learning counter relationships with things that that mechanics can't beat, such as rushes and cheeses and special units like banshees or dts.

It is like Day[9] used to say in some of his dailies, probes and pylons. Then just make stuff and that should be good enough to get anyone out of bronze league. I forget what daily he taught some of the newbie things but that might not be a bad idea to put in here for people that don't know about it.

common mistakes of silver league: same thing
|
Interesting to see someone put an effort to write an article on getting out of bronze league .
|
Couldn't all of these things be avoided if you just suggested that bronze players learn and practice a build (which is much better advice long-term anyway)
|
I would assume most people in lower leagues just play the game without ambition to "improve". Because when it's fun to just play a few games without it feeling like another job, there's no need to improve.
|
Good way to fix all of these issues: play without sound/voiceover. This makes you more aware of all the alerts on the map, visually. Sounds rough, but it's the quickest way to learn and adapt.
|
I'm always nostalgic of the time bronze players went e-bay first. Sadly nobody is that bad at the game anymore

I think I'll give that a try.

I mean who doesn't ebay first PF rush vs protoss?

Funny how people still think making pylons and probes is enough for bronze league. People are not that terrible in bronze, everybody knows how to attack move or make units. It's just super super unrefined what they do
|
Scouting in bronze league like pros do is not that useful because a lot of the time you won't know what to look for and your opponent might not be doing something that makes sense anyways
I would say you need to scout for cheese in the beginning of the game and beyond that you should focus on macro and building up an army.
Unless you're going for cheese/early game aggression yourself, which I think is the fastest way out if bronze

the % of times a player will intend to attack-move and mistakenly just move rises the lower you go in leagues. most players attempt to correct this mistake. the lower the league they are in... the longer they take to recognize their mistake ( on average) and the longer they take corrective action of this mis-click.
do bronze players understand the concept and difference between "move" and "attack move" .. most certainly they do understand. execution is a whole other matter though.

My little cousin has only been recently promoted to silver. So from what I could see, here are the biggest mistakes in bronze and my advice to easily get to ~gold (some of my advice then don't hold up, for instance you can't always play on two bases especially with Zerg) : - not enough workers. It's easy to spend the money you don't have and think you can macro like Bomber. Produce workers non stop and you'll see your resources climb. A good macro player doesn't only spend his resources, he spends as much resources as he can get. - sloppy macro, with lots of supply blocks. Overmake supplies, you'd rather have too many overlords than to be stuck at 30 supply. - stupid move commands, sloppy rally points, especially with air units. Rally everything in your natural and only move out when you're sure your army has a chance to deal damage and then follow it closely. Don't forget to A-move. Favor safe two bases plays and only take a third when your main is running low. - bad game knowledge resulting in lame compositions. Watch pro games to know what type of unit works in every match-up. Be a fan of a player whom conception of the game appeals to you (for me : Rain, Zest, Classic). Even if with good macro you can win with chargelot carriers in PvT, you should favor colossi stalkers play that is far easier to do. Do not bother with spellcasters and fancy micro if you feel overwhelmed, that part will come naturally when your APM rises. Take inspiration from Jim : for a long time he never made templars in PvT because the lag didn't allow him to hit good storms. If you can't micro your templars in the midst of a big fight, don't bother with them, go for archons. - (not contradictory with the previous) HAVE FUN. Don't forget that fun compositions aren't always the most efficient though. See the last item to learn why you should be happy for your losses. - stress and panic resulting in horrendous decisions. At every important turn (you just killed two full medivacs, your third got sniped, you lost a critical upgrade, you lost 5 workers for 6 hellions etc) calmly take one second to assess the situation. Don't sit back if you're 50 supply ahead, and don't leave too quickly. - blame nothing on balance. You're the only one responsible for your losses. Cherish the players that beat you, they're the ones who'll allow you to get better, and you should be thankful for that. A lot of bronze players have a terrible mindset, for instance it's very common to just instaleave games vs a race you don't like.

As someone who has started playing very recently and just progressed through Bronze league, the biggest mistake I saw was simply building enough workers (SCVs, Probes, Drones).
Yeah, getting supply blocked is bad. Sure, not scouting can leave you guessing or poorly prepared.
But here is the key thing - At low levels, your opponents aren't good either, and often fail to punish you for making mistakes.
The game becomes less about "Don't make mistakes" and more about be able to recover from your mistakes. Making sure you have a high enough income and then translating that into stuff (units, upgrades, production) is the number one issue in bronze league.
Learning to harass, defending against harassment, which units counter what your opponent is doing, how fast and opponent can start trying to cheese you, specific builds - all these things can come with time. You'll lose to these mistakes, correct them, and move on. But the core issue at the lowest levels is absolutely working to generate your income to appropriate levels and then making sure you are spending it.

U could change the title to "Common mistakes of bronze to diamond and after-distribution-change-masters league". Sick supply blocks, lack of scouting (blind play) and banking money in the later early game, etc. But at least they know that MULES are good.
|
This advice goes alllll the way up to Masters league tbh.

It's easy to come up with a list of 3-5 things to work on, but during a hectic game all is forgotten. That's why having a macro cycle is a good idea. For me it is 1)inject, 2) make units (check supply add ovis), 3) spread creep. This cycle is constantly repeated as apm spam. If a drop takes my attention, I return to the macro cycle asap.
