Most of the players on the invite list so far seem to have made perfectly decent money year by year so far. WCS offers quite a load of cash, IEM 'regionals' pay out, DH pays out. They get salaries from their teams. I don't really see why players are expected to get a cut of every tournament they're _paid_ to fly out to.

There are no players who depended on 14th place at an IEM event to pay the bills (or any position tbh). If I'm wrong about that, it's a fault of the player, not the tournament.

This will be fun to watch. I haven't followed a SC2 tourney intently in 6 months or so, but I will for this one. Mission accomplished IEM.

Edit: to clarify, I have faith in the sc2 pros that they won't match fix for 25-50k... I hope I am proven right.

Match fixing is if they decide who is going to win before they even play the games. Thats not what ppl are talking about. Its entirely possible, and not even anything wrong with, the final two players splitting so that lets say first place gets 70k and second 30k. They will both play their best to win, just making sure they both get a good amount of money.

There is no way that I personally would play as hard (not necessarily well) if I knew that I was going to receive $50k win or lose.

As a fan, I want to see 2 people playing as hard as they can, knowing one will get everything, and one will walk away with nothing.

players would obviously not split 50/50 but 70/30 or something, so there would be still a huge incentive to win. You are one hell of a fan if you enjoy seeing a guy who got 2 at a GLOBAL FINALS events get nothing. Imagine only the winner of Wimbledon get anything.

I feel like a total as****e having to constantly defend my opinion, but this is just one tourney. I'll keep saying that If any player NEEDED IEM as an income source... well I hope no players planned their life around that.

And yes, I DO think that for every dollar earned that they players will play better, especially if its 20k+

If I was in that position I would NEVER agree to some prize split, It would feel as bad as match-fixing. I hope that the majority of pro's feel the same. Although I'm now not sure if that's the case.

Hate to break it to you, but a lot of SC2 players are piss-poor.

Second place at last year's IEM WC was $15,000. It was also more than a quarter of First's all-time earnings in SC2.

No one plans around getting second, or third/fourth, at IEM WC, but that kind of money could really be make-or-break cash for a lot of the players.

And so it falls onto IEM to solve their life problems? (Oh god this is so harsh)

IEM made a decision to take a risk, make a tournament for /some/ of the fans(I'll admit I fit into the casual sc2 fan category, I may not have watched this tournament if they prize pool was ordinary... but I sure as hell will now).

IEM as an organization has a goal too - to make money. This got me to watch. Does it stop you from watching?

As I've said many times earlier, ESL can do whatever they want with their money and their tournaments. But changing the format of a tournament that has history in the middle of a season is pretty bad form, and unfair to players who have made an effort to qualify specifically with travel and scheduling (and just to the players in general).

If ESL had announced this well in advance, before their season began, fine. If this was another tournament that was added on, also fine. But doing something like this now is extremely unfair to the players.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

The smart thing would be for the 16 players to make an agreement.

All round of 16 finishers get 2k.
All round of 8 finishers get 4k.
All semifinal finishers get 8k
Second place gets 16k
First Place gets 36k

Any player who refuses to sign doesn't get the money for where they finished and their total is added to the winner.

It will probably be the weakest players signing but at the very least it will bring down the top heavy nature of the tournament.

I am sure in the top will be players who already have a nice income, so with the expenses covered, I don't see any problems with this tournament.
Especially funny is BabyKnight's comment "no respect for players". Who can he say this? IEM has already done so many tournaments for players!

Well I would be happy if my favourite player won this but since it's most likely impossible...I would rather they split it.

not really sure what the outcry is. they want to try something new for one tournament. its not like this is how they run every tournament.

In other news...

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced that after year investing in curing a number of pandemics in poor countries, they will now up the ante by investing 1 Billion USD to help relieve famine and malnutrition in eastern and sub-saharian Africa.

"This new project will provide daily meals of fresh caviar and delicious black truffles flown directly each day by private jet from the caspian sea and France. We also secured a supply of Chateau d'Yquem 1990 at less than 300$ per bottle to make this a complete culinary experience, delivered by top chefs rotating weekly to the premises.", Melinda Gates said in an interview, adding "We expect that up to 750 people suffering from malnutrition will now benefit from our help for a period that could extend over one year."

To critics saying that they could have helped more people with the same amount of money, Bill Gates responded with slight irritation: "Look, we've tried to be poor and sick-friendly as possible for years. The Red Cross does that now to feed the unlucky poor. Time for the #GatesFoundation to be a SHOW."

I support this concept.

it's like those old Chinese movies with tournaments where the loser die, so from 64 participants, 63 died, and only 1 was the king of kung fu.

this is natural selection at its best.

IMO I don't really mind this change up I mean they are going to have about 5 other player friendly tournaments with spread out prize pools. I don't mind the change up personally and I think it will make for an interesting event. I don't see whats with all of the complaints also you have to pretty much get to the finals of an IEM event to attend. It's kind of like the champion of IEM and I personally am hype and I mean all expenses are paid so I don't see why anyone participating would complain at a free shot for 100k.

At least this format will take out the players(if they drop out) that aims for topX finishes instead of aiming winning the whole tournament.

This is almost Joker-esque. This is introducing a whole lot of something into the equation, but nobody knows what that something is just yet, not even Carmac. It could be collusion, hype, anti-hype or a completely regular tournament barring the winner-takes-all angle. Anything could happen, big or small.
It reminds me of the time I decided to place my bets randomly in a game of poker. I had no idea what was going to happen. All I knew was that things had just gotten... weird.

So it hurts the players with reasonable expectations? Come on, barring some kind of magic, most foreigners never think they'll come in first place in a major LAN they play in. Same for mid-tier Koreans and all the other guys who are good but not championship caliber.
Most players in a tournament are cannon fodder and they know it. They're cannon fodder for the Taeja's and the Soulkey's of this world, cannon fodder for the people who actually have a chance at winning it all. That isn't to say they don't at least try, though, because they do. They don't honestly believe they'll win it all, though.
This is a good thing, too. Many players have been around for years and never won a major LAN despite being in a lot of them. If they actually expected to win every time they played, the disappointment of having their expectations denied would crush the middle class of the pro scene. Our pro scene would have disappeared ages ago if everyone truly believed they would win all the time.

All the people supporting collusion while dissing the tournament creators for being "unethical".

I think it sounds interesting.
Gonna feel really sorry for the runner up though.

its a nice stunt and change but keep it at just one time. they tried this in poker as well and after a few times most people didnt even bother anymore and the attention will go away.

you have to put in a lot of work and time (practice, travel etc) and ending up with nothing is only something the top players can afford. so the richer will get richer and its not something SC2 really needs right now imo.

but cool idea to do it once.
