It was also more than a quarter of First's all-time earnings in SC2. No one plans around getting second, or third/fourth, at IEM WC, but that kind of money could really be make-or-break cash for a lot of the players. And so it falls onto IEM to solve their life problems? (Oh god this is so harsh) IEM made a decision to take a risk, make a tournament for /some/ of the fans(I'll admit I fit into the casual sc2 fan category, I may not have watched this tournament if they prize pool was ordinary... but I sure as hell will now). IEM as an organization has a goal too - to make money. This got me to watch. Does it stop you from watching?

As I've said many times earlier, ESL can do whatever they want with their money and their tournaments. But changing the format of a tournament that has history in the middle of a season is pretty bad form, and unfair to players who have made an effort to qualify specifically with travel and scheduling (and just to the players in general). If ESL had announced this well in advance, before their season began, fine. If this was another tournament that was added on, also fine. But doing something like this now is extremely unfair to the players.

All round of 16 finishers get 2k. All round of 8 finishers get 4k. All semifinal finishers get 8k Second place gets 16k First Place gets 36k Any player who refuses to sign doesn't get the money for where they finished and their total is added to the winner. It will probably be the weakest players signing but at the very least it will bring down the top heavy nature of the tournament.

Especially funny is BabyKnight's comment "no respect for players". Who can he say this? IEM has already done so many tournaments for players!

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced that after year investing in curing a number of pandemics in poor countries, they will now up the ante by investing 1 Billion USD to help relieve famine and malnutrition in eastern and sub-saharian Africa. "This new project will provide daily meals of fresh caviar and delicious black truffles flown directly each day by private jet from the caspian sea and France. We also secured a supply of Chateau d'Yquem 1990 at less than 300$ per bottle to make this a complete culinary experience, delivered by top chefs rotating weekly to the premises.", Melinda Gates said in an interview, adding "We expect that up to 750 people suffering from malnutrition will now benefit from our help for a period that could extend over one year." To critics saying that they could have helped more people with the same amount of money, Bill Gates responded with slight irritation: "Look, we've tried to be poor and sick-friendly as possible for years. The Red Cross does that now to feed the unlucky poor. Time for the #GatesFoundation to be a SHOW."

it's like those old Chinese movies with tournaments where the loser die, so from 64 participants, 63 died, and only 1 was the king of kung fu. this is natural selection at its best.

It reminds me of the time I decided to place my bets randomly in a game of poker. I had no idea what was going to happen. All I knew was that things had just gotten... weird. On January 28 2014 11:32 ffrozenfish wrote: At least this format will take out the players(if they drop out) that aims for topX finishes instead of aiming winning the whole tournament. So it hurts the players with reasonable expectations? Come on, barring some kind of magic, most foreigners never think they'll come in first place in a major LAN they play in. Same for mid-tier Koreans and all the other guys who are good but not championship caliber. Most players in a tournament are cannon fodder and they know it. They're cannon fodder for the Taeja's and the Soulkey's of this world, cannon fodder for the people who actually have a chance at winning it all. That isn't to say they don't at least try, though, because they do. They don't honestly believe they'll win it all, though. This is a good thing, too. Many players have been around for years and never won a major LAN despite being in a lot of them. If they actually expected to win every time they played, the disappointment of having their expectations denied would crush the middle class of the pro scene. Our pro scene would have disappeared ages ago if everyone truly believed they would win all the time.

Gonna feel really sorry for the runner up though. Imagine all the pressure on the finalists and viewers, should be tense

you have to put in a lot of work and time (practice, travel etc) and ending up with nothing is only something the top players can afford. so the richer will get richer and its not something SC2 really needs right now imo. but cool idea to do it once.
