I didn't call out anybody, im not saying it will happen, but if it does happen, thats what you're telling the community and yourself. People already are talking about drop outs, the sponsers of this tournament already has the idea of a few dropouts as well.
Im not sure why you feel so sure about this, because it is a reasonable expectation.

Should we just be cool with any change that comes along if it is unique?

That's actually a unique idea. If you hate that, clearly you're scared and huddled in your safety bubble.

There is such thing as bad press, which is certainly at play here.
When the options are almost a binary of almost no press or "any press is good press" I would go with the latter.

"any press is good press" is a good draw for one gimmick tournament but it doesn't have long term viability unless the original idea is good.

Forget the invites IEM make the players qualify. Winner takes all is good once in a while.

Of course some people are already qualified.

Takes a lot more guts to pass up an opportunity for big money to try and improve situations for players, than to sit back and accept the status quo.

This point kind of falls flat since IEM is like halfway through their season though, no? Honestly, I don't know how the IEM tourney works. I didn't even know there was a season. However, if the winners of the previous qualifier-tourneys already got paid and this is some 'winner's tourney,' then it's only a matter of being inconsiderate. They should have let the pros know sooner. What ticks me off most though is just HOW inconsiderate they are being. Basically saying "what? You hate the idea for legitimate reasons? Well, even though you're the reason we make money, we'll fuck you over at the world championship to secure ourselves some dirty, end of the season profit money" Secure themselves end of season profit? They are a business trying to be profitable? Would you rather they go out of business instead? Seriously? Besides this is a HUGE sum of money they are giving away. Do you not know why IEM exists in the first place? Like I said before, you can make fun tournaments like this, but you can't execute them like this. Too much offense is take. If you do it as the world championship. Best way to do this is to have something separate, like a special event. "IEM $100,000 Winner Takes All Tournament", everyone that you want to invite will accept the invite. Invite the 16 most famous players in the world. Then you can throw money around to make a side profit, cause then it's actually extra profit, and nobody gets fucked over, and someone ends up really happy! At the very least, make this a previously known detail at the beginning of the season. Don't blatantly screw with the people that make you money.

at first i was "well that's just dumb" but then the hype kicked in and now i'm not sure anymore. i think considering the amount of feedback they're getting, this is working out better than expected for the ESL guys.
only thing they could have done better was to actively promote the "players get flown in and get a once in a lifetime chance to win one million esports dollars" angle, like they do in survivor and similiar hype-machine-shows. because lot of people will jump to defend the players and their livelihood, unless you make it very clear nobody will lose money while getting a fabulous opportunity.
now, if ESL should be THE organization to support the scene and if they are "hurting" others for their own gain by doing this is a totally different point, one i can't force myelf to debate when this will obviously happen and nothing can change their mind.
on that note, i still can't resist saying out loud that i liked Carmacs jab at Nazgul, and also Sockes reseponse to one of the premier casters in EU, cuz they are both very valid points that are being overlooked, and clearly show the double standards in the discussion.

Most of the 16 players will have qualified, with the shit of it being that IEM didn't see fit to announce how the tournament would be run before some of the other tournaments this season which may or may not have affected certain player's participation.

from the qualifiers? You are sooooooooooo against this, and so one-sided looking at only the negatives from this event.

Wow people, why so angry. Someone decides to give 100 000 dollars away to a winner and everyone getting mad.
The way I see it is, if you do not want to try and get 100k don't go? If you want to have a shot at it, then participate. If you lose and miss out such is life, it isn't like IEM is suggesting that every single tournament should be structured this way, it is only one tournament. It will be hectic and exciting.

1. The secure source of income for sc2 players is: WCS AM, WCS EU and GSL. Check! 2. IEM creates a new tournament with the best 16 players for the fans to watch. Check! 3. IEM injects $100K in the sc2 scene. Check! 4. IEM tries something new. Check! 5. Everyone is talking about it and that is creating HYPE. Check! 6. Carmac is a genius imo! Check! 7. SC2 fans are unhappy? Wait what? I am HYPED! :D
Note: Look at it differently... If this tournament does not happen then nobody would mention the fact that those 16 players get nothing. Now 1 of those 16 players will get $100K, how cool is that! :D
