Except who is the "better" caster is largely subjective. The tournament can only have one winner, and whoever that is will most likely be the better player of the pool, at least in terms of mental composure and fortitude. How do you determine "best" caster without resorting to a ridiculously stupid popularity contest poll? I think you're missing Socke's point. Progaming isn't just a hobby for these competitors, it is a job. They spend hours every day practicing so that they can go to tournaments and compete as best they can. e-Sports is NOT a very sustainable environment and only a very small percentage of progamers actually make enough money in prize winnings to make this a sustainable jobs. What IEM is doing with Katowice is frankly disrespecting the players' time and effort that they pour into a job by only heavily rewarding the player that manages to make it all the way. Socke is saying that if you're going to reward the best player and disrespect the hard work of all the other competitors, why not as well do the same for the staff? Only ONE can win after all, and for a lot of players, getting to the finals, the semis, or even the quarterfinals is a great accomplishment that a lot of their hard work has been put into, and not being rewarded AT ALL for it? It creates a toxic attitude and doesn't help out the Starcraft scene in any conceivable way. Just going to quickly correct you. E-Sports no longer only refers to Starcraft. League of Legends is quite sustainable as a career.
Other than that, I agree with your post! Really shouldn't make such a toxic environment. Though, the finalists are going to potsplit anyway, so it's basically like any other tournament, just behind the scenes.

Exactly, some people act like the players would need to play for 2 months in a league system and then only the winner takes some cash, that would be something to get upset about. This is a weekend tournament which doesn't really take that much time, if anything it is a big chance for everyone participating, if you don't have the balls to take the risk, don't play in it!

And the other thing I dont think people are realizing is that no one is being forced to compete. You can always decline your seed and play in some 100$ weekly cup.

I would imagine it kind of sucks for the players, but damn it's going to be so intense to watch now.

E-Sports never referred only to Starcraft....
Semi-related: pretty sure one of the Painkiller CPLs paid $150k for 1st place, don't remember the overall distribution though...

As much as I love BW, Quake was around before it and so were competitive gaming tournaments.
A player called Thresh won John Carmack's Ferrari at the Red Annihilation LAN in 1997.

Is league of legends really a sustainable E-sport career? I may disagree with that statement. If you are a streamer and you make income from donations, subscriptions, advertising revenue, sponsorship and you also participate in tournaments then yes you can make a career, especially if you are on of those lucky streamers with huge viewer counts, but this is still a small number of people, the majority have it rough trying to get by or probably have other jobs.

If the finals end on a blink all in, I will be so sad.... Just the tought of it dosen't make it sound like a good idea, though if the point was to bring the drama, it seems to succeed already
