Ok I'm going to unveil the real reason why SC2 is not as popular:
THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH BOOBIES
There's no female hero in sc2 - in LoL there are tons of powerful and beautiful female characters. Yes medivacs I know, but that's just a voice. In SC2, it's truly a sausage fest. And since 99% of gamers are guys, they can only stand sausage fests for so long.

I lol'd irl. :D Even if there is Kerrigan and Nova in SC2 (but only in the story and not in multi-player).
(I miss the Nurse from BW. I enjoyed clicking on her. Repeatedly. *ahem*)

Seriously though, there is entirely too much whining going on. It's downright depressing coming onto TL and reading through this. I mean, what did you guys expect, for SC2 to beat out the likes of the NFL, EPL, MLB?
Sitting around and bashing SC2 because so-and-so game is getting more viewers, or some nostalgic "BW is the best ever" approach (seriously what other games were out when BW was out that could compete?), just isn't healthy for the scene, and quite frankly shows that e-sports has a lot of growing up to do.
What other games were out?!?!??!?! OMG EVERY single game that died out thats what. And why did they die out? coz of BW. Did other developers jes shut their doors and say gg BW > ALL ofc not. They tried they failed thats all.
Command and conquer #1 before SC. Many sequels too with existing fanbase but all lost to an older game. Age of Empire another great of its time, all its sequel failed due to BW. Total anihilation touted as the greatest innovation in the rts genre died also when compared to BW. Countless of other big budget rts came and die. Oh yes how could i forget DUNE the grandfather of rts. Its not that BW had no competition, nearly all competition pales in comparison to BW.
The greatest testament to BW greatness is WC3. The FIRST RTS of blizzard sequel was planned as a RPG LOL. RTS was ended the day BW came out. Jes that some developers dont know/acknowledge and continued to try make rts (which faded into obscurity faster than my memory can remember). BW was the pinnacle of rts.
What other game is still played 10 years after its last update (where turrets got reduced to 75 minerals) professional with expenses and revenue exceeding millions a month. Bleh i tell u, if blizzard doesnt pump in more money into wcs (ti3 had 2.8 mil+ for a 1 week tournament) to at least around 2.5mil a year, the death of korean sc would inevitably mean the death of sc worldwide. Comparing playerbase of the rest of the world to korea is stupid. Whats important is compare the television viewership. And only in korea u have sc as a mainstream television programme. Rival MBC once again? dream on. But at the very least make sure its a staple of OGN. With ogns also expanding to dota in addition to lol, if nothing is done soon, the osl might actually come to an end after 13 years.

We have so many passionate SC2 fans that it's literally impossible for the game to die, in the west anyways, which is what matters.
If you think the gameplay is stale, wait until LotV is released. Blizzard are saving the best changes for last. It would be stupid of them not to. Well, you could say we were the stupid ones for being milked so hard, but at least we've enjoyed the expansions.
There were 100k+ spectators in WCS. Although that's less than LoL, they are incomparable. SC2 has the HIGHEST viewership for ANY RTS at the moment.
/thread I think you're being too optimistic for LotV. See Sigaty's comments below: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/05/31/starcraft-2-legacy-of-the-void-could-have-less-units-than-heart-of-the-swarm/Admittedly his comments aren't binding, but I wouldnt hold my breath if I were you.
If LotV does not bring abck the science vessel, reaver, lurker, scourge, valkyrie and dark archon in some form or another blizzard is stupid. U want a franchise? bring back the icons. Reaver for toss, lurker for zerg and science vessel for terran. Granted their functions are replaced by some of the newer units and some skills were taken but we're speaking of a real esport. one does not make tennis 2.0

AGREED FUCKING COMPLETELY. wtf would they not even add gender switch, it's what's hot now.

In retrospect, BW blew everyone out the water. But that is a view of knowing the future and interpreting backwards.
From Patrick Wyatt's blog (lead developer of Starcraft)
With everyone looking critically at StarCraft, it was clear that the project needed to be vastly more ambitious than our previous ground-breaking efforts in defining the future of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre with the first two Warcraft games.
At the time of the StarCraft reboot, according to Johnny Wilson, then Editor in Chief of Computer Gaming World, the largest-distribution gaming magazine of that time, there were over eighty (80!!) RTS games in development. With so many competitors on our heels, including Westwood Studios, the company that originated the modern RTS play-style, we needed to make something that kicked ass. Emphasis mine. I somehow doubt there are that many rts games in development now though there are a couple big ones that get released.

Lol that's actually not true at all. BW is an excellent game but it didn't kill other RTS scene by being so good. There are plenty of good RTS games out there that came after Brood War

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH BOOBIES Need to make female skins for units!
I can say that in my friend group we used to be 6 people, grinding out SC2 games, but now only 2 of them have HotS and I'm the only one still watching tournaments and playing the game. Many has considered coming back, but I guess HotS is not worth it to buy, if you only wanna give it a little try. I can only imagine that this is the case for a lot of you as well and soon they'll have to buy 2 expansions to be able to give sc2 a "try" again. They play DotA2 now.

The game's actually pretty good, the UI/Bnet 2 pissed me off far more.
Tbh the incessant moaning and bitching and infighting between MOBA fans, SC2 fans, BW fans. For fuck's sake Lars con Trier makes films that are less depressing.

I agree with most of those points, however I disagree about the gameplay difference between BW and SC2. Yes BW is the more difficult game. However it was more difficult mostly because of the stupid pathing and mechanical limitations like unit selection. If I'm a completely casual spectator I don't appreciate "oh he can only select 12 units at a time" or "oh high ground units get a 30% dodge chance vs low ground units". I appreciate smart decision making, flashy graphics, and cute micro. And I would argue that SC2 excels over BW in all three of those aspects.
Sure pro players might not like the fact that SC2 is more coinflippy and counter unit heavy than BW. But those are precisely the reasons why I prefer watching SC2 gameplay over MOBA gameplay. If MMA is going to defeat Idra 99% of the time off of his superior mechanics like in BW, then that's not exciting to watch as a spectator. But if the game is closer to 60%-40% because while MMA is the better player, Idra might get some lucky coinflips...now *that* becomes an interesting to watch.
Unfortunately nowadays I find myself watching LoL much more than SC2. Because even though SC2 has superior gameplay, Riot does such a better job with all the other non-gameplay related stuff mentioned in the OP.

Thats it. After over 60 pages we found it. The ultimate solution. So we should make a list:
- more Boobs on the maps - more Boobs on the Bnet (Kerrigan on the start screen is a nice start, expect a strip show with Nova and her) - more Ass on the winning screen (bitches always go to the winners!) - the Ghost should be female, the dying scream is already pretty close to what my southern body part wants
or how about Anime skins for our friends from the east:
wuhuu Moe-craft with Tea and girls or imagine a new buyable "skin" for the spinecrawler. With new Balance patch "new Spine crawler upgrade *Tentacle Rape*. No explanation needed "

There was a campaign to get a female model for the ghost in 2009 or so. Blizzard refused because they didn't want to have multiple unit models for the single player, which would have supposedly caused confusion for players that have to deal with parsing the graphics. They did have one for the dark templar though, and there was a different thor for the collector's edition, so I don't know what their problem was. Maybe it's a slippery slope though?

Well they kind of tried with the new cringeworthy over-sexualized Kerrigan, but instead just made her feel like a cheap attempt to appeal to hormonally fueled teenagers. Nova pretty much the same deal. If that's the best the modern day Blizzard can do with female characters, I'd rather they just don't tbh.
Although having a female ultralisk could be sort of cool.

Isn't beating your opponent by being better kind of the whole idea of a competitive game?

Personally, i think watching LoL is boring as hell compared to SC2. Same with Dota2. I have about 3k games in LoL and im pretty fine with this game, i mean i like it. But watching it - i think its too boring. Never watched any of big tournaments except TI3. On the other hand im watching SC2 every day, also at work.

Carbotlings would be ridiculously OP though. People would be too busy going "omgawwtfitssgoshdarnedcute" to think, let alone act coherently.
