MaruPrime followed the Royal Road to the promised land, defeating SKT_Rain 4 – 2 to become the Auction Starleague champion. Despite suffering two, one-sided losses against the defending champion Rain to begin the series, Maru only became stronger under adversity, turning things around to win four straight games. Those four games were reminiscent of his semi-final match against INnoVation, where he took win after landslide win, while the player many had considered his superior was sent reeling with no recourse.
It was the crowning achievement of an unlikely tournament run, as well as one of a long pro-gaming career. Despite being just sixteen years old, Maru came into the tournament as one of the most experienced veterans of the GSL, but one who had failed to distinguish himself as much more than a spot-filler in the thirty-two man Code S. Thus, it was easy to dismiss Maru's run through the the Ro32 and Ro16 of the Auction Starleague as being just a hot run from an otherwise mediocre player. However, a quarter-final win against Symbol, a semi-final sweep against INnoVation, and a grand finals 4 - 2 victory against Rain proved that this was not the Maru of old, but one who had matured in the new era of Heart of the Swarm.
With his victory, Maru became the youngest Royal Roader in OSL history, and brought the beleaguered PRIME team their first Korean title in a year. With his mother crying in the audience and head coach Gerrard fighting back tears as well, Maru offered only a measured amount of outward happiness, true to his reserved demeanor. While some newcomer champions fail to grasp the difficulty and weight of their achievement, it was hard to think that was the case with a veteran of so many failed campaigns like Maru. Perhaps, instead, he was already looking ahead not just to the next challenge at the WCS Season II Finals, but the many more triumphs that might lie ahead in his limitless career.
Game Recaps
Game One - Akilon Wastes: Game one was pretty much a perfect "Rain Game," with the SKT Protoss being allowed to showcase his safety-first style perfectly. Both players opened up with perfectly normal builds, cutting no corners and playing it almost as safe as possible. Rain shut down any attempts Maru had at dropping before they even started, and built up toward his army of death. At some point Maru had to have realized that he had allowed his opponent to do exactly what he wanted and that he was very, very dead, but it was too late by then. Rain pushed out, wiped Maru in the only major engagement of the game, and took the GG. Rain 1 - 0 Maru.
Game Two - Anaconda: Maru decided to go for one of his and teammate ByuN's favorite TvP openers in game two, going for marines, hellions, and a medivac off one base to apply some early game pressure. While Maru did some damage, using his troops to attack both the main and natural together, he was unable to make the attack worth its cost. A follow-up banshee did even less, leaving Maru in a tough spot. Already in a difficult position, things got even worse for Maru as Rain took advantage of his well-placed forward pylon, counter-attacking immediately after killing most of Maru's troops. Rain's attacks took Maru from behind to irrevocably behind, and he GG'd out after offering some token resistance. Rain 2 - 0 Maru.
Game Three - Bel'Shir Vestige: Undaunted by having one of his favorite aggressive builds shut down in game two, Maru went for another one of his signature strats in game three: double proxy-barracks. Although Rain put up an admirable defense, he could not keep up with Maru's impeccable micro and tapped out. Maru 1 - 2 Rain.
Game Four - Star Station: After a very short game three, the series went back to longer games as the players landed on Star Station. Maru decided to go for a mixture of standard and aggressive from his previous games, making a fairly fast expand but also applying some pressure with a marine-mine drop. However, Rain's defense was solid, with cannons already in place to defend the harassment. Afterward the game flowed along normally, which did not seem to bode well for Maru given how game one has turned out. As more minutes passed, Rain looked to be in better and better shape with great upgrades and tech.
Unfortunately for Rain, it took just one sensational engagement from Maru to make everything come crashing down. With vikings, infantry, and most critically, EMPs that blanketed Rain's army, Maru was able completely rout Rain's army in a max-out fight, coming out with a sixty supply lead. Maru marched his remaining across the map to Rain's territory, and with the help of an endless stream of reinforcements, collected the surrender from Rain. Maru 2 - 2 Rain.
Game Five - Newkirk Redevelopment Precinct: With the score tied up, Maru opted to take another risk, but this time it was an economic risk. Going up quickly to three command centers and two engineering bays, Maru looked to take an advantage over his famously risk-averse opponent. However, a good mothership core scout came in at the right time, revealing Maru's plans to Rain.
Whether it was his original plan or a change of direction, Rain decided he would try to punish Maru's greed by going for an immortal + gateway unit all-in off two bases. With just one bunker up, Maru appeared to be in danger as Rain approached, but a critical sighting of the forward pylon tipped Maru off before it was too late. Four bunkers went up his natural, completing just in time to repel the attack. Fully committed to the all-in, Rain tried to force his way through, but it was for naught. Maru's defenses were set, with stim and medivacs soon on the way. After a doomed attempt to play the game out normally, Rain surrendered to give Maru the series lead. Maru 3 - 2 Rain.
Game Six - Whirlwind: With everything on the line, Rain opted to diverge from his normal, safety-first style once more, going for quick dark templar drops while taking a fast third as well. On the other hand, Maru was content to play things out normally once more, taking a fast expansion on the lower ground.
Once again, Rain's gambit did not go as well as planned, with Maru having the awareness and spare scans on hand to wipe out the DTs and minimize the damage taken. With almost no time brought at all with his DT drop, Rain scrambled to put together some kind of defense against Maru's impending stim and medivac timing that threatened to strike his expansion. Although Rain did manage to push out a few immortals and sentries, his force-fields were not good enough to overcome the overwhelming might and numbers of Maru's bio. Rain was forced to give up his third, his natural, and finally, the OSL championship.
Maybe now the Power Rank will respect his achievements. He just defeated the #1 and #2 consecutively and won the most difficult individual tournament in the world.
There is no doubt who is the best SC2 player in the world right now.
So happy Maru took it and got the record and royal roader. Though Rain defending would have been nice as well. I can only imagine Rains thought after the 3rd game "Omg I am gonna get allined 3 times in a row now and end up like Innovation".

No, while Maru's run is impressive, I'd still say Innovation is top dog
So happy for Maru. At a time when many people are questioning the future of a lot of eSF teams, Maru brings a win home for PRIME. And doing it at such a young age, too. Guess he's still technically a veteran, though. So happy for him.

Lackluster finals with a lackluster performance by both players. Rain was so good with drop defense in the first two games that Maru basically gave up on trying them and played a rather straight up style of frontal attacks in the games that he attacked first in.
It'll be interesting if Rain redeems himself in the Season Finals like Innovation did last season finals.
So does this mean out of the three young ones to come to light at the same time... Creator is now the weakest for never winning a major Korean title and never walking a royal road?
Y'all should know how it works by now, bet AGAINST Artosis dammit! I like Rain, but he is my fifth choice for a champion after: Bomber, MarineKing, Jurgen, and Maru. Since Bomber couldn't advance and win I'm absolutely ecstatic that Maru won. Been rooting for Prime since the beginning so glad Maru didn't choke like 2ndPlacePrime... I mean MarineKing

Game one made protoss look like the most broken thing in the world, it actually looked impossible for Maru to win.
And the Star Station game made it look like the opposite, max fight with seemingly decent position for both sides but Maru came out with an overwhelming supply lead.
So happy for Maru, I was hoping he would win. I'm also very happy for Prime, a team full of amazing players who have definitely contributed to Maru's victory.
Dat Artosis curse, I called 4-2 Maru because he called 4-2 Rain lmao.

I didn't see the whole series, but damn, that first game was just absolutely dominating. I'm scared to play on ladder now, that was such a convincing win. I went to bed after game one content knowing Rain would win, just like when I went to bed after seeing innovation up 3-0, lmao I have such bad luck.

Unsurprising considering he was trying to play passively (not even greedily) against arguably the best passive Protoss player.
Gotta say, although it was unexpected, I'm happy for Maru. All I hope is that he won't just fade back into obscurity in a month's time. He's had some good streaks before (obviously they're nothing compared to this but still) but he's also had some rough patches. We'll see...
Also you forgot that Creator won WCS Korea last year as a major korean tournament. (and yes, it was major, all korean top players were in it and the pricepool was not that low either.)
Rain made stupid uncharacteristic mistakes in the second half of the series. Very disappointing finals. Just hope that Maru doesn't end up being the next Jjakji/Seed/Sniper and ends up going nowhere after this.
what a coincidence. prime like many teams who need money in the past, the players on them teams just out of nowhere always start beating the best in the world. not a surprise. while some tourneys arent scripted, some are for the longevity and greatness of the game like NFL
Very happy to see such a dedication being paid off. The kid was playing SC2 since he was 13.. (doing math by the fact that he's 16 now) Can you imagine how much potential he has. MKP has been picking up steam again lately and hopefully DRG could regain his might sooner or later. Granted I have become respectful of Rain and his non-cheesy play (compared to just about every other Chee-toss'es), but he already has won the title once and he can afford to take the 2nd place.
Great recap! Thanks (game 4 recap needs some editing)

GOM and OGN have been pretty insistent that these tournaments are separate even if they are partnered with the WCS.
The Nestea Award (10 consecutive Code S seasons in GSL) wasn't counted in this season for that same reason.
At the end of the day, they are the ones giving out the titles and awards. It's their decision to make. In this case Maru: despite being older than Life and a veteran of the GSL; is now the youngest OSL Royal Roader ever.

lmfao. countless iterations of the phrase "the best SC2 player in the world right now" are thrown around so carelessly these days, it absolutely chuffs me up.
Maru is amaaaaaazing. Deserves the championship. But you, and nobody in the whole world, could possibly know who the best SC2 player in the world is. It kills me to hear Tasteless and Artosis literally crown a new "best player in the world" every few months, sometimes even WEEKS. The funniest part, is the best player in the world is probably some unknown kid in his basement.
I figured out how the artosis curse works. It provides a passive +7 stat boost to all the stats they show at the begining of the game to the player he predicts against.

Is that DT build from the final game possible? It feels like every time I see it the Terran just doesnt care, moves out, and wins because the protoss just doesnt have enough stuff.

Of course it's possible, Rain just didn't execute it good (letting both DTs die to a scan). He still could have harassed the fuck out of Maru's main and even if he wasn't picking off tons of workers, at least keeping Maru from mining off that one base and also trying to pick off tech structures/depots/etc.
It would have bought him time, which is what Rain needed. Unfortunately he only killed 3-4 SCVs and didn't do much at all.

Maru was already moving out when the DT's came, wasnt he? And he didnt bother to turn around and wouldnt have needed to anyway. We saw something similar in Ruin vs Keen on Anaconda. Keen just attacked and won while he lifted buildings.
I remember sometime around tsl4, I was looking at maru like "this kid is amazing, how has he not broken out yet" and even though it took a while, now is his time to shine. I just hope his teammate creator can live up to potential too and not just be a one hit wonder.

They are not kinda combined tough. They are still their own tournament with just the WCS tag pressed on. They both still got their own format and rules.

format is overall the same (minor changes) and players qualified for one of the tournaments are the players qualified for code A, Up&Down, code S from the other tournament.

rain threw game 5 away. He didn't need to attack there. Maru wasn't playing greedy at all IMO. IMO, he did the correct build for the map. Rain saw it and thought he was going to break maru and win the game, but it was bad judgement IMO because I see no reason why terran shouldn't be able to hold off an immortal sentry all in on the map after taking a 3rd CC. Star gate is the only thing that will give that build trouble on that map IMO.

If you haven't watched the OSL finals, you really shouldn't be visiting Team Liquid. That's like looking at the back page of the paper the day after the world cup (or after the superbowl if you're in the US).

There is a way to prevent that, don't go on Teamliquid when you still need to watch a big match, its really not that hard.

you are correct and i alluded to this this in a previous post on this very page.
But i'm not sure why the title of this thread needed to have the results in it
This season really gave me a better appreciation for the TvP matchup in SC2. Back when I was learning Wings of Liberty Zerg and laddering my little gold league heart out to try to get into platinum (the reverse happened; i'm stuck in silver now), I followed the GSL but skipped every single PvT unless the players were Boxer, Nada, or MC (even then I might only watch one game in the series).
Now I want to offrace and can't decide between Terran or Protoss! Even though I feel more comfortable with Protoss (and most comfortable with zerg), I think I'll play Terran in honor of Bomber's deep run and of course Maru's Royal March through the brackets.
I've been rooting for Maru so hard to win OSL ever since he took Innovation. It's clear that Maru has more than Mechanics and Macro up his sleeve and can show more interesting builds like the Raven play that helped him break Rain's hard contain on Star Station.

Complaining about this is like going over to ESPN the morning after the superbowl finished and not expecting to see the results on the front page.
I'm impressed with Maru's ability to not give in to pressure, he doesn't seem to be one to ever choke lately.

Maru is a royal roader. OSL and GSL are still separate despite the WCS tag. It's hard to wrap your heads around it but it is what it is (think Nestea award complaints).

In my eyes this finals (much like the Flash/Jaedong MSL Finals with the powercut) will always be decided by the loser, rather than the winner playing better. I can't help it and maybe it's the fanboy in me but Rain just completely threw that away.

funny, isn't it? Because of the 4 MVP championships, people oftentimes think of those tons of Terran champions. btw. you forgot Fruitdealer for Zerg. I know I know, he fell off drasticly after his championship, but you also mentioned Jjakji so it should be fine! At least he was still around Code S for ~1year.
Not to mention Protoss forget about the WCS Korea going to Creator, Asia to Rain and World to PartinG

It's OSL... not GSL... and it's not "you call it OSL". Blizzard and the Korean organizations themselves have decided to keep the brands of GSL and OSL separate.
Sad day for an SKT1 fan. But Maru showed he's better than most people thought and deserved a title, I wish Rain didn't crumble but oh well Rain is there to stay at the top, he's proven he's a top solid player.
Just watched the VODs. Really glad that Maru managed to win it, despite everyone thinking he would lose. His level of preparation, shown against Rain, Innovation and Symbol, are close to reaching Mvp's levels, I'd say. So happy for Maru, and I hope he continues to do well in the future.

Can you link? I'm not seeing anything on OSL Twitch.

About as hard as clicking the "hide spoilers" checkbox on the front page?
Not only that, there was an entire news article a *long* time ago (i.e. this has been happening forever) about how TL wanted to be more of a news site and not just a recap nice and spoilered kind of thing, and if you didn't want to feel spoilered, there is a hide spoilers button on the front page...

This website posts esports news as it happens, if you don't want the results to be spoiled then simply don't visit the website until you watch the VODs or the restream. Complaining about this is like going over to ESPN the morning after the superbowl finished and not expecting to see the results on the front page.
yes you have a legitimate point here, but i suppose i'm asking for a compromise. The reason I visited the site was because i wanted to watch the other WCS's (i only buy the korean ticket) and in between one of the matches I happened to stumble upon the title of this thread which spoiled the results of the finals. I realize this is a news site and I usually don't come here until after all the VODs because of that; however I'm not sure why the results of the match had to be the in thread title. Like the other poster suggested already,. maru vs rain recap should have sufficed IMO

You can always use twitch or the WCS b.net site to view the WCS streams without going to TL. While I do agree the name of the thread could have been different, common sense dictates to not come here until you have caught up on the VODs if you don't want to see the results(especially when a major tournament is involved).

yes i realize this, but i always come to this site for sc2 streams (hardly a bad thing for team liquid) so that thought did not occur to me at the time.

Oh see I don't pay for the GomTV ticket. They have been posting all the previous WCS matches to http://www.twitch.tv/wcs_osl/profile usually within 24 hours, but not these.

There is a real spoilers issue with titles like this. I have the "no spoilers" button clicked, and feel comfortable coming to TL before knowing the results, but then on the sidebar that links to the top 6 threads in each forum, titles like this give away the spoiler anyway.
Its even worse when the title of the Up/Down group threads starts with the names of who advances.
Its frustrating to click the no spoilers button and think you are safe but thread titles needlessly spoil them, and they show up on the front page. As others have said, its just as easy to not have a spoiler in the thread title (and was the traditional way of titling threads) to say "OSL Finals Recap, Maru vs Rain", or something similar).
TL should be aware that its "no spoilers" button is ruined by thread titles like this.

The No Spoilers button can also be applied to thread titles in the sidebar, if it's not been applied then there's an issue with the original post itself, not with the No Spoilers function. The Spoiler tag or whatever they use hasn't been applied to the post.

Its frustrating because I love SC2 and enjoy watching tournament VODs much more when I don't know the result, which is pretty reasonable. I enjoy watching every single GSL VOD, and the Up/Down groups are a lot of games that I enjoy over the span of a week or two. I have the no spoiler button clicked and don't ever go in threads that would spoil any games for me or contain discussion of the games themselves, yet WaxAngel's threads spoil everything by their thread titles showing up in the sidebar. This goes against the whole point of the spoiler tag and its application.
I'm fine with the "no spoilers" button application and think that is fine, and as was noted it can be applied to thread titles; it just hasn't been for all the Up/Down results and the WCS Korea finals thread for this season.
It stinks to know you have no spoilers clicked, and can't wait to see the OSL finals, and have the result given away because of a thread title that should have had the spoiler button clicked on it.
Edit: Dota has their TI3 thread titled "TI3 finals recap", the sc2 thread creators should be just as considerate by either hiding the title in a spoiler or by titling their thread "OSL Finals Recap" or something of that sort.

Saw your link earlier and saw the games were there. Was planning on saving them for before I went to be and now they apparently have been taken down. Damn GomTV.

Almost the same happened here. I was watching the series, and when I was trying to load game 6, it appeared the message that the User had to remove the videos

Last season I wasn't able to catch Innovation vs SK live, so I went to GomTV when I came home to watch the VoDs. No TL, no Twitter, no Facebook, no risk. Coming to TL, even when you've clicked "Hide spoilers" is asking for trouble, especially when you've only got a single match to watch.
