After a long (for us) break from streaming, ROOT Gaming is back and broadcasting from our new Team House. With 8 players residing here currently, you can expect a lot of good content in the near future.
CatZ ViBE Kane Minigun Puck Succeed Drewbie Sage (for a few more days) Me (making videos for you)
Located in Antioch, California in the East Bay,the house is situated within driving distance of several major companies, including Twitch and Blizzard's new San Francisco office. We plan on attending local LANs and helping to grow SF as a center of American eSports.
A full house tour is coming soon, but for now, you'll have to make do with this mishmash of clips recorded over the last few days since our return from MLG Anaheim. We got thoughts from a few players during our setup and internet installation, and I threw in some clips from what will be separate videos (like Master Barber Sage working on Drewbie). So enjoy, and let us know what you'd like to see come out of this house.
For those of you who are curious about how the money from our fundraiser is being spent, here is the most recent breakdown: + Show Spoiler +
$4468 - Travel $6000 - Security deposit and July rent $3262 - Beds, desks, some chairs $2000 - Car $308 - Cleaning Supplies $631 - Team Groceries and kitchen supplies $374 - Internet setup and first month $55 - Costco membership $54 - Video Equipment $44 - Switch for more wired connections
ROOT4ROOT. I look forward to seeing the results of the hard work and effort that the ROOT house environment will help to foster. I really hope the dream of a North American esports city comes to fruition.

thats rent and security deposit, which is usually a month of rent itself. So is probably 3k a month, which is high, but for 8 guys to live in, its not that bad.

It's a little less than 600 a month, which is very reasonable for the area.
Really nice ! It's very nice that everybody is in the same house but i hope that you guys set up some kind of scheduled training, inhouse league etc...Coach CatZ please !

I'm pretty sure it was 100+ there for about a week. It was here in Sacramento.
There is going to be a LAN in Berkeley which really isn't that far from Antioch. Would be awesome if some of the ROOT players sign up and play! Berkeley LAN

I was more thinking of common area space. And of course they have their own room. How is Sage going to entertain the ladies if he has to kick out his roomie? Players need to sleep and they can't be interrupted every time he brings a fangirl home.
Pretty cool, anyone know the actual sq footage of the house? How many beds, how many baths, etc? I hope they are successful, it would be a real shame if they had to close down due to money problems.
Oh man, just watched the videos, that is a brave man's haircut. Also, it is total bullshit that they access to a water slide. I mean totally fucking bullshit.
And no one should play SC2 in 100 degree heat. Seriously, there is a long list of shit that you shouldn't do in that heat and be near a computer is one of them.
it's so cool awesome that you included the break down of the money, it shows you really respect the donations thank you for being so straight up i would not hesitate to donate in the future!!!
If the security deposit and the rent are equal then you're wayyyyyy overpaying , 3k/month rent is insane. ( I basically live in Antioch and my dad's in real-estate )

I think you can find plenty of nice houses in that area that are 3000-4000sqft for about $2000-$2500, So, unless they went bigger than that (which is pretty fucking big) then you would be correct. However, the deposit could be higher than average which would put their rent in a reasonable price range. Also, there are rental places that add extra to the deposit or tact onto the rent when multiple adults that aren't from the same family are going to be renting from the same place. If that is the case, then I would say they got a pretty good deal considering that they probably found a place with a lot of square footage.

This is great to see. At first glance I thought it might be a waste of money, but giving each person a little more privacy could lead to it being easier mentally and physically for them to stay longer at the house. That, and possibility of lots of other pros coming to visit
Is there anyone coaching? Without a coach to keep everyone in check, this house will be a fail sooner or later. Really should get a coach or someone to manager around the house. In case you haven't noticed Korean team houses always have some authority there keeping everybody focused on training, it's not just bunch of friends living together and playing sc2.
Isn't the security deposit / rent very high? I don't know about prices in the US, but for example you could rent a house in Germany, Düsseldorf (quiet expensive) with 230m² for 2100€/month or a 200m² living-space and a total of 1200m² area for 3000€.
Seems quiet expensive in the us? :o I wish them best of luck :-) Wish I could live in a Gaming house as well T_T

Without a proper authority like a coach or manager in the house, eventually the house becomes a frat house sooner or later. I believe it was in one of the first episodes of Meta where Catz said that he is a friend rather than a team owner to guys living in the house. To me that sounds like this whole team house is doomed to fail before it even properly gets started. This is nothing like a Korean team house if there is no strict practice culture and for that you need a proper coach. If I had given them money I'd be seriously disappointed at them right now.
All that being said, I hope they can prove me wrong. Good luck.

If it is good enough for League of Legends teams in the LCS, it is good enough for SC2 players. The question is finding a coach with the appropriate skills in player management and the ability to assess the player's strengths and weaknesses. I am sure they could get someone who coaches sports teams and have a work knowledge of SC2 to fill that role.
Also, I don't know how you can be disappointed when they just barely got their internet running. Stuff takes time and they can't do everything at once.
I'm very impressed with the transparency as far as funds are concerned. It's nice to know exactly where the money we donated is going.
I have a feeling we're going see big things from ROOT soon. Even if their results aren't great, the forward strides they're making in eSports by experimenting like this are going to be very important.

I hate to guess at how things are setup, but that usually isn't how it works.
Usually you pay 1 month of rent as a security deposit(which you would get back if you don't destroy the place) and then you pay your first month.
So for $6000 it would be $3000 deposit + $3000 first month rent. Again, I don't know how they set it up but this is typical for a rental more so than what you described above.
As far as the cost goes, for a house that has as many people living in it as they do really not bad.
I love seeing a new team house open up! Congrats to ROOT hope you guys can really start to improve and challenge for some wins now that most of the players have a dedicated practice environment.

Well considering top internet package from comcast is $115. I am assuming there was another $50-$100 install charge. Considering what they spent they might have gotten a tv/phone package as well. Only other thing I could think of was that they purchased a business plan but that is usually slower speeds than home plans.
Either way Comcast = Scam, same goes for Charter and any other cable company that gives these bullshit speeds for such a high cost.

Out of curiosity, what is a bullshit speed for you?
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I find it hard to believe this will be sustainable.
I mean, even Riot's salaried teams have difficulty maintaining financial stability and staying in gaming houses. (See the latest LoL Reddit posts about team Marn). And they receive 12.5k per player per season + 25k for the team.
Quantic closed its teamhouse. Complexity too. Why would Root be an exception?

Or they could of went with commercial pricing (such as a direct fiber line) instead of your standard residential plans that you normally see. If they did indeed go with the business plan, then the amount they are paying isn't to far out of reach for the speeds they should be receiving.

if a team of 5 pro players, cant survive off of 80k a year... they all better quit and go find really nice paying jobs.. speaking as thats pretty much an average salary for a small family..
They are getting 85k for essentially nothing... if they stream, get sponsor money, get money from tournament winnings...
if they are not able to sustain themselves its because they are all morons with their money, and would fail at sustaining themselves regardless of how much they made.
I live in So Cal and own my own 3 bedroom house in one of the more expensive areas of So Cal outside of LA/Orange County, and support myself, pay for everything, and am still sitting on a decent cushion of a bank account and I dont bring in 85k a year atm...especially 85k just for existing and playing a video game all day.

The only difference being that sustaining that family doesn't include frequent international flights, hotel payments, and lots and lots of computer costs. That 85k should be able to keep them, yes, but I could see it falling apart quickly if they don't learn how to cook and learn how to save money effectively.

My point is that if they arent making it... its because they arent spending their money effectively. It can easily be done, especially with the way LCS is set up.
Anyways
My biggest thing is Why did they pick Nor Cal, when tournaments, comic-cons, and other major conventions are held in So Cal. Also LAX is one of the most major airports in the US,(if u are flying to another country from the west coast... ur going to pay to fly to LAX..then to whatever country...why add on this additional flight by living far from LAX?) what does it benefit to be in SF other than "because EG is moving to SF"
Blizzard is based in Irvine...also down the street from Anaheim/LaX... if anything shouldnt teams be supporting an idea similar LCS by moving closer? Not to mention NASL is also in So Cal?
IDK would loved to have advised on that meeting. Seems like they are spending near 3k a month on rent.. for 3k a month they could get a 5 bedroom house in So Cal near Irvine, Anaheim, LaX easy... would eliminate at least 10k+ in expenses (Flying 10 players to a major US tournament and getting rooms) as long as MLG keeps coming to Anaheim (but lets be real Anaheim is one of MLG's most lucrative events)
I dont understand the benefits of living near SF. I am not saying they should have looked to move to Anaheim, but they could have lived somewhere that was within easy driving distance (15-20 mins) to the Anaheim Convention Center/LAX/Blizzard HQ in a similar sized house, in possibly a better area for that amount of $$.
idk it seems like "becaue SF is the hip place to be" is the only real reason to move a team near SF, because there isnt a single major event that travels to SF, and if costs is an issue why not move somewhere that will make the most financial sense...? If you are going to spend the extra $$ to be in Cali, why not be close to the important gaming infrastructure already here?
Again, they're not actually in SF. Antioch is quite far from SF. I'm not sure of their specific location, but I live in the city (in the presidio, right next to the golden gate) and it's literally a 1hr+ drive to get to Antioch.

They didnt want to be in SF cause living in SF if your trying to save money is a TERRIBLE decision when you have the choice of living ANYwhere and your only criteria is good Sq ft per dollar.
It just seems like the decision was made...
"Where should we live?"
San Francisco!
"Why?"
IDK its the only major city i know in California?
"Ok... San Francisco is retarded expensive for a house big enough for all of us... lets move an hour outside of San Francisco!"
It just doesnt make sense to me how they ended up in Antioch.... seems like such a terrible idea, unless they are poorly informed by someone else, maybe a member of the team who wanted to live in SF because "its cool"
Also read the team marn thing on reddit because it intrigued me... i got to the 4th paragraph and already understood how terrible and irresponsible they were with their money, and realized why they were doomed to fail.
"Clakey wanted a house near the beach"... here is a great way to spend an extra 500-1000$ per month rent... for no legitimate reason other than "because i want to" fine... its your right to throw away fistfuls of cash if u desire..but u cant complain then about lack of support leading to your downfall.
read through the rest of the team Mrn situation... this is what happens when you throw money at irresponsible children who have never had to worry about bills/rent etc. It's quite silly to blame any of their situation on their lack of funding... their problem was they had a moron for a manager, along with 6 other clowns who dont understand anything about responsibility (like forfeiting a sponsorship because "they didnt feel like" making guides for Mobafire) they were spending 4000 a month on rent...because they wanted to feel baller... soooooooooooooooooooooooo dumb lol.
really hope noone looks at this as reasons why a pro-team cant sustain themselves.

Marn had a large beach house in Santa Monica. It was incredibly expensive. They were able to afford it, the drama about the money now is they're no longer an LCS team. Which makes them sad because they didn't save properly and have little to no monies left.

I don't know how it works exactly , but I would imagine that the more people that watch their streams, the sponsors probably pay them more, or perhaps if they get people to buy stuff from their sponsors they get a cut of it. In addition, they have people that subscribe to their streams which basically gives each of them a monthly income, and they also get donations and anything like that.

They dont win tournaments, they just play it.
You don't have to win tournaments to be a part of the community and have fans.
Sure you are right .... but how do you get the money from sponsors without any pretty good results ?!
What a weird world in we live :/

And thats the next point ... you only get a lot subscribers if you are good, entertaining, and talking with your subscribers, you just get like nothing if you just play, do not commentate anything or either keep stucking on master level
Thats all really weird for me ... but anyway i should not care so much about it
Good that they are finally made a strike with the house ... i hope they enjoy their time inside and they all keep advancing their skill ... maybe we can see some of them in some great international tournaments placed in a good spot ...

The vast majority of the money that made this possible was from a fundraiser. Which isn't constant income. I don't know the numbers with how much streamers make, they keep it so secret Regardless they have 3 people streaming currently with 940 viewers, that seems low. With the sub feature, they would have needed over 1700 subs just to cover the airfare. Their sponsor list seems small as well. This endeavor was brought to you by generous fans.

They rented a beach house when their income was only guaranteed for 3 months...yeah...

Good thing is that a lot of the money went to one-time-only expenses (security deposit, furniture, car), but I agree. I do not see them sustaining the house on streaming alone (nor did I ever expect them to). Most likely, they will resort to selling merchandise, but I am also eager to see, what else they come up with,

For sure they need much more for income than they have now ... cuz i think they have a fanbase but its not that big at the moment, cuz they miss a leading light, like other teams have it.
I really hope they can keep it up with the teamhouse !

Pretty sure we're not talking about your ordinary single family internet.
100 down and 5 up is bullshit. The down is ok but the fact you only get 5 up for >$100 per month is bullshit.

Or they could of went with commercial pricing (such as a direct fiber line) instead of your standard residential plans that you normally see. If they did indeed go with the business plan, then the amount they are paying isn't to far out of reach for the speeds they should be receiving.
Business speeds are slower than residential speeds most of the time. Also knowing comcast that is most likely true. Also comcast doesn't do fiber.
Call me crazy but I'm confused how this is expected to sustainable when fan donations were apparently needed for the vast majority of start up costs...and only covered the first month.

the main thing that is bullshit is the upload. You having 50 down is plenty to use. Also even though I was paying for 100 down I never reached those speeds on any of my downloads.

You have to remember that things are advertised as bits instead of bytes(8 bites=1 byte). So, 100 down is actually only a speed of 10mb/s. The new google fiber lines and Japanese lines are between 100-200mb/s; advertised as 1-2gig lines. What he is saying about upload is very true. It does not have ample cost differential between up/down and it's literally just private companies without competition being able to do what they want. The best area to get internet is a place where the ground is very cool; so added heat also increases prices. That, or you can just go to insane industrial hubs like Seoul or Tokyo and get insane net for very very cheap because it's in such demand.
In any case, I've heard many iffy things about cc during peak times so hopefully their streams hold up well, and in other games as well. Will be sweet to see a large majority of their house streaming all at once

You can also get near 100/100Mb speed in certain locations in San Francisco and berkeley for only 45$ a month by an isp called WebPass. They also advertise some areas as 200/200 but I don't have experience with that to confirm how accurate it is.

This, and maybe get them waxing cars and painting fences? As soon as they start to complain, stick them next to the keyboard and hey presto.... They'll smash it into pieces and become the Karate champs they were born to be!
Wait... That might not help the SC2 much, maybe don't do that...
