Hello community

I have had many games recently where I accidentally double-click workers when trying to select a single one to perform a different task other than mining. Usually I will click a worker, but then not be sure if I hit it or the ground, or another one, and then I click again at a speed which I would not regard as counting as a double click.

I'm sure many are familiar with the annoying situation that then usually follows:

+ Show Spoiler +

I thought initially that there could be something wrong with my mouse settings, or that the driver itself was malfunctioning, but after much troubleshooting, including uninstalling/re-installing drivers, switching mouses, and indeed computers, I have discovered that the time between clicks needed for a double-click to activate/register needs to be much shorter in the windows control panel "double-click test screen" THAN inside the game of Starcraft 2.

So my conclusion is that Starcraft 2 does not take the windows, and/or mouse driver settings into consideration with regards to the selected double-click speed.
A speed which I have selected as the fastest, meaning that the shortest amount of time between clicks are required for a double-click to register. My setting is at 11, while Starcraft 2 seems to default or override to what would equate as 6 in the windows setting.

I made a recording of the double-click speed registering at a much slower rate in the game than in the windows double-click speed tester, while having the speed set at the fastest (11). I filmed my monitor so you could hear my clicks. I also ran a metronome in the background so I could have an accurate timing in between what would register as double-clicks.

I found that Starcraft 2 registers a double-click with a rhythm of 124 beats per minute, so that means two mouse clicks within about one second. This again, corresponds to the middle setting (or 6 if you will) in the windows setting.

If I set the speed to the fastest (or 11), it is not sufficient to double-click at a rhythm of 124 BPM for it to register as a double-click in the windows double-click tester, but still Starcraft 2 registers a double-click at 124 BPM as if nothing is changed from the default windows speed of 6.

Anyone can test this easily for themselves. Here are the steps:

1. Go to this metronome webpage and start a beat of 124 BPM http://a.bestmetronome.com/
2. Open up windows control panel, select mouse properties
3. Under the buttons tab, and "Double-click speed", select the fastest speed setting, then apply.
4. Time your mouse clicks inside the mouse control panel tester box with the metronome beat.
5. Confirm that it does not register as a double-click.
6. Open up a game of Starcraft 2, make sure you have 2 or more units or buildings on the screen, click on one of them while following the 124 BPM rhythm of the metronome.
7. Confirm that double-clicks are registered by the selection of all units/buildings of this type, or in other words, SC2 ignores your windows double-click speed setting, and uses the default of 6 (or middle).

Hm, so that's why the double clicking to select a kind of units never felt right to me and I always had to use control. Nice find, hope they fix it one day..

I had this problem. The problem, interestingly was solved through a manual dpi change of my mouse. (Can change dpi with a button click on my mouse to 800/1600/3200)

I was doing this a bunch with HOTS launch, I had assumed I was just screwing up a lot. I'v adapted by now, so, if they fix it, it'll screw me up because it'll be TOO easy to double click XD

It think it has always been like this. I really would like the possibility to adjust double click in SC 2 itself because the SC 2 double click is just so easy to accidentally trigger.

Are you sure you are talking about the same thing? This has nothing to do with mouse sensitivity or dpi, that option works fine in the game. This is about the rate of speed in which a double-click is registered. If you set the double-click speed to 11 (max) in the mouse properties under windows control panel, the game does not take it into account, and it remains at what seems as the default 6 (middle). Which for me, is way too slow for a double-click to register, causing the inadvertent "select all units of this type".

If they fix it, I'll be very glad. It would not screw you up, because you could select the speed you wanted for yourself. So you could just leave it at the windows default of 6 (middle).

They have given us the option to select mouse sensitivity, and the option to override windows sensitivity. I don't see why they shouldn't allow us this double-click speed option as well, instead of defaulting it to the rather slow middle setting.

I have this problem all the time! :0
So annoying to get all units selected when shift-clicking 2-3 units fast.

Agree.

You could start a new thread on the battle.net techsupport forum requesting this feature. I did so with a similar topic (the 51 % rule), here. The feedback from Blizzard has been small up to date …

I actually would like it if you could disable the double click selection. Is there such an option already? I can't check myself right now :p

I'd never personally want to remove it despite my never using it and it only having ever hurt me.

control+click is much faster (two simultaneous clicks instead of two sequential clicks) but I keep imagining some scenario where my hands are on the function keys and I need to grab all the ______ without selecting _______ and only double clicking will save me.

It's never happened, but I keep thinking it might.

The worst thing about double click is trying to do it on moving units, particularly fast/small ones like zerglings. Nonetheless I somehow have a habit of doing the double click and never the ctrl-click.

The fact it's 2 sequential vs 2 simultaneous may be misleading because it's only simultaneous if the a finger is on ctrl, otherwise it takes the time for a finger to get-on and press ctrl. it may seem like a small amount of time, but so is a double click.

Of course my biggest limiting factor when it comes to hand placement is that I keep my pinky over control near constantly which really strains my ability to hit 6-9 on my hotkey setup (I moved 0 to ~) This not only bothers my ability to use 10 hotkeys but it also has hindered my ability to learn to use F5-F8

Hey guys

So I have been in contact with more game managers via the blizzard ticket system. They are unable to give an explanation to this issue. They recommended I make a post in the bug report forum on us.battle.net in hope that the developers would respond, so that is what I have done.

The game managers said they had not seen anyone else report this issue, so I would appreciate it if you could follow the simple steps below and then post your results in my bug thread on us.battle.net, here:

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/8891579140#1

I also updated my OP with these steps, and replaced the video with a better one that more clearly demonstrates the bug, including the use of a metronome. You can see it here:

The lack of people reporting it is likely due to people leaving the double click speed at the default, I've never seen a reason to change it.

I can’t post, because I only have an EU account …

I agree that most people don’t notice this, because they have double click speed set to default. But there are those who always set double click on fastest — which now gets punished by SC 2. ;P

Hey blueslobster!

Yes you are probably right. It just seems like such an easy thing to correct though, and surely should not take much programming.. I can nearly imagine: "Override windows double-click speed = 0" in the variables.txt

I could not post on the us.battle.net at first either. It's annoying, but you have to start up starcraft then select region USA, then create a character for you to be able to post there.

I hope you can do it though, maybe a dev. might reply if there were some more posts about it in the bug thread.

I always thought I was misclicking or something under pressure. I came back for lotv and this always felt a bit off to me, but I didn't notice it because there's so much that felt weird.

Wow, this happened to me again today. There are a few issues that i'm sure exist in the engine and keep tripping me up that i originally thought was just user error.

I didn't see this thread originally but it's a great explanation. Surprised that this (and a few other problems) have not gotten more attention from the community, but the biggest other issue that i suffer from could be related to drag-scrolling the camera and i drag scroll far, far more than the average player. This one should affect everyone who clicks regularly, i've seen a lot of people do the oops-i-accidentally-sent-all-workers thing and done it a lot myself. It's like a one in every 50 games thing if you're careful but when you've played hundreds to thousands of games, it will happen to you a lot.

so i also found out that if you click a worker, press the hotkey to another unit, and immediately click on a worker again, it will "double-click" all workers.

i.e.: click a worker, then any hotkeyed unit(s), and then the worker again, then hotkeyed unit, etc. repeatedly. if you do it fast enough u can see that it selects all workers every time. as if it thinks you double-clicked on the worker.

shouldnt it break the double-click cycle whenever another action is used in between the double clicks?

This makes sense. I have been getting so frustrated in recent months by accidentally selecting all units or workers when trying to single click but twice in a row. I even stuck my windows double click speed down to something incredibly low, but obviously it didn't change it in SC2.

Having nearly an entire second between the first and second click is absolutely not a double click, that's two separate clicks in a game as fast as SC2.

I would love to see this fixed, but I guess this far in the life of SC2 we're not going to see it happen.
