At least we will still see him stream from time to time probably =). He just wont be tearing it up in tourneys but he will still probably play for fun.

E-sports is a flop for players to waste their youth on on the wallets of sponsors. No way e-sports in the west is going to reach the scale of those of Korea (which its scene is also struggling as well),

Commentators like Artosis and Tasteless can sit there and tell everybody to support e-sports and SC2 because they can simply find other jobs in the broadcasting field once SC2 is gone, But what about the players? You'll always need a Plan B and Stephano is smart enough to have an exit strategy.

esports in korea is not suffering, sc2 is.

I'm pretty sure having their live audiences shrunken by 90% and their TV viewers dwindling counts as suffering. E-sports is making less and paying out less in Korea.

There's a reason why MBC shut down, there's a reason why Ace shut down, there's a reason why countless high-funding teams got shut down. There's absolutely no reason to open a new well funded team in Korea. Who's going to watch someone go out there and play stupid video games? There's just so much to be doing in Korea nowadays that only "losers" will go play video games.

To illustrate how badly e-sports is doing in Korea, they seated 5,000 people for the biggest event last year, the LoL finals. That's 1/4th the amount of people at MLG Anaheim. That's not even a drop in the bucket compared to the old OSLs.

Koreans are also much more social than Americans in general to begin with. PCbaangs have also changed. The majority of them are horrible and shitty, with extremely old computers. They used to be very nice for most of thing you wanted to do back in the day (some still are, but these are high end). PCbaangs aren't a place to socialize at anymore, it's a place where part-time culture or unemployed bums sleep while playing video games and ordering cheap noodles.

It's stupid as hell to assume that e-sports is a viable career path for a young un unless they actually make what flash did. Heck even nada and boxer are broke. Even the best at any given e-sport will only be looking at a 6 figure salary for a couple years then retirement with little to no vocational skills and little education.

Compare a run of the mill doctor or an engineer to the best progamer. Making even $350,000 for 3 years then making $15,000 a year is a lot worse than making $70-100k a year to begin with, then steadily rising even higher than $350,000 a year if you're actually good enough. Staying in e-sports for the long haul is a bad idea unless you're a businessman.

How do you know that Nada and Boxer are broke?

While some parts I agree somewhat this is horribly misinformed.

Nada and Boxer definitely have enough money to live the rest of their lives without work. Nada was earning more than $400,000 a year even when he was retired, and Boxer still earns money from sponsorship when he doesn't play because he is an iconic figure.

Most of the retirees in BW still earned a lot of money after they retired, I guess its part of the retirement package due to short term careers, compared to the average wage earner in korea a successful progamer earns a lot more.

League of Legends is hugely popular in korea, I don't know where you got the 5,000 from, I saw the Azubu vs Najin finals myself. Sometimes you saw crowds as big as the OSL and this is coming from someone who doesn't even follow LoL.

Um, can anyone back this up? $400,000 a year after retirement seems like an absurd overestimation, but then again I don't know enough about Broodwar at it's peak to refute these kind of numbers.

Thanks for everything you have given to us, Stephano. I never regretted watching you play. At times you were invincible. Your play was so smooth and refined, nearly flawless. You broke records as a foreigner and revolutionized the gameplay with your talents. As a fan, I don't feel any negative emotions about this at all whatsoever and that's how I know this is the right decision. Good luck with school and the next step in your life.

With Stephano leaving soon and Idra gone, EG must have a lot of salary money freed up. I would really love them to use some of it to secure a permanent move for Jaedong to EG (he's still on loan, right?). Really looking forward to see what kind of moves EG does after these events. Jaedong, Suppy, and Revival, is still a very good zerg base to build upon. I'm just a little worried that maybe Suppy will take the same route Stephano is going and opt for studies>sc2.

There he goes. Its sad but understandable.
I wish him all the best for his future.
He is and was the best foreigner at SC2 and one of the best players world wide. Maybe not a real Pro, but a kid with a god-blessed-talent when it came to SC2.
Someone that nobody knew before SC2, and made a name within a short time in the Starcraft scene, because he was such a skilled player.

A true Legend will leave a big hole when he leaves. I hope someone else can fill this hole in the future again.

Guys guys guys... slow down on the best-ever bandwagon.

Huk and Naniwa did pretty well at their prime when they went deep into the GSL. That's something Stephano has not done. Yes, Stephano defeated foreigners in MLG or NASL, but his performance at BlizzCon and WCS Final are out-done by Sen. He's definitely up there, but don't forget other foreigners all the sudden.

not a bad thing, though I wouldn't have minded either of those two scrapping by.

Best foreigners are Naniwa and Lucifron, and then others like SaSe.

First, you have no idea what pro's actually make financially. You're just pulling random numbers out of your ass so as to support your negative statements about the scene. You have no source to prove those numbers, and they seem completely whacked to me.

Second, why the hell are you even here on TL when you have such a dim view on e-sports? Not only do you appear incredibly biased against the scene, but you're actually trying to convince us that this form of entertainment is dying?

Third, your preachy statement regarding how "staying in e-sports for the long haul is a bad idea" is another baseless "fact" you pulled out of your ass. Nobody knows where e-sports is going . Suffice to say, projections from actual business people (not random posters on TL) shows that the industry is expanding rapidly, with massive profits to be made. Do you really think companies like MLG, Riot, Blizzard etc would invest so heavily if they didn't see huge potential for growth? I'll trust the growing viewership and real businessmen over your spiel any day.

Fourth, when and if things turn out to be substantially more optimistic than your "analysis" of the scene, I have no doubt we'll see you posting on here saying that you "knew it all along". You just seem like that kind of forum poster.

Excellent decision by him and the smart choice, he knows whats coming over the next year in SC2 and staying in the scene is not worth the time v's money to be made. Idra knows too hence the reason he wants out of competitive Starcraft. Good luck to him and his studies

Sad to see players not having so much fun with sc2. You all say this havig to do with repeated rigorous training but it has nothing to do with it. The game is just too stressful and not pleasurable.
