Blizzard sponsoring eSports so that their own brand and title becomes even larger as a result? For basically pennies compared to their total annual revenue? I understand the amount of money Blizzard makes. I don't see their investments in eSports being profitable. I don't see SC2 ever becoming what LoL is in Korea right now. I just think that they need to pull something else out of the hat if they want SC2 to succeed. A real foreign league (not tournament, league) has never been done before. I dunno, just something, something to bring the eSports fandom further without dumping it where it's not really wanted.

Dear Blizzard,
please make the following happen:
- Some combination of Proleague and GSTL. - Some combination of GSL and OSL. - WCS
Broadcasted by both GOM and OGN. If these requests are not in the realm of possibilities I'll settle for world peace.
Thank you.

Potentially landmark news. While Blizzard has always supported their games, they've never openly made such a huge contribution directly to the growth of eSports. 1.8 million bucks is a RIDICULOUS amount of money. It should absolutely translate to professional sports-cast levels of broadcasting.

Oh no please, a foreigner league ? Average level, lot of bitching, players forfeiting left and right or showing up late. I would never pay a monthly fee for that.

<3 OP's effort here. Definitely have my fingers crossed for our first sc2-only international league. The MLGSL.

Not what happened, OGN interviewed Mike at MLG and they cut his message into that montage, and when it was pointed out that the message was super inappropriately placed the montage was edited to remove the most offensive parts. The montage shown at the finals isn't the same as the montage shown at the semifinals.

I feel like the reason we have a discussion forum with threads about different topics is that people can come and offer their opinions, even speculation, even if it contradicts or dissents from what other people are saying. In this case, we do know Blizzard's history in Korea hasn't been perfect, so there may be some stock to the idea that they are, like the owner of an exotic pet, messing with something they don't fully understand. That's not what he's saying and you know it. He's merely commenting on the fact that people are bitching about something they don't even know all of the facts about yet, which TeamLiquid does all the goddamned time, and how stupid it is. Which is a valid criticism. To say that he's trying to complain about differing opinions is to mischaracterize his legitimate point - that the opinions are misinformed and premature. No, I completely understood the idea that the opinions in this thread are premature or made with insufficient knowledge (because the announcement hasn't come yet and none of us is Mike Morhaime). But that applies to all sides, including people posting both in derision and in adulation of Blizzard's move here. Nevertheless, we have a thread on the topic, so it seems counterproductive to complain that some people are using it to talk about more than just going "oh sounds cool I can't wait for more info."

Without directly agreeing or disagreeing with what is going on here, and without immediately judging one party or the other for doing a good job, Korea has too much of everything. If Korea can become more focused then in theory that should be really good for our scene.

Blizzard is spending 2 million to show SC2 on OGN. Why? Proleague is doing well on its own and this move will only anger Kespa which owns more than half of the best players. I hope this GSL/OSL combination will be for the best. I really, really love watching Tastosis cast Code S games because of how awesome the games are and how hilarious they are as people.
I dislike change~~~ -.-
Hope its for the best!

Are you actually privileged with some knowledge of what this announcement actually is?

I liked the idea of a GSL and an OSL, both seperate but with a grand final between both competitions. Would be awesome for GSTL and PL as well.
I don't think this news will be bad. Gotta see though.

You think there's no bitching in Korea? If you just take the SlayerS drama, compare that to anything that's happened in the foreign scene. We don't hear about the day-to-day stuff because progamers make less public comments and we don't read Korean forums. Average level? Solved by money. Teams see money, they set up real practice environments, and those who don't take it seriously don't get money. Players forfeiting left and right? I said live. Slam it where there are domestic players, in the states or Sweden or wherever. If Blizzard wants eyes, why would they charge a monthly fee? Where was that in the conversation?

someone in this thread hit the nail on the head, people don't typically follow TV stations or esport associations. most of the time, they support their favourite player - regardless of where he's playing.
|
We already know the GSL is doing well.
How do you know this, do you know their yearly revenue and expenditure?
Expanding to a bigger new studio doesn't always mean they're outgrowing their current assets as the old saying goes "if it aint Broken, don't fix it" could always mean the entire opposite and its just a huge publicity thing.

Ah ok. So that's why Rain got the Code S seed due to his OSL Championship.
