Um, the OSL commentator showed how he was depressed recently on his twitter.
Gisado(GSL commentator) and the head-editor of TIG had a conversation like "People will be more surprised when the renaming comes out" when there was a such big trouble with the English client for the first day of GSTL.
Also, lots of fans in Korean are panicking because of the rumor that OSL is over. Okay, so if OSL and GSL employees don't like it, and the media-in-the-know doesn't like it, why would OGN and GSL go along with it? Why would whatever it is go ahead? Money only goes so far. Playing devils advocate, what if the new league is actually global with online qualifers going into regionals into global championship. What if OSL and GSL can see the business sense in it but maybe traditionalists or just their inner fan does not like the lack of control or perhaps lack of centralized Korean focus?
Basically WCS or WCG. Which is basically just Koreans stomping on foreigners until they meet each other
I don't really care about any league outside Korea so one unified international league would make me sad.

I guess I wasn't too far off in my musings a few days ago?

I guess we shall see what happens. If OSL really is canceled, that's also a big blow to Doa (who was looking forward to casting SC2 again in April). Either way, one cannot help but perk one's ears when there is talk of renaming and stuff.

I'm all good for the idea, blizzard needs to step up on this but it just doesn't feel right without an OSL in starcraft...
|
This sounds like OSL and GSL are merging...

$1.8M a year being invested in a league and all i see are people bitching about blizzard getting involved without even knowing what blizzard is doing. seems par for the course on the forums.
|
Lots of speculating going on right now, you would have to think that with the people involved they will do something for the better right? I'm hoping that they can keep airing SC2 on OGN...
|
It's fucking annoying to see something big come along and nothing but people taking whatever opportunity they can to air out their grievances with Blizzard or sc2. I thought most of you high post people didn't care about OSL/Proleague anymore because it isn't Brood War, at least according to everything I heard back from some familiar names here when the last BW OSL and Proleague happened. Wait for the announcement and details before you jump to foregone conclusions.
Whatever happens, I think that April 4th is going to be a big day for SC2 in Korea. Let's hope for the best.
edit: I just reread the OP. Jesus, 1.8 million a year? That is a HUGE investment into the Korean scene going forward, and that's just what they're STARTING with.
|
I dunno... is that really such a big news? It's just effectively OGN starting to broadcast the GSL, right...?
edit:

If you're not with me... then you're my enemy!

So Blizzard is hosting a premier tournament and GOM and OGN are just broadcasters of it instead of hosts of their own tournaments? It's kind of sad how 10 years of history was scrapped for 2 million dollars, but this is probably a load off for OGN since they don't have to struggle to look for sponsors anymore. I really liked the control that GOM had over their tournament as well because they were very quick to respond to feedback. It will be weird when they become just another broadcaster even though they're really damn good at that now.

There should be like a SC2 Korea Superbowl:
OSL vs GSL Champion!
PL vs GSTL Champion!

There's a reason people are skeptical when it comes to Blizzard's decisions regarding Korea.

nah people will always do something for their own good. If I understand this correctly, Blizzard essentially buy the OSL, and they already had the GSL as well (according to OP). However what they gonna do with the two leagues is largely unknown Meanwhile, GOM & OGN revert to a pure broadcast station only, one for the internet and one for the television.
the worst thing about this? A Blizzard starleague with a map pool full of ladder maps. Beat it

tldr: Blizz wants to be Riot

I feel like the reason we have a discussion forum with threads about different topics is that people can come and offer their opinions, even speculation, even if it contradicts or dissents from what other people are saying. In this case, we do know Blizzard's history in Korea hasn't been perfect, so there may be some stock to the idea that they are, like the owner of an exotic pet, messing with something they don't fully understand.

Don't really want to make much of a comment since it's not really the official announcement but rather a lot of rumour stuff (though its probably spot on). But:

Was instantly my first thought tbh.

I knew that LoL was demolishing SC2 in Korea but THIS bad...it's just sad. I can't see how this type of investment is sustainable for Blizzard, or how the scene can support the absolute wealth of progamers in Korea. I mean, 7 KeSPA teams and even more eSF teams? That's hundreds of progamers in a scene that really can't support it...

heres more whining than in a 2011 lr thread i dont like it stop brainlessly bashing blizzard
