IdrA, JYP, HerO, Grubby and Znow did cancel their participation.
Good question, it looks like 2 people advance from the first group stages(at least it's written at the top, but if it turns out you can be out of the tournament after one bo3 i will be angry.
This will an ok tournament I think. The line-up looks a bit thin but Im really excited to see Naniwa, Thorzain and Morrow. There seems to be a lot of Swedish players attending. Maybe well see some new and promising players..

So many never heard of players Well this is their chance to shine. Still I think this would've been better as 64p tournament (Because they didn't even get full 128 players and only like 80.)
Hopefully that list gets updated, eventhough it is like few days until first matches.

Hero and Grubby cancelled as well.
Brings it up to 86, still lacking 40+ players is quite sad. Will essentially be every single Swedish player, a few foreigners and a few Koreans.

This. Would have expected Europe based teams to field more players. Some more Germans at the very least.
now that naniwa is in the round of 8 I wish he'd lay low for a while and practice. I think he has a great chance of doing even better this season and I don't want anything to get in the way of that!
WTF Dreamhack? "Groups" of 2 or 3 single elimination ? This doesn't make sense at all, even if there is not the 128 players you can make less groups, no?
That's not profesionnal and fair at all i'm really disappointed. I hope Dreamhack will change that.

I feel like Dreamhack's prizepool is still way too topheavy so a lot of top teams didn't send their players and players canceled and their system just isn't good for 80 players instead of 128.
The first groupstage now has not a single exciting match, but drags on for almost the entire first day.
With the gaping holes in the player lineup DH will have to be extremely careful with the seeding once the group stages are over. 3-4 of the top players in one side of the bracket and suddenly there will be some issues
Top two advance from each group to the second group stage where there will be 16 groups. In the second group stage there will be to first place finishers from the first group stage, and two second place finishers from the first group stage. Same goes for the third group stage.
In the 2 person groups, it can be assumed matches are only played for seeding purposes into the second group stage.
The first group stage will obviously work as a seeding round for the next group stages. so even though there are only 2 players in a group, their matches matter all the same.
Seems half sweden are participating, which is kinda cool. I like the lineup. While there aren't that many Koreans, we've got tons of top EU names, so it'll be a blast for sure. :D Very low representation from the NA server though, which kinds of bugs me. Oh well.
LiquidZaki, I always thought liquidfans should use LiquidFan or something similiar as prefix ^^
I still wonder how the setup is the first day, like a regular dreamhack groupstage with computers scattered around the floor to be able to view progamers over their shoulders and any stands / seating to view the commentators for those who enjoy the specator?

As mentioned, probably a simple risk-reward kind of thing.

Yeah at this point it seems he just prefers the risk free money more - I can understand that 100 percent as afaik MLG pays the trip to NY while DH does not, so him without a team and a "steady income" from a team, which is probably way better than only money from twitch and some sponsors/streaming - it makes a lot of sense in his situation.
I also would have loved to see him compete, but oh well at least he will be awesome at casting.
On April 20 2012 21:51 Derez wrote: Highly disappointed by the line-up and the format to be honest. You can do better dreamhack.
Why? Lineup is understandable - although it's really not that bad - but multiple group stages into single-elimination bracket is the best format in my opinion.
The format is good, better than all those double elimintion brackets we see at MLG and IPL. It just doesn't work with 80 players, cause now the whole first day of a 2day tournament will be spend with boring matches. With 128 or 64 players this format would have been perfect. At least the 2nd day will be awesome I guess.
They really should not have invited all those noname swedes and cut it down to 64 players.
On April 20 2012 22:40 Champloo wrote: They really should not have invited all those noname swedes and cut it down to 64 players.
There never was any invites to noname swedes... Anyone that could pay in around 50$ could participate in the tournament so probably the reason why you find so many noname swedes.
The second day will be exciting but I understand if people will skip watching most of the first day.
DH really should have used a combination of invitations and an open qualifier instead of letting anyone signup directly into the final tournament. This way they would have an early indication of the number of accepted invitations and could adapt the total number of players by using online qualifiers (filling empty slots in the final tournament up to say 32 or 64 players).
I'll probably watch some of the first day anyway but that's only because I'm so hyped about actually going to DH for the second day

Looking at the schedule mlg barely coincides with this. You can probably watch dreamhack and then watch mlg afterwards without missing more then a few games.

There are some hidden talents in Sweden, for example SortOf who is in a group with Lalush is currently #2 on EU GM, yet he is not mentioned anyway on the most notable players
I think this will be a tournament with some nice upsets
I don't get all this hate for the player list. It's about 50% 'randomers' sure but that doesn't mean they wont show some good games and there is a good chance of a few upsets. TLO to win please? (I can dream right?)

If people are wondering about more swedish up&comers (or just not that known players) here's some names to look out for:

Pffff, Is that it? Couldn't they afford more? Such a letdown! J/k
Looks great, and although the first day might not be the most exciting one. This makes the chance higher for a upset. It would be funny if some of the high names got eliminated early on by a 'noname'
The true test on how good Dreamhack is how they deal with the first eight hours on day one. Looking at the first group phase, it looks bad, and by bad, I mean really, really bad. You have some groups with only two people and the big names who are actually in three player groups, are going up against players probably half their skill range. If Dreamhack can actually turn the first group phase, which looks very bleak, and makes it fun and tries to give chances to people who never in a million years would get main stage experience, it could be really good.
MLG Providence on the first day had the same problem (not as bad), but was able to make some of the games between the Koreans and diamond league foreigners pretty fun to watch with enthusiastic casting and not taking it as the most serious thing in the world.
On April 21 2012 01:08 BakedButters wrote: Wasn't there a fee to join this tournament? Maybe that accounts for the dissapointing number of notable sign-ups
$50 is nothing for a big name player. The problem is that DH doesn't pay for plane tickets and housing, which makes it difficult for teams to send a bunch of players. Cuts down costs, however, and gives home turf players a better shot.
