You live in a very different America than some of us do. More people have died of lynching in America than in 9/11. It's still very recent.

I am disappointed to read that one minor lapse in judgement has come back to haunt him. Anyone that speaks ill of Orb because of this is completely fooling themselves. Everyone makes mistakes, but only a few own up to them. It is too bad to see that EG decided to take the safe approach in deciding to let him go rather than take one for the team and fight for their own. I know, without a doubt there is a clear place for Orb in the StarCraft community involving casting. I do believe him to be one of the only people on the same level as Artosis. Nobody else contests his clear and crisp commentary. I don't condone what Orb did. It was clearly racist and it was undoubtedly wrong to say. But, I ask of everyone, in times of anger and weakness do you not lose control for that moment in time yourselves? Probably not every time you are angry and weak but there are definitely times. Orb, I speak on behalf of the believers and sensible people of our beloved community, you have been forgiven for your slip of the lip. We look forward to wherever you turn up next in the StarCraft community. -to the person ignorant enough to post such a thing on reddit, Grow up and take time to think about the possible outcome of your actions. There was no justice in this act, period. Sincerely, "A true Orb fan"

Other curse words are different than racial slurs. Saying 'shit' doesn't indicate that the person who said it might hate or harm people they've never met based on their race. Using a racial slur does, and if a person uses a racial slur simply as a curse word and then claims that they are not in fact racist, well then I'll believe them, they probably aren't racist, but they're definitely fucking stupid.

This word shouldn't even exist anymore. Problem is, both black and whites won't stop using it. The word was used as a racial slur for black people, so it makes perfect sense for it to be offense when a white person says. What it really comes down to, is standards. Orb used it to INTEND HARM, which is why (imo) there is a shitstorm

In that time, I was laddering so he could see more high-level strategies. I encountered orb on the ladder. After beating him in a long hard-fought macro game, I was barraged with a ton of different racial and sexual slurs that really hurt. He constantly used the word "nigger" and "faggot". My friend is of african-american descent. After seeing this, my friend turned to me and said "I don't want to play this game if this is what the starcraft community is like." He has not been on ever since that day. I know its not just orb and many people also react like this when they lose, but you need to think and know that there is another human being behind that computer screen and blindly calling them a "niggerfaggot" is hurtful and does not help at all. How many other people do you think have quit starcraft because of racial and sexual insults like this? For Starcraft to grow, we can't have people like orb being accepted and looked up to in the community. Especially not in a prominent position such as a caster on a famous team. Thanks for listening. I know this will most likely be buried underneath the many many posts that come to teamliquid, but if even one person spends the time reading this and understands, then I will be happy.

A very good caster, with good knowledge and great tempo Just made a big slip up on the professional level I think the key here is - if you fuckup or make a blunder on the professional stage - own up to it immediately, else you're thrown to the mob - YE BE WARNED

Offense is a largely subjective and meaningless measure for situations like this. it's about how our words/jokes lend to cultural narratives and strengthen implicit biases about marginalized groups. I've posted this like 5 times because I think it's really important and well argued: http://finenessandaccuracy.wordpress.com/2010/01/13/i-dont-care-if-youre-offended/ i don't really give a fuck who is offended or the context or whatever. that's not at all why this is happening. please try to think in a sophisticated way about things.

I don't want to be rude or seem like I don't understand, but if you become genuinely hurt by a random individual calling you names on the internet in a video game you have really lived a sheltered life and should probably grow some thicker skin. Your friend probably wouldn't want to play any multiplayer game in the world (past, present, or future) if he/she is offended by the language in starcraft, especially considering that the language filter is default set on. I've never played a multiplayer online game that didn't have the occasional person either throwing around racial slurs, swearing all game, raging, etc. I'd imagine the number of people who have quit playing starcraft from being bm'd is almost zero and the majority would quit from the frustration of losing rather than the bm after winning. These are the type of people who get teachers in shit for being a normal person in lecture hall or class room. Like someone mentioned before in the thread, I don't see ANYONE up in arms when someone calls someone else a retard even though the word is equally, if not more offensive because the intended victims often have no means of defending themselves.

Bleh, many would argue that it's you who is stuck with a primitive and idiotic perspective, myself included. Step into the modern world, friend. The word is offensive, sure, but not on the extremely damaging and horrifying level some of you people are making it out to be. Was it at one time? Yes, when the issue was more relevant. Is it now? Not even on the same level. All this is happening because people are taking it out of context and being offended.

Jesus Christ, how did you convince your friend to even leave his house to come visit, in today's world ? Give me a break. Either this is a made up bullshit anecdote, or your friend has a rude awakening to how the world truly is. I don't know whatever happened to 'sticks and stones', but apparently it's a thing of the past. You simply can't stop people from using particular language. Even EG didn't stop Orb from using this language, they simply cut ties so that language doesn't reflect upon them. I'm with Destiny on this. People can say whatever the hell they want and they are accountable. If people think you are racist for using particular language, then so be it. However, just as they can't stop you from using that language, you can't control what others think of you. If you are comfortable with your language, then by all means, feel free. Frankly, in this Country (the U.S.) today, people get accused of racism for how they cast votes or whether they support particular political issues, so it's kind of losing its bite. If somebody calls me a racist, I really don't give a shit. I don't respond with "I'm not racist and I challenge anyone to debate me on the matter." I simply realize you can't control what other people say or think. You can only determine whether you want to be associated with them.
