Okay, only USA and Europe would see MLG, for the rest of the world 20$ is quite expensive, but, who cares, after all, we are a minor comunity... i said so in the vVv podcast thread a while ago. this is so fucked up. countries with a bad currency are left out. im done with mlg even if they go free again. i have principles and what sundance wrote is the same, if not even worse, what politicians do before the votes. and i have no intentions of supporting this in any way. this is not my definition of esports. this is stealing others money with false promises.

Your argument would make a shitload more sense if instead of MLG you wrote Dreamhack or Assembly, they are community driven and born from lan events. MLG is like the Nestle trying to sell us milk powder when all we have to mix it with is pure PR bullshit.

He does it because if he would compare apples (eSports events with eSports events) with apples, MLG would not look well. What matters is that if you compare those 20 dollars with 0! dollars that other events charge, its an increase of an infinity times. So its not worth it compared to other SC2 events! Even when you compare it with GSL premium, its still not worth it! No thanks. When you compare it to other PPV shows: ITS not worth it! 170 dollars for 1 season of NBA vs 3 days of Sc2, with so much "mediocre" players? No thanks. In germany you pay roughly 50 dollars for 1 month PPV soccer, which includes German National league, English Premier league, German Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Euro League,....... compared to 20 dollars for a 3 days event? No thanks. Start comparing apples with apples please, and you will find out that THIS MLG price is just ridiculous. Thats wrong if youre doing it correctly you pay 26€ for 1 month PPV soccer, which includes German National league, English Premier league, German Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Euro League in HD quality.

Yeah, I'll get HD of the live championship, but I thought I paid for all events. This is what disappoints me the most as someone with a gold membership. I enjoy the product they put out so I supported them with money for a year long subscription. I feel like the value of the membership has decreased in value and am now a disappointed customer. I've promoted via twitter and when hanging out with my friends how much I enjoy IPL, MLG and GSL. I want to see all of the leagues become profitable and am certainly supportive of changing their business model to become more profitable. But I guess I don't see why you promote a year long membership and then a few months later noticeably decrease the value of that membership while upsetting a lot of paying customers in the process. I can only speak for myself and say that it felt pretty damn good turning off auto-renewal for gold membership after this announcement. A very, very small statement but meh, worth it as a response to today's announcement. Good luck to MLG.

Not like we don't have other tournaments to follow. This is actually a decent point most people don't bother bringing up. Problem with too few viewers to make money on adds? Stop running 8 tournaments of your own every year, on top of IPL IEM Homestory WCG Assembly ESWC, etc...especially because then you can actually make a tournament with all the details people actually want.

That said, it makes you wonder about their business model. If they weren't even sure about their source of income, why were they expanding the circuit and flying Koreans over?

Yes, the peak (unconfirmed) amount of viewers ever watching an SC2 only event is a good number to base estimates of advertising income on. The NFL was selling their online stream ads (3.1 mill viewers) for mid six figures, I don't think 240k viewers brings in that much cash.

IPL is not selfsustainable. IPL3 was probably the most expensive event to date. IPL doesn't get Venture Capital like MLG does. IPL gets IGN to pay their bills. These are just the facts. IPL is not an upstart. Their constant streams show that they are clawing their way back into a decent amount of income. There's a reason IPL4 hasn't been announced yet. The event itself would probably cost at least 2 million dollars.

For ad revenue? No, you need closer to a million.

what's going to be better for the stream: 5000+ people paying $20 to watch HD with no ads... or 40,000-80,000 watching free but generating ad revenue and the odd couple of thousand that will pay for the hd version anyway... i may be wrong (i often am) but i suspect this will be seen to be a rather embarassing mistake after the figures come in.

Shit, MLG can't even get people to pay to view their content. Do you think that really looks good for sponsors? Razer comes here and sees everyone whining about money or how they don't have money -- then probably thinks that even if people do see their ads, no ones going to buy shit. And, let's face it, if you've paid to watch the stream, you already know about whatever's going to be advertised most likely. THey aren't going to make enough new customers, really.

i think pure ppv is a bad idea considering the vast majority of gamers are still at ages where they don't have solid income myself included.
