Who the fuck would be disappointed with this ? This is the absolute best tournament outside of GSL, and 20$ for a whole weekend in HD... worth it.

Fuck ASUS ROG, it doesn't even compete.
Gold-level random player, with a tiny bit of preference for Protoss. ;D

20$? Okay, only USA and Europe would see MLG, for the rest of the world 20$ is quite expensive, but, who cares, after all, we are a minor comunity...

i said so in the vVv podcast thread a while ago. this is so fucked up. countries with a bad currency are left out. im done with mlg even if they go free again. i have principles and what sundance wrote is the same, if not even worse, what politicians do before the votes. and i have no intentions of supporting this in any way. this is not my definition of esports. this is stealing others money with false promises.

Your argument would make a shitload more sense if instead of MLG you wrote Dreamhack or Assembly, they are community driven and born from lan events. MLG is like the Nestle trying to sell us milk powder when all we have to mix it with is pure PR bullshit.

I hope the best for eSports and it might be a bit ironic to say this, but I sort of hope they really flop in terms of viewer numbers. I want it to be out that organizers like MLG can make more money with advertisers by keeping events free to watch than by taking a fraction of those people and getting them to pay.

Its so funny how people compare apples to oranges. Even Sundance does it in the OP. He does it because if he would compare apples (eSports events with eSports events) with apples, MLG would not look well.

What matters is that if you compare those 20 dollars with 0! dollars that other events charge, its an increase of an infinity times. So its not worth it compared to other SC2 events! Even when you compare it with GSL premium, its still not worth it!
No thanks.
When you compare it to other PPV shows: ITS not worth it! 170 dollars for 1 season of NBA vs 3 days of Sc2, with so much "mediocre" players?
No thanks.
In germany you pay roughly 50 dollars for 1 month PPV soccer, which includes German National league, English Premier league, German Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Euro League,....... compared to 20 dollars for a 3 days event?
No thanks.

Start comparing apples with apples please, and you will find out that THIS MLG price is just ridiculous.

Thats wrong if youre doing it correctly you pay 26€ for 1 month PPV soccer, which includes German National league, English Premier league, German Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Euro League in HD quality.

It's just too much money, plus I don't like my current MLG membership becoming all but useless. Yeah, I'll get HD of the live championship, but I thought I paid for all events.

This is what disappoints me the most as someone with a gold membership. I enjoy the product they put out so I supported them with money for a year long subscription. I feel like the value of the membership has decreased in value and am now a disappointed customer.

I've promoted via twitter and when hanging out with my friends how much I enjoy IPL, MLG and GSL. I want to see all of the leagues become profitable and am certainly supportive of changing their business model to become more profitable. But I guess I don't see why you promote a year long membership and then a few months later noticeably decrease the value of that membership while upsetting a lot of paying customers in the process.

I can only speak for myself and say that it felt pretty damn good turning off auto-renewal for gold membership after this announcement. A very, very small statement but meh, worth it as a response to today's announcement.

Good luck to MLG.

No wonder they had to lay off/fire so many employees, I suppose they had to brace for the massive financial arrow they are about to take to the knee for this. i don't think MLG was ever profitable. SC2 will always be a niche no matter what we keep telling ourselves, and the cost of broadcasting worldwide, renting and staffing venues, flying players to events should dwarf the income they made off of SC2.

I like this post.

John Clark @csn_johnclark
@MLGSundance Its possible that your statement about your investment will fall on deaf ears. Most do not have a clue of the costs to orgs..

James Lampkin @Kennigit
To give a better picture of online ad serving, The NFL was selling their online stream ads (3.1 mill viewers) for mid six figures.

Sundance DiGiovanni @MLGSundance
Again. You're awesome as a community but there aren't enough of you for advertising to be enough. That's the truth.

Just a few tidbits from Twitter.

Concerning Sundance's tweet, in my opinion if that is true then mlg won't be putting on sc2 tournaments much longer, Plexa said earlier in the thread that there may be an over saturation of tournaments and if MLG bites it then that's just how it will be. Not like we don't have other tournaments to follow.

This is actually a decent point most people don't bother bringing up.

Problem with too few viewers to make money on adds?

Stop running 8 tournaments of your own every year, on top of IPL IEM Homestory WCG Assembly ESWC, etc...especially because then you can actually make a tournament with all the details people actually want.

Why cant they just offer like a $5 HD live pass or something but no vods or extras im sure that would generate alot more revenue when they have both offers.

People are definitely feeling over-entitled. From what people have been saying this seems like a survival move for MLG more than anything.

That said, it makes you wonder about their business model. If they weren't even sure about their source of income, why were they expanding the circuit and flying Koreans over?

Yes, the peak (unconfirmed) amount of viewers ever watching an SC2 only event is a good number to base estimates of advertising income on. The NFL was selling their online stream ads (3.1 mill viewers) for mid six figures, I don't think 240k viewers brings in that much cash.

What a fucking joke, considering all the negative feedback that was brought up in the other thread talking about PPV,,, Like I said $11.99 for 3 months of MLG silver pass was a decent deal, they canned the HQ for who knows what. Now they are charging $20 for a weekend? LOL!

Boycotting MLG from now on

There are multiple reasons why I won't pay but one of them being I feel like those that invested into a gold membership are totally getting ripped off. Kinda feel bad for those that supported the company by paying 40 bucks but cannot even get this first event available to them, where's the logic behind that? Sounds like a bad business plan that hurts alot of the current viewership and popularity making it alot less enjoyable for those watching it.

MLG is a big business with many sponsorships, multiple games available to them to make tournament money off of, and have merchandise, silver/gold memberships, and other respectable assets that generate them cash. My point being if you're gonna pay the 20 bucks to, ''support esports'', you aren't actually doing so. In fact, MLG is being quite ridiculous to not atleast bump the prize pool alittle more. I don't care if they pay 100k for the players travel costs, that's nothing compared to the amount of money they collect from just one championship event.

So you think MLG is just rolling in money? Are you kidding me? You know it costs money to run events. Prize pool is only a small amount compared to the operating costs.

Yes they do

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/news/mlg-secures-10-million-in-series-a-financing-from-ritchie-capital-to-build-worlds-first-professional-video-game-league

You're clearly an idiot. They wouldn't be in this business if they weren't making a buttload of cash on it. I love how people look at MLG as if it's an nasl or an ipl. This is not an upstart.

You're the idiot here. Venture Capital is not income. You don't make a profit from venture capital.

Plus, the only upstart here is the NASL. IPL has Newscorp and IGN backing it.

Thank you. Its hilarious that people think Rupert Murdoch signed off on the IPL because he 'loves' e-sports. The sc2 community is getting worse by the day.

IPL is not selfsustainable. IPL3 was probably the most expensive event to date. IPL doesn't get Venture Capital like MLG does. IPL gets IGN to pay their bills. These are just the facts. IPL is not an upstart. Their constant streams show that they are clawing their way back into a decent amount of income. There's a reason IPL4 hasn't been announced yet. The event itself would probably cost at least 2 million dollars.

For ad revenue? No, you need closer to a million.

It seems somewhat unrealistic. Dont think mlg realise how many viewers aren't fanatics. the new wave of people watching sc2 and lol for that matter are mostly made up of casuals that dont even play the game..

what's going to be better for the stream:

5000+ people paying $20 to watch HD with no ads...

or 40,000-80,000 watching free but generating ad revenue and the odd couple of thousand that will pay for the hd version anyway...

i may be wrong (i often am) but i suspect this will be seen to be a rather embarassing mistake after the figures come in.

Shit, MLG can't even get people to pay to view their content. Do you think that really looks good for sponsors? Razer comes here and sees everyone whining about money or how they don't have money -- then probably thinks that even if people do see their ads, no ones going to buy shit. And, let's face it, if you've paid to watch the stream, you already know about whatever's going to be advertised most likely. THey aren't going to make enough new customers, really.

Also, when comparing to Homestory Cup, who sold their premium stream a lot cheaper, AND had a free stream to support the HD streams, didnt they make a profit out of it? HSC is very comparable to the winter arena, since the tournament set up (not necessarily the format itself) is similiar.

i won't be paying due to the fact i don't get the same feel as "live" when viewing vods which is what i'd have to do being in europe.

i think pure ppv is a bad idea considering the vast majority of gamers are still at ages where they don't have solid income myself included.
