i don't think MLG was ever profitable. SC2 will always be a niche no matter what we keep telling ourselves, and the cost of broadcasting worldwide, renting and staffing venues, flying players to events should dwarf the income they made off of SC2.

I like this post.

James Lampkin @Kennigit
To give a better picture of online ad serving, The NFL was selling their online stream ads (3.1 mill viewers) for mid six figures.

Sundance DiGiovanni @MLGSundance
Again. You're awesome as a community but there aren't enough of you for advertising to be enough. That's the truth.

Just a few tidbits from Twitter.

Concerning Sundance's tweet, in my opinion if that is true then mlg won't be putting on sc2 tournaments much longer, Plexa said earlier in the thread that there may be an over saturation of tournaments and if MLG bites it then that's just how it will be. Not like we don't have other tournaments to follow.

It's not awful, it's Supply and Demand. They are taking all the good storylines/Amazing players, and the people with the money to watch it will, at a fair price.

I myself am not going to buy this.

Not because I think $20 is too much money, but because I hope PPV is not the future of 'esports'.

I hope that the future of esports is more of a mix or free and premium content.

Instead of making this event PPV, I'd suggest making this event AND the online qualifiers a mix of free and premium content. (ie During the qualifiers making the HD paid)

Also I think PPV gives nothing the to growth of esports.

I don't have anything against PPV, but I feel like GSL + teamleague is better value and is practically every single day.

Hmmm, true, I tuned into a LoL stream by mistake once and was shocked at the 200k people there.

I feel like if you are like me and don't have great bandwidth (the best quality i can handle is 360p and if the stream is not great it has to be 240p) the value just isn't there. If you can receive streams in HD then I have to say that this is worth it. However I feel that MLG should have announced this from the start something about announcing it after you have had your qualifiers streamed for free seems sort of dirty.

I don't ever see myself paying 20$ for a two day event. Typically, I watch it on the background. However, with friends coming over and watching it or something, I can see that happening. Maybe MLG doing this may encourage friends to watch it together rather than watching at a computer by yourself.

There goes the illusion of the supposed starcraft 2 esports scene. Once companies start to monetize, viewers will run away--largely because of the spoiled audience that is too used to free content. No corporations have made significant profits on esports, and seeing this trend, none will.

If Blizzard wasn't so cheap and taking 50% of the streaming income then the price would be 10$ according to my calculations...

I support esports, but i do not support bad business decisions by MLG.

forcing people to pay for something that once was free is retarded, plain and simple.

this move will hurt MLGs bottom line and they will regret ever doing it
In theory, practice and theory are the same. In practice, they are not

Doubtful, MLG have made it pretty clear just how much of a boost starcraft gave to MLG, even if he says there isnt enough for us to make it proftiable ad wise, I imagine its sure as shit better than what it was before, much like blizzcon last year inc omparison to years before.

To everyone talking about how GSL is cheaper, how is that korean sc2 scene? They are really thriving over there aren't they? I mean, those players are making a ton of money. And GOM is just rich as hell. I heard that Mr. Chae wipes his ass with $100 bills.

Oh wait, you mean the korean scene is incredibly small, players don't get salaries, teams need more sponsorship and are making deals with foreign teams to get money? And they can only play in tournaments outside of GSL if their trip gets paid for?

So GOMs format isn't really growing the scene much is it?

Definitely not enough to be self-sustainable. They're not making money. At worst they're losing it.
