But anyone saying Assembly's lineup this weeknd is of 'equal caliber' is nothing less than delusional.

Criticism is allowed. Undue flaming is not. Take a second to think your post through before you submit. Bans will be handed out. Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either.

But that basically leaves me to the point where I'm paying $20 to watch the semi's and the finals... which is definitely not worth it in my opinion.

Hahahahaha. If 20$ was needed to "break even" then they must expect low turnout. If we assume that twitch takes $5 of those $20, that's $150k for 10k people that convert to pay (which is really high). That barely covers the travel cost to get the players out (which I think they should perhaps not have done to this degree) plus prize money. I don't think they can bank on sponsor revenue for this since the number of viewers can be expected to be this low. In addition to that, they have about 10 casters and hosts there, probably at least 5 production people. A 100mbit connection is probably around $2.5k a month. Plus equipment cost, rent, other staff, catering etc. My guess is that they need at least around 20k paying viewers to make any money on this. I would be surprised if they come anywhere close to this. Personally I think the price is too high and they are shooting themselves in the foot with a too high of a cost structure but it is what it is. Enjoying the show a lot anyways.

Assembly has a monster lineup of the best the EU has to offer with a couple of upper-end Koreans and that's it. That still makes for one hell of a tourney but please try and really tell me MLG isn't blowing the lineup out of the water. If Assembly didn't have Stephano there wouldn't even be a contest here.

Say they were only able to bring in 4k of ad revenue from ad views. They only have to sell 200 tickets to essentially get that. Any more = more success than showing ads. And THEN, in one week, when the VODs are released, they will capture the rest of the audience that would have watched. The VODs will have ads, and they will make another 4k. They are essentially double dipping their revenue.

I am still irritated how the biggest non-mlg events topped out at around 80k though - that's a huge difference.

I got banned and then unbanned a minute later because it was a joke URL to a non-existant domain. Mod got a little trigger happy with things but we patched up. Unless he was trying to ban me for the Demulsim thing.....

Lol good for them (no sarcasm intended) i can see this event turning out better then expected because it is the first ppv event ever for sc,and it got alot of (FREE) publicity here on tl and other forums. lets see how this goes a few events down the road in say 9 months from now, i still dont think the sc fanbase is wealthy enough to pay 20$ to watch a weekend tournament on a regular basis If they have made a huge profit they better keep it a secret though as due to your spin doctors on the forums the community seems to think that ppv was needed to safe esports, not realy to make a few guys a huge profit. annyway congratz to mlg, you opened a new road for wich we should aplaud you, lets just hope that its not a death end road (sry i cant be 100% positive about this)

If you want to make profit and advertisement is not enough, you should consider to generate extra content, e.g. interviews/talks/show-matches which are only availble to paying viewers. To pay for the most basic aspect, the gameplay, is just bad ethics and puts MLG in the league of EA's ME3. That makes no sense at all. It is somehow morally wrong for MLG to switch to PPV now? I see this kind of post a lot: you want free content and aren't willing to pay up for it (or maybe you are, and are bitter about it), and try to legitimise your complaint by claiming it's wrong for a) the "scene" and b) morality. Chances are, that's not the real reason you are complaining. You are complaining because for all this time, it was easy to just watch high quality SC2 content for free, and now you are having to dip into your wallet.
