You are sooo so right!

Assembly for me very disappointing MLG

I really liked what InControl said at ITG - this is especially a problem for us with a Gold pass. I bought a gold pass at end of last year, and were expecting to not pay more for MLG this year (and I won't). I just feel kind of betrayed by them introducing a new event where I have to pay again.
Well, I won't be renewing my gold pass either, I guess. I prefer giving my money to GSL.

I wonder if they're just testing the market here - seeing whether PPV is a feasible way to go

Someone's pockets are getting bigger and as per usual it's not the players that in reality are what makes these companies to start off with. Do you understand how much money it takes to fly players in from Korea and Europe, and have them stay for 3nights at least in NEW YORK CITY? Their 100k estimate seems reasonable to me. If they didnt pay for any player and made the player pay, the prize pool could be 100k, maybe thats a better move? But it would be a huge risk to players/teams to pay 3k+ to fly in stay for 4 days, and not win anything. It does kind of beg the question why, when they're having no live audience anyway, they're bringing those 32 players to one of the most expensive cities in the world. And for everyone complaining about people wanting stuff for free, can we please acknowledge that there's a pretty big gap between free and $20 for one weekend?
Do you know how much more expensive it would be to rent a place where there's enough room to have people/spectators there? Having spectators will easily double the price. And I'm pretty sure it costs somewhere in the 6 digits to rent a place in NYC that's as big as the previous MLG venues.

well i understand that the whole esports thing needs some money buy 20$ is abit too much 10$ i would pay 20$ no
for roughly 25$ i get a whole month of paytv with sports and free movies, 4weekends of soccer + more

What other tournament organization, other than GSL, has more actualy live tournaments than MLG per year?

Sigh.... I enjoy watching sc2 and have tuned in for some games at pretty much every event. $20 is expensive and it should be less, but I wouldn't have a problem paying for something I support at a reasonable price. Which is e-sports growing in north America. IMO should have season/yearly passes and the option to purchae single events. The fact is MLG can't sustain free. And if the Sc community isn't willing too pay they will move on too LoL. That community will have no problem forking over cash too watch CLG vs TSM etc... The NA scene wanted Sc here in North America and MLG delivered more than I expected by bringing in big names event after event. They did all this and gave it away for free. Now it's time too pay up and help expand e-sports or watch it die a fad.

Nice work MLG, will definitely pay $20 for this. Looking forward to it. <3

I believe that a weekend of MLG is worth 20$ but I don't think they should ask for that much right now. Here is my reasoning:
Pro: - awesome players - awesome casters - awesome production - awesome streem quality - decent prizepool
Contra: - competiton still has free steams - from 0$ to 20$ is to much of a jump - main target group are students (school/college) and don't have a lot of money - so it might scare away too many viewers - and thus hurt sponsorship and growth of community/viewership
Suggestions: - make it ~10$ for now AND - wait for competition to catch up - see how much it hurts your stream numbers - offer a (very) poor quality free stream OR - offer a low quality stream for ~5$ AND - offer to upgrade to HD easily and quickly
I personally like ESL's model where you get everything in low quality for free, single events in HD for 5€ or subscribe for ~3€ a month to get all events and shows in HD. While I do believe that it is too cheap and the free stream is still a little too good, I like the general idea alot. I have subscribed to ESL to get the good quality and I get a lot of shows (especially since I am German) but I also have purchased aditional HD-passes for things like the Homestory Cups to show my support for such awesome events.
I feel that MLG offers some of the best content in eSports right now and they deserve our money but there is still too much competition out there that offeres (sometimes slightly) less well produced shows for free. What I have noticed in the SC2 community is that a lot of people are willing to give money/support to players, leagues and sponsors but we dislike it when we feel we are being forced to give anything.
Wow... this got much longer than I expected and I could probably go on comparing MLG to all the other leagues but I think I have said enough for now.
PS: sorry for any bad spelling/english but I am german ^^

IMO MLG should offer a full refund to Gold members. Even if they're charging them extra on a technicality it wasn't clear at all to the members.
|
I am not a gold member myself but I understand where you are coming from. I'm hoping this all gets settled without a negative impact on esports.

Exactly..
I already paid the freaking $30 for the gold membership and they want me to pay more? No thanks.. watching mlg isn't that important, I'll just stick to playing the game I guess.

Anyone ever figure out why no live audience? Seems like a good way to monetize they are just jettisoning all of a sudden. SC and it's stars being low key and approachable is one of the good things it has going and why HSC is kind-of a hit. Why would you throw that in the garbage?
I don't want to pass judgement on Mr. Sundance's business acumen but I sure as hell would have a live audience as it even increases at home excitement when you hear fans cheering not to mention gate receipts...
