Well, I just prefer playing teamgames or custom/fun maps. Don't know exactly why, but 1on1 is just not that much fun for me.
When StarCraft 2 comes out, I played lots of rounds in the ladder - but after a time I switched more other modes (and games).
1on1 is for me quite stressful, even I know it is just a mind thing. Will see if this changes in the future again.

I started getting into gaming around 6 years ago, like most people here I got into starcraft 2 by World of Warcraft, I made alot of friends during thouse 6 years and I still talk to them a lot , they are always doing stuff together either on WoW, LoL or any other game that you can play together, when i found out Sc2 I told them about it and they all bought it, they didnt seem to find the enjoyment in it and they arent really competetive players I even told them about how big the esports scene is etc but they still didnt get the drive to start playing it competetivly , but I did I wanted to become a pro player so I've been playing this game for around a year now and I got very high masters but at some point when i spend almost nearly ever day on it I still didnt get one achievement what so ever , I've been playing this game with more stress then I actually enjoy playing it, which is was most people have I think the aim to be a proffesional player instead of actually having fun with the game. that's what killed me so I went to start playing lol again and can just have ALOT of fun with all my old mates and still be the one that actually is the competetive one.

TL:DR People want to become a proffesional player but on the way there they just aim for that one goal instead of having fun on the way to there.

Sorry for my bad english TT

In most other games one plays in order to achive improvement of the virtual Avatar. In SC2 one plays in order to achive improvement of him/herself. In addition every game starts with same presets and no benefit to either side due to gear-benefits. If players cant appreciate these facts, SC2 has almost nothing to offer. Except the tough ladder-competition and social isolation due Battle.net 2.0 of course ^^
The chair slowly turns around. You see his face, but it can't be. He's not supposed to be here. Not him. Not a Protoss. Not THAT Protoss. MC says, "Hi Greg, long time no see." You back slowly out of the booth. But you can't. It's already forcefielded.

I tryed so hard to be good at the game, and then just find that this game is sooooooooooooooooooo incredibly fun to watch if you aren't good and i'd rather watch than play.

my irl friends dont want to play more and improve in the 1v1 aspect of this game, it is disheartening, they instead spend most of their time diddling with Hero Attack. I tell them to play LoL instead, but they don't listen, le sigh~~

Moved on to other games, mainly LoL. Still follow tourneys like gsl , mlg and stuff though. Ever since I reached masters in all the way back in season 1 I just never had the motivation to try to reach masters again. I will occasionally ladder once in awhile but LoL spoils me by being a lot less demanding on mechanics. After you lose a 30 minute+ ladder matchup , you just don't feel queuing up anymore.

I think you have to consider how the game is played and how the game is promoted and built around. SC2 is built around the online component of the game while it strongly promotes the competitive scene, putting GSL and MLG ads along with ads for other tournaments as well, so while SC2 gives a single player campaign and such, the game is built more around it's online play along with the vast number of people who follow the competitive gaming scene.

Secondly you have to look at the type of game Starcraft is, unlike games like Call of Duty or Halo or even Battlefield, games that are built more around it's single player components but also have a very large following for it's online play, those games are made to be easy for anyone who is interested in playing the game. For casual play at least, those games don't require much "skill" to play I guess you can say, meaning compared to games like Starcraft 2 that require you to have supreme multitasking and logical thinking to play and win against better players, games like Call of Duty don't require much thought to play and progress in. Yes, there are outside factors such as school, work, or even new games that come out, but the main reason imo is that Starcraft in general is a much more difficult game to play, even when playing lower level ladder play when you're completely new to playing Starcraft or RTS games in general.

I have been laddering less and less.

Here are a few of the reasons that I think may have caused this for myself:
- ladder stress
- poor interface
- bad manners on the ladder
- no shared replays (I really don't see why they can't put this in)
- the protoss race seems underpowered (statistically proven) and I find it discouraging to play with an uneven playing ground (call it whining but it's how I feel)

There are probably others that don't come to mind at this exact moment but these are most of the major ones for me.

For me it's bnet that kills this game. Once you'v reached your maximum skill and realized your going no further the game has to keep you entertained with a group of players "clan" to keep it relevant and interesting. Warcraft 3 was soooooo great for this.

+ I really dislike the point system for places in the league on the ladder. The matchmaker is great, and I think the divisions are great too, gold, platinum etc etc
but I am sitting in place number 1 on all of my divisions, yet I know I am not skillfull enough to be promoted into the next category .

If the points within the division had some logic I would find a sense of achievement sitting at the top. As it is, they mean nothing and I am stuck with no up's or down's in every aspect of the game.
At least the warcraft system kept me fighting not to lose levels.
I will keep going for promotion but its a long term nerdy goal that most normal people wouldn't bother with.

in my case it's mainyl because of these things:

-it takes really to much time, you can't play for a week and when you come back you feel rusty.
-a good 70% of the games are odds allins or lame shit that really bothers me
-it's really stressfull and unforgiving when you make a little mistake and you throw away a 40 game minute
-clan ( or ex clan mates ) stressing me for results and searching for me if i wont play ( it's a community-for fun-clan )
-continuos nerf to terran ( yes i play them )
-strange blizzard attitude to his battle net service ( i have been playing dota 2 for some time now and even if it's in beta they have shared replay, automatic tournaments, coaching, and so on. blizzard really? )

too bad. i'm a HUGE starcraft fan ( been playing it since the beginning of the beta, bought 2 limited editions and have my room filled with starcraft posters ), but these things are really game breaking for me

I still play it.. just that my comp cannot take it ATM. Gets hot and lags really quickly. Waiting for a change. Skipping Season 6 and be returning hopefully at 7. And the pop dwindles cuz some people cant take it I guess..

The reason I don't play much anymore?

SC2 has the same problem I've always had with Blizz's RTS's... You have to train on a very regular basis or else you will degrade in skills very quickly.. If you are not able to play for a week it's almost like starting over and it's going to take dedication just to get to the point you used to be at before.

I would love to go back to playing SC2 reguarly, but if I play I feel like I'm doing bad, and I'm not ready to dedicate myself to the game enough to get to that point again. It will happen again, but I'm not sure when... probably HotS.

I stopped ladder a few weeks ago, just because i play more custom now to get better.
As soon as i feel that i improved a bit, i'll ladder again.

Practicing in custom games is soo much more efficient.

Most of my games on ladder are 1-2 base all-in and I got bored defending it or got frustrated losing to it.

I play custom sometimes, but for the most part I just watch or play something else.

I play less because I'm awful, at times refuse to realise it properly and blame it on "ridiculous strategies". If I had an easier time realising it, I'd probs play more. Season 4 I played like 400 games, Season 5 only 200. :/

Takes too much time, and I had to make some sort of effort to get into Masters, so I just quit.

I think 1v1 ladder is dying because casuals(diamond and lower got bored eventually) and masters/gms train in customs with eachother on maps that are played on clanwars/tournaments/lans. Nobody trains on arid plateu sorry blizzard.

I play a lot less now mainly because of the people I meet on ladder, not because they're bad mannered or anything but because 90% of games is a one-base all-in or a cheese and I just find that boring. It used to be that I'd feel pumped after holding one off but now, win or lose I just think "ehh", its killing my enjoyment of the game.
