I've just tried it and it's really outstanding! I played SC1 as a kid and it's awesome to play it again on SC2 engine. You did great job here!
I'm also wondering, would it be possible for you to add a few custom skirmish maps to play with SC1 units?

There was a remake of the first Enslavers campaign using our mod in 2011, but the mod has changed a lot and it is no longer playable. I may give it a lift once 2.0 is out.

I don't believe Insurrection and Retribution are going to happen: we don't have the games, the plot has no influence on the rest of the Starcraft universe, it is not voice acted and it isn't that good anyway. Plus it would take ages to make given the number of maps. The most reasonnable expansion would be Enslavers Dark Vegeance, but between my job and my social life, it's not something I could realistically get involved into as I did with the core campaigns.

I actually have a few thoughts I'd like to bring up - I know you're working on that writeup, and some of this may well be covered in that. If it is, awesome, if not, it's just a few extra things I'm curious about.

What sort of stuff can we expect in the way of more custom models? I know there are plans to bring in all the new resources from the Heart of the Swarm - one personal hope I'm holding onto is use of the Hyperion model to replace the normal Battlecruiser, as it's closer to what the old Battlecruisers looked like. SC2's Battlecruisers are actually a different type of ship; Minotaur-class Battlecruisers as opposed to Brood War's Behemoth-class, which is the type of ship Hyperion is.

But more to the point on the end of models, I know there are a lot of custom models out there, things like custom-made building addons, like the Control Tower, and a Machine Shop. One person I believe is working with you pointed out a de-infested Stukov unit model and portrait, and I've seen a particularly impressive unit model for Raynor's vulture that has the Marshal symbol (the one available as a decal through leveling up) on it where the decal would be, not as a texture, but as an actually raised sculpted part of the model. Are there plans to include any of these types of works? I'd love to see Duke with a custom portrait instead of the generic Battlecruiser pilot.

Another thing I wanted to mention; I brought up a point similar to this before, earlier in the topic, on the note of certain heroes. Through observation, I've seen that a number of heroes either move, or attack faster than their base counterparts. Raynor as a Vulture, the Hyperion, Fenix as a Dragoon, and Kerrigan as a Ghost are heroes I remember having a faster attack speed than normal. Raynor on a Bike, and Fenix on foot also move faster than the normal versions (I don't remember if Dragoon Fenix moves faster or not). Worth noting about these two however, is that their moving faster than normal is not simply a case of already benefiting from their base unit's speed upgrade. If said upgrade is purchased, Fenix and Raynor proceed to move *even faster*! Is this something you plan to duplicate, or is this being left out for whatever reason? I know there were plans to make an adjustment to Raynor in some form, and I pointed out an issue with the Hyperion's attack pattern as it appears in Episode 3 (look for my posts earlier in the topic about that), but I believe I noted that already appeared to be changed with the Brood War mod.

One final note I wanted to bring to the table; the issue of talking animations for portraits. Now, the audio files in the game all seem to have specifically-programmed lip-flaps to go with them, and they don't seem to be specific to any one model that I can tell. Which means, conventional logic means proper talking animations for Brood War's dialogue should be impossible, or at least mind-numbingly difficult. However, I saw a mod made some fair while ago that hand-waved this by applying some sort of generic lip-flaps when dialogue was playing. I don't know how much of what sort of effort this took to accomplish, but is it something you've already, or might consider looking into for future updates?

Still loving this though, and eagerly await news and release of the HotS update! Keep at it guys, you rule!

All right, it's been delayed due to pesky inconveniences such as having a job, but I have finally managed to piece together a first preview of what is in store in Mass Recall HotS edition. Let's skip directly to the list:


  • Heart of the Swarm models and icons
    [image loading]
    Devourer, Queen, Guardian and sunken colonies are visible.

  • New custom models
    [image loading]
    Control Tower, Machine Shop, Dropship and Raynor (vulture). The hydralisk in the middle is a Blizzard HotS model used as our new Hunter Killer.

  • Three new missions from hidden or deleted Blizzard content on various support: Biting the Bullet, Operation Silent Scream, and ResurrectionIV!

  • Talking portraits for all Terran characters.

  • In-game units lore from the original manual.

  • Complete rework of Episode 3: The Fall

    [image loading]

  • Three difficulty levels for all episodes. The current Easier will become Medium, the current harder will become Hard, and a new Easy difficulty will be added. Further balancing may be done after release depending on player feedback.

  • And lots of other improvements to the AI, terrain, etc...

This is by far the largest update we've ever made, everything listed here will come with the HotS edition. There are more features that would have been interesting enough to be listed here, but I'm not sure it will be ready for the next update so I'll talk about it when we have made enough progress.
Expected release date is around Christmas, with the inevitable bug-fixing patch shortly afterwards.

Very nice! Was *NOT* expecting the talking animations or the hidden/deleted levels! Can't wait!

Also, as for the heroes attacking faster, go load up Brood War and see for yourself - the only one I'm uncertain of is Ghost Kerrigan, the others I know for a fact attack faster; Raynor's Vulture and Fenix's Dragoon.

The Goliath (and the vulture) is already using the Starcraft 1 voice, but I don't know if they plan on adding the rest of the Starcraft 1 voices or not. They actually have the classic "Battlecruiser Operational", but the Starcraft 2 voice for the rest of the Battlecruiser.

The Terran prequel was made by someone else in 2011 and is available on the Arcade. I think "Precursors" brings it up.

I tested that when you first mentionned it, the results were included in version 4.7 of the mod. Fenix dragoon Raynor vulture and Raynor battlecruisers were the only three I found.

We only add SC1 voices when we clearly feel the SC2 voices are lacking or when there is no equivalent. The first reason is that I found most of SC2 voices to be superior to their SC1 counterparts with the distinct Attack and Help sounds, the second is that sounds take a lot of disk space. Our mod is about 150Mo large, adding all sounds would easily double the size and further increase the maps loading time, which on some computers is already in minutes.

One question.

Have you added highlighting to portraits when their text is "typing" and they're talking at the moment?

I mean Overmind talks right now, and his portrait is highlighted with brighter border or something like that. Or just add character names into the dialogue texts?

Erm, while we're here, I'm playing through these again for the lulz, and I just got to Episode 2, map 8 - stopping the Dark Templar from escaping.

I beat the level, but at the end of the final cutscene, with Kerrigan in plain view killing off the remaining buildings, I got a message that she was dead, and a defeat screen. I mean, I'm just gonna move on to the next level of course, but it was odd. Any idea what might've caused that?
