Im very curious as to how much money in total has been given to documentaries about the sc scene.. ive yet to see one. is there anything thats even close to finished? Well, we started prepping a year ago and haven't finished filming, so I don't know that anybody else has either (several of the other films had longer shooting schedules than we do even). The problem with doc films is that they just take time to do them right. I do admit we've got a Kickstarter going, though I didn't link to it in the TL post because there are other avenues for that, and TL isn't about asking for cash. So I don't want this thread to be about that. Because we just finished a new trailer for the film, I'm also doing more publicity and telling people about the project and so the timing coincided. I do think it's also worth saying that I'm not asking the SC2 community to put up the entire funding for the project, or even to completely fund the Kickstarter campaign. The campaign goal is for a portion of our budget, and as I type this I'm also working on spreading the word to other groups I belong to like professional organizations and all of that fun stuff. I'm not just posting to reddit and begging them. I'm equal opportunity begging ; ) All that being said, I don't want my TL thread to be about the funding. I'm going to follow the rules of this forum, and like I said, there are other places to have that conversation. This should be about the fans and the film.

(Please tell me name of that other one ^^) That's Star Nation, which is being made by a great crew. We've talked with the director, Justin, and their producer Andrew at MLG events. The films are superficially similar, in that they are feature length documentaries about Starcraft 2. But like I said, we've talked a lot about our projects and we're focused in on different things. I don't want to speak for them, but I feel like they'll be different movies, maybe even work in a very complimentary way. I feel that if somebody sees my film and wants to know more about pro gaming in general, I can direct them to Star Nation. If somebody sees theirs and wants to get into more detail about the business and organizational aspects of the teams and find out how that works, they can watch my film.

Just tell them to pay for the hole shabang. ![]() Looks great so far. ![]() EG is very supportive of the film, but we've talked about this and chose together not to go this route for various reasons. The biggest one for me is that I don't want any appearance of conflict of interest. I don't doubt that if EG helped with the funding that they would still allow me to retain editorial control. But it wouldn't necessarily appear that way to others.

My favorite e-sport documentary so far was the one that they did about Mike Ross for G4. In-depth, shows you the true personality of the player, and the world he lives in.

Who knows what is going to happen by mid-2012? The whole landscape of the game or team can be on it's head by the time it finally is released. Unless the documentary is revolving around someone who can clearly stay at the top of the game for a good 8 months, the documentary becomes dated and potentially less tangible to the current.

I think that's something that nearly every documentary faces, and it's certainly something that's on our minds as we work. But the thing about film is that we aim to capture a moment and tell a story, and we rely on the news and the fabulous esports journalists to be bringing up to the minute coverage. One of the things we love about Starcraft and have talked about with the players is how fast the whole game can change, so that's something that's actually part of what we're looking at and exploring.
