There is another annoying bug in 1.4
when i want to inject larva with my queen i use the inejct larva button... then i see that i cant inect atm and want to quit the inject ordner, by pressign ESC... it just doenst work...
same thing is when i click on attack... i want to cancle the attack by pressing esc... it doenst work.. wtf is this shit?
same problems for you?
You could always press h or s? And i wouldn't know i never use esc.
thank god i don't play zerg normally.. this would be really annoying. Everytime i play zerg I do the exact same thing as the OP. I srsly. hope that blizzard doesn't call the original function a "bug"..
you use esc to get rid of the screen and deselct, for example you press b instead of v for building/advanced building, going back to the build menu
I just hotkey out of it but I can see why its kind of useful
dw you can just re-assign to the escape button
will this change using escape to cancel unit/upgrade training? because i do that all the time if i pressed the wrong key or i want to cancel a building.
Oh man, that's annoying. I usually run into the same problem with feedback or graviton beam. Even when using escape, accidentally clicking something that cannot be gravitonned or feedbacked is annoying as hell...
Same here, I use ESC a lot : cancel units in production / larvae, and the other things the OP just stated.
Does anyone has a solution to get back everything pre 1.4 on this front ?
Oh no, just as I was getting to like this patch. I reflexively hit esc to cancel anything. If attack move is messed up this is going to really screw me over.
ESC is the hotkey for cancel. Orders such as move, inject larva, and attack cannot be cancelled, they have to be stopped (press S). The action typically needs to have a time for it to be cancelable, such as production of a building or unit, or a few [rare] abilities.

Fine, but if the queen is walking towards the hatchery to inject, it should be cancellable. And no, remapping stop action to the escape key is not a solution as that would require you to hit escape to stop moving, stop attacking, etc.

(just imagine how often player who did this before will now press escape 2-3 times, wonder why nothing happens and then press s, which basically means loosing a lot of time)
I think you can bind an alternate key for stop in the hotkey menu, so you have S and ESC to stop.

What else to do? If you misslick on "b" instead of "v".
Why did they have to change this ? What was the usecase scenario where the "old" ESC function was a problem...?
WHAT that was one hell of a terrible 'fix'
Why would you press ESC when you just can press stop?
Same thing goes for warping in units as protoss. If I select my warpgate hotkey and then select a stalker for example but then I change my mind, I can't escape out. Seems like I am stuck warping in a stalker no matter what! This is definitely no good.
Well, what op describes i just do with the "Stop" button (standardkeys: s) and i guess cancelling buildings/unit queues etc isnt affected by that change
Move whole hand to push escape, or simply reissue orders (right click) or push S for stop. hmm...
Escape still cancels buildings, upgrades, units, etc. You'll get used to using something else to undo commands, might take a game or two. I don't see the issue tbh.

I always pressed Esc (didn't know you could press stop, thanks TL!) and did some ladder games today and cancelled stuff without any problem, I was playing Zerg and cancelled evolution chambers and spine crawlers.

Does anyone know whether ESC will still close a chat input box in-game, I use it for that all the time.

If one is used to press a key in a certain situation one would like to be able to do that after the patch without learning everything new.
this "fix" must be reverted asap

Why don't you read the message I responded to? He said "seems like I am stuck warping in a stalker no matter what!" so I suggested another way to do it.

Right click is the right way and so much faster, thank Blizzard for improving your mechanics
I believe most of you don't realize what he means, he's referring to when you have the mouse cursor already changed to do whatever action he was about to do and wants to get rid of it
say he wants to build an extractor but realises, he has already taken both, now his extractor is locked to his mouse and he wants to cancel this via ESC, which is what i do, too. am i right, OP?

This is honestly not a huge deal - you'll get used to it and in a week or two your muscle memory will be reset and you won't even remember that this was an issue. I don't know why they made the change, though, since I can't imagine a situation in which it's actually a problem.
If it's such a big deal, though, just remap your escape key. If I understand the patch notes correctly, the escape key itself can't be mapped any more if you use grid layout, but you can just remap the key to another symbol in the keyboard software and then map that symbol to cancel.
Such a stupid change. Before, it was the same button for all types of cancel (building, production, spells etc) and now it's right click for half of them. Right click is less intuitive anyway since right click is normally used for giving orders not cancelling them.
y u no work ESC key?! lol I kept pressing esc in the two games I just played. Well at least now I know that nothing is broken.
I love this change. Pressing esc t cancel injects is a bad habit I've ahd for ages and it's been causing me to cancel my lair upgrade sooooo many times. Good times Blizzard.
why would you hit esc for canceling an inject command? Just right click your queen it only requires your mouse...
Í didn't even know you could do that.
I always used move command. Well, you can probably report this to the Bug report Forum on Bnet

Uhmmm... what about phoenix and graviton beam? I really liked esc because it meant you don't have to individually select the graviton-ing phoenix to get away quick if you needed to....

That's exactly the thing. It simply doesn't make sense to make two different cancel/stop keys for different kinds of actions or processes to cancel. It's like if they made it so that marines, marauders and vikings could be a+clicked, but you had to click the attack icon + click target for all other units. Quite a nonsensical change and it can't imagine why it was needed in the first place.

no its understandable, since canceling graviton beam with s would be quiet deadly, just how canceling an inject with esc can be quiet deadly. Not really needed imo, if people want to do it bad let them.

PEOPLE READ THE PATCH NOTES BEFORE REPORTING A BUG !
whilst i don't agree with the CHANGE of removing esc. Read the damn notes please.

I don't understand why you would want to move your hand all that way to cancel something when you can do it easier without even moving your hand... This isn't even an issue.
as far as i know this "bug fix" only changes the behaviour with things that change the cursor to this kinda "cross" like drop, inject, chronoboost, etc. but you can cancel those things by right-clicking anywhere. so you can still cancel upgrades and all those things with the esc button.

You can also just hit "enter" again without having anything typed in.

EDIT: sorry for double post, can't seem to find the edit button on the iphone, so i ran up to my computer to excuse the double post :D

I don't understand why you would want to move your hand all that way to cancel something when you can do it easier without even moving your hand... For one, I can hit Esc on the keyboard without looking away from the screen, while I'd probably need to check where to put my finger if I had to press Z to cancel Graviton (I play in Grid on an Azerty keyobard). I suppose I could get used to it just like I can press T or W without looking at the keyboard, but currently I'd rather use Esc.

Lol wat?
You already use T and W for most everything else anyway, especially if you are using the grid setup. You can hit any key without looking away from the screen if you practice it enough, so I don't see how using ESR was helpful. Anyway...how could using ESC be useful for anyone using grid?
ESC is a key that's all alone, there's no other keys around it and therefore it's super easy to hit. I do missclick often and suck. As a gold zerg, who uses grid layout my most pressed buttons are T for attack (accidentall R for patrol), ESC for cancel and Y for various updates and injects (accidental SHIFT or X). B is just not in a usual finger movement path, and therefore the chance for me to accidentally hit space is very high, which is disastrous at all times. A button to cancel anything and all action that does not have nearby super large keys which would jank me away from the current position is super useful.
You should all be using right click anyways so it's 10x quicker, so thank blizzard for improving your game...
So you use right click to cancel buildings, upgrades and morphing units? Works super fast?
Press "s". That's what the key is for.

This will sound dickish, but you should probably learn to type so that this is no longer an issue for you. Not only will it help you with SC2, but it'll help you with... typing.
If you need to look at your keyboard to type, then you don't know how to type. My keys don't even have lettering on them.

To cancel buildings/units/upgrades you still can hit escape. If you want to cancel a COMMAND, such as larvae inject, you werent supposed to be able to use escape, and I dont honestly know why you would ever get used to that (I never even knew you could use escape to stop that... how did you guys figure out that you could?)... hopefully it doesnt effect you much and you can just get used to right clicking/hitting s/hitting h.
