I wonder if this is a result of the eg/puma drama? Perhaps the Korean teams are just afraid of losing their best players. I really hope this isn't the case though, as it would be an overreaction.
....unless Taeja suddenly parachutes into the studio with explosions behind him and lands on a skateboard which he jumps over the booth before jumping in. If that happened it would be so sweet it would be physically impossible for them to lose. - Haydin

People wanting the foreign scene to get better need to still tune in and even buy a streaming pass. If it's any indication of the Korean team budgets that they can't afford to travel, even the premier teams, it might allow more foreign teams to snipe some of the better korean players. As esports gets more and more like a business in the US there is potential for more and more money. The players will follow the money. More team houses are popping up in the US, more resources are being dumped into the teams and the training regime is catching up.

this might be the start of better foreign teams.

I imagine Koreans have a different underlying motivation for this move, I can't begin to guess what it is though. It's a shame, I can't say I've been a fan of NASL for the most part of season 1 but the final event ended on quite a high note and this season would probably have been better.

At least it's a tournament I imagine most foreign players will be happy about -_- 100k in prizes and no GSL stars standing in the way.

I think a lot of people are missing that they agreed to NASL's terms up front, and then asked for changes to them at the last minute.

Any discussion about how good those initial terms were seems beside the point to me. If they had signed a normal business contract, NASL would be well within their rights to sue the pants off these guys.

Could you imagine what would happen if the NFL players union got together and suddenly said "we're not playing unless you do X. We don't care what we already agreed to."

Can someone from NASL answer this? The contract part is what I wanna know. Enforce the damn contract. From a business perspective, I would try to make them hold their end of the bargain. It is only fair... and the law?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I can almost guarantee you that most of the players would GLADLY take the offer of 2000 dollars, but as they are bound to this stupid contract they can't do anything about it unless the committee allows them...

it's quite strange, because when nasl first announced korean players would be playing in season 1, I was a skeptic, becuase this was considered to be a "wester starleague", after months of conflict, i finally got myself to accept the fact that nasl 2 will have a bunch of koreans, and now this happens. how are we going to qualify players to replace the koreans. also, in the future, what are you guys going to do about slayers players, they are not apart of sc2 con, will they be allowed to play in nasl?

few things i wanna say.

i think Koreans are making a poor choice here. they are struggling for sponsorships and money but it sad that they don't realize that western exposure of there players will help them get some great new western sponsors. imo bad decision for koreans to get western exposure.

next thing is everyone needs to relax. the foreigners are still capable of putting on really good matches. look at eu blizzcon invitational. look at TB's shoutcraft. great games can still be had with or without Koreans.

I guess everyone has their problems. I mean i understand that koreans nor nasl (or foreign esports) is made of money, but on the other hand it feels wrong that money gets in the way of just having a way to play/watch the game with the best in the world.

That said, i will be buying a season 2 ticket. gl nasl, we still love you.

Edit: @the same player pool thing. Think of it as more drama, say idra knocks out kiwi in ipl, but they're in the same grouo for nasl. :o. Draaamaaaaaaaa
OKAY FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE I SEE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

man, NASL is going to suffer big time.

65000 watched the bnet EU invitational...

It got boosted only because of WoW fans.

Well, considering there was barely any WoW at all I find this hard to believe. Sure, there was WoW fans, but do they really account for such a large portion of 65k that there were very few people actually there to see SC2? No, doesn't make any sense.

Also, saying the EU scene is "low level" is silly.

Then just look at dreamhack instead... It wasn't stacked iwth koreans and still had insane viewer numbers.

tbh good for the Koreans for sticking to their guns.

Has anyone here auctally tried to caculate the cost of a 1 week trip to cali from seoul and back. its damn expensive. Being almost 3k with hotel and airfare and such. For the chance at $500, which would still lose them $500 if NASL paid 2k.

I can understand why the teams would do this tbh. They are not in a healthy state in Korea and of course they would want people to pay, since they can't temselves.

I can answer this question. We paid for Korean players to come to NASL Season 1. We bought tickets for MC, PuMa, Zenio, and Squirtle. We paid $1,192 for each ticket. The hotel cost was $353 for the entire event. Travel cost was about $80 per person (shuttle service to and from). This averages out about $1650, factoring in meals ($50 per day even) ... giving each player $2,000 should cover that.

Then why not just say to them "we're covering your entire costs," instead of putting a limit on it. Thats rather dumb.

you tell the Koreans that you'll cover 2k. they say to you they want you to cover it all. Well if 2k will cover it then tell them that you'll cover it all.

seems like really poor thinking on NASL's part.

What if they request business class, or first class? There has to be a limit, otherwise the demands will go unchecked.

So your saying the Koreans wanted champagne and caviar on the plane?

Why not just arrage it yourself. Tell the teams you will have everything ready and will book the flight etc for them.

I highly doubt they will demans business class or first class on the plane. Nor run up the hotel bill on kimchi.

We already set the precedent for this in Season 1. We bought tickets for MC, Zenio, PuMa, Squirtle with the deal that we'd subtract it from their prize money. We actually lost money on Zenio because he lost in the first round. We have already proven our determination in making sure Koreans make it to the event.

Does Nasl stick to their new system of paying 2k or go back to the old one with 500 dollar travel/ accommodation?

All pros want to be paid to play. There's not much of a point in being a pro otherwise.

As a fan, I want to see the highest level SC2 that my money can buy, and Im not buying a pass for the purpose of 'supporting e-sports' and never actually watch a VOD or anything like that. NASL just got a whole less attractive.

I don't really know how to view this personally. I've been watching SC2 for awhile now. MLG, GSL, IPL, NASL, Dreamhack, basically anything available I have watched and I love the game so much.

To me reading this post it almost seems like Korea has a view of "you need us, we don't need you". Which I can understand, GSL is very successful but the foreign side of SC2 is growing so large there should be a strong will to branch out. I understand the Korean scene has it's reasons but to me it just seems like a selfish decision in the long run.

The success of Korean players in NASL season 1 was fantastic and the fan base loved it (maybe not EVERYONE, but most). This just seems like such a harsh cold shoulder to E-sports. It needs to grow and branch out, not turtle itself into 1 section of the world. We have foreign players moving into GSL to improve themselves and some players show just such great promise.

I'll still be watching NASL regardless as I feel it will only do great things for E-Sports but I really wish the Korean scene would reconsider their decision and help make SC2 grow even larger. It can go far on it's own but it can go even father if we work together to put on some of the greatest matches people have seen (ThorZaIN vs MC in TSL3 comes to mind). Oh and let's not forget about the NASL finals with that major comeback from MC, granted that was two Koreans but it was within a foreign tournament which is a great thing.

To be blunt, my initial reaction is this is a selfish move... but it won't question my views on anything. In reality this just opens the doors for some more foreign players to maybe show their face on the scene and make a name for themselves. All we can do is hope.

We should wait for the Korean responses before making negative comments about the players and the association.

And really to the guys that said GSL feels threatened by NASL? I mean they are not really comparable and frankly the Koreans saved the NASL.

Ok, so...

1) If Koreans would compete in NASL 2, they would win A LOT of money + attract more viewers

2)???

3) PROFIT!!!

It's a win win situation for both parties.

I DO NOT understand Koreans at all...

like i said:

That's why i hope the Koreans will stay closed on themselves, just like in SC1.
They are just too exotic to us to understand WTF do they want...
Let them play in their own playground, so we can have the REAL e-sports!

hopefully this is not the end for koreans and nasl, and nasl and sc2con can continue to negotiate as season 3 starts.

Only 2 koreans are coming besides the invites. And Rain is on a foreigner team.

3 koreans that we know of so far: DRG, choya and thebest

Yea, I did forget about the open bracket, but even then choya and thebest are on FXO which apparently can do whatever the hell it wants.
