I really like the twitter idea.

Your site seems really simple and effective. I'm sure I'll be using your service in the future.
|
I like the simple design to the site and the easy form of uploading the replay files (drag and drop). Seems efficient and works well. Nice site!
|
Wow man, I'm really digging it. Clean, simple, easy to use, great features, etc.
|
Nice site! I never knew that web pages could have drag + drop functionality in that way.

Yeah its really cool ! I hope it will get popular !

wow. the site is amazing. would be pretty cool if we had an option to make an acc on it so that we could save replays to it and have something like drop.sc/Flaunt link people to my profile with all the replays saved ;o
|
This is by far the best replay sharing site I've seen. One feature request however: a way to sort by popularity (number of downloads) in the current week/month/year/all time.
It's really nice to see what people are looking at.
|
top 10 only? that seems pretty small, it should be top 200 from blizzards ladder rankings. Also the yellow writing is very annoying, use a different color. sure I could high light it, but some clarity would be nice.
|
Haha I though the first few posts were being sarcastic at first then I saw the video. That's pretty cool.
|
Wow really amazing site! I just dropped 4 replays in to test it out and they popped right up on the front page ^^. Quick and easy, and the layout is so simple and streamlined. Also being able to read player chat is really nice; was just browsing and read the chat log of avilo vs lalush.... and wow, I don't really know why people hate on avilo so much,
|
Looks easy and simple. No fuss, no mess.
|
I may have accidently uploaded like 4 pages of replays by accident ("You can drag and drop from desktop? Really? Sick let me test this out... whoops I accidently copied them all -_-;;") because I'm an idiot, so sorry about that.
But, this site is amazing! It's my second favourite replay site (after www.replayfu.com just because it looks nicer).
|
wow this looks really sweet.... amazing method of getting replays uploaded
|
looks really good dude,
the twitter thing is a fantastic idea
|
while its cool that this site is different and has some cool features, its still just another replay site for me =/ so many of them atm
|
I like the Twitter idea, very unique!
|
this site is awesome. very useful thanks a lot
|
Awesssssssssomeeee!! Thanks so much, fuck BNet 0.5 for not having built-in replay sharing, and thank you for making the easiest-looking replay sharing site I've seen yet ^^.

the site is down for me atm :/
it sounds really good though, i'll check it out

wow.. so positive comments.. didn't expect this.. love u guys <3
I apologize for the site not being available this morning. The uploader of this replay may be proud -- we uncovered a nasty bug using it! Thank you.
Just released a new version that hopefully covers some of the shortcomings mentioned here.

It's nice not to require users to register, but I do see your points and agree. I've changed the "Your replays" link to be shareable. Just copy and paste that link (for example http://drop.sc/users/3/replays) and they'll see all of the user's *public* replays. You'll have to manually share private replays with the access key tho. Let me know what you think!

It's really nice to see what people are looking at. Oh yeah, totally. Check http://drop.sc/popular/. Does that work for you?

So it's enough for the players to be ranked in top 10 *within* their own division. It includes top N*10 players, where N is the number of master divisions. So #14 and #6 won't get promoted, #5 and #9 will. Does this make any sense?
That hurts my eyes too! Not sure how I missed that one. I've dampen down the colors, let me know if your eyes still hurt. Here's an example of the new yellow http://drop.sc/191

Very good use of HTML5. Amazing!
|
|
awesome that the site is so dynamic!
|
|
Wow it's really simple, tidy and organised o.O I can dig it
|
love the minimalist design to it, makes it feel quite unique. If I could offer a suggestion, if I were to go to drop.sc and want to find a replay it would be very helpful to have a few filters to filter 1v1s, 2v2s (etc...), the 6 race matchups, and perhaps an identifier if this was a tourney game or bnet in the replay box (and if part of a set, which game).
Props on the HTML 5 coding too, I hardly think this makes it 'just' another site.
|
Wowowowow really easy to use and find replays. Really impressed that it finds the game information!! I mean APM, yes!!! Also cool how it tells names, races, and maps without having to input when you upload.
|
awesome awesome interface.... this is my new replay upload site!!! Thanks!
|
Nice! Very easy to use. I'll be using this from now on.
|
This is really great man! I'm tired of having to waste time with the annoying websites just to get a simple replay to a friend.
|
This is pretty good. It's very fast to upload a replay.
Great work!
|
Great site, super quick and easy, people should start using it
|
Wow, that' sactually super cool! I'm very impressed
|
First of all , Good job man! Drag & Drop feature is cool but the general style and design feels raw instead of minimalistic. I'm afraid bigger replay sites will steal the drag&drop idea before you improve your sites look&feel. And if even one other big replay site does that , you're pretty much done. My 2 cents...
|
|
I love this! Just adjust the way the homepage replays are displayed (so much wasted space per each replay display) and perhaps some other UI adjustments, it would be perfect. I love the drag and drop feature.
EDIT: How are the names in the "Players" list determined? I saw Artosis' name there but there doesn't seem to be any replays of him. Just wondering.
|
Totally digging it. This is a fantastic site with fantastic features. Keep up the good work =]
|
I like your site. Especially, the Twitter feature is very useful. However, I have one suggestion to you: Minimalistic don not have to look ugly. Add a decent Background, use different colours etc. (Keep it simple, though!)
|
|
Damn that's a nice site ! Well done :D
|
Love the minimalistic approach.
Possibility to upload a series would bee cool tho. bo3 bo5 bo7 etc
|
How does the site keep track of your replays when there is no account tied to them? Cookies? Tied to your IP??
|
On March 10 2011 18:10 Nalesnik wrote: How does the site keep track of your replays when there is no account tied to them? Cookies? Tied to your IP??
I was wondering the same thing, pretty sure it works by cookies because when I click "Your Replays" in a different browser, nothing comes up. I suppose you could always do a search to find your replays.
|
Sounds very good, but how does the private sharing work? How does the homepage recognize "me" without having me register? Cookie stuff? ^^ Also great with the twitter stuff, hope some good players start contributing on your new site Edit: Haha, seems like other IT guys had the same questions, it's probably cookies ^^ IP makes no sense?
|
Whoa, this is so awesome. Love this!
|
The functionality in the video was impressiv. After testing it the hype ended. None of my tested browsers (Opera, IE8 and Firefox) supports that kind of drop. Also the search and filter functionality of other site are way better.

Although I agree on search&filter , I'm pretty sure nearly all browsers last versions supports HTML5. For example , it also doesn't work on my Opera 10.6 but it probably works on Opera 11 ( not tested tho ) , it also doesn't work on IE8 but probably does on IE9 etc. ( works on FF 3.6 btw )

This is awesome. Works like a charm in Firefox 3.6. Very fast and easy to use.

Strange. I use Opera 11.01 So it should work. But when I drag a replay the drop message don't show up and on drop I get the download message (for the file i just dropped) I'm at work so i just downloaded one and droped it. I try it at home with my one reps... Firefox is 3.5 and is update itself.
Thanks for the infos doods!
Edit: FF3.6 works. BUT When i uploaded it. And i want to move or delete the replay from MY pc, i get a message says, that Firefox is using this file and i can't delete it. WTF?
Just found a bug: When I select a player and click on the "X public games found" it does not show the replays from the player. Instead the last replay will be shown.
However, the drp functionality is a very nice idea. Thanks for your work!

PS. ScCalendar looks really cool! You should definitely think about making a web interface for the aggregator! Could there be any chance of integrating drop.sc into it somehow? Perhaps display results from the Twitter feed?

Tested with the latest versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer 7/8. Mac OS X and Windows are both supported. Ah ok, the reason I'm asking is cause if you clear your cache, then obviously, you lose track of your replays. I like the "No Registration" concept and understand what you were going for (quick and easy replay sharing) but I think adding an option to create an account to better manage your replays for the "hardcore" people is a good idea, and for the "softcore" people, they still have the option for a quick upload. Do you have any plans to include accounts?
|
Thank you so much. It was very inconvenient to upload the replays via Mediafire or any other One-Click-Hoster.
|
Actually the best replay site in terms of use that I've seen.
Improve the presentation a bit and add a rating system.
Definitely add a rating system.

Design is a real pain in the ass for developers eh ? But well , you really can't be successful without a good design and UI these days , sad but true.
I don't know much about other replay sites but I know there are a lot of them and I'm sure some of them ( especially the big ones ) will be really interested in drag&drop idea. But I saw a few guys posting drop.sc links on irc yesterday , so yea you're doing good for now I guess
Thanks for your kind words on ScC , I'm also planing to release next version in a few hours today ( also we had a twitter but wasn't public , also gonna announce that as it's a good idea ). I have plans for web stuff for a loooong time but my 2 hands cant code that much at the same time I'm already working on 2-3 different projects and they are all coming up nicely but sloooow
drop.sc integration would be awesome but also close to impossible right now. I'm working on some new things tho , so we may able to do that in future ( a month i guess , or two ). Try to take over & dominate replay business till then please
Keep up the good work !

Hey, awesome Site.
Quick Idea: If you show the APM Graph, can you calculate the average APM for the whole game? That would be nice!

Nice! Simplicity is always good.

Very cool site indeed. Good work.
|
Awesome site, I love the simplistic layout!
|
This seems like an excellent way for people like me to quickly upload and link people to a replay in chat channels and things like that. I'll definitely use it.
No registration/login and drag and drop is sooo nice. I have been using Dropbox for that purpose, but this is simply better.
|
This is a wonderful idea. I like how you can just drop it in and very easy and accessible.
|
I've got a treat for you guys. Just pushed an update that enables to upload replay packs. This is an experimental feature, so please report any bugs and/or improvement ideas.
Whenever a ZIP, 7z or TAR archive containing replays is uploaded, it's converted to a replay pack. Here's an example of how a replay pack looks like.
Huge thanks to Janook at Reddit for originally suggesting this idea.
|
Another server machine acquired to balance the additional load coming from replay packs. The site should be faster and more stable now.
|
would be cool if the twitter feed included races
awesome site, thanks

Hi
Great site, here is some feedback:
There is an option for searching player which lists all the replays from the player.
So for example I am interested in replays from player X and searching for X.
1. Maybe you could add an option for "download all in a zip/rar file"
2. Make an option so that players can upload replay packs (I know that you can highlight many replays and upload them). The difference with this option from "download all" is that i might not be interested in replays from earlier versions of the game, hence I don't want to do a "download all in zip file".
Maybe you could solve this by adding game version to the replay info and let us search for latest game version replays if that is possible?!
Great site overall!
|

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! 1. Unfortunately this would put quite a strain on the server, so I'm not sure if this is feasible to do.

Sure, I'll add build version. Thanks.

This is basically a "perfect" site. Simple, clean, efficient.

Nice site! I like the simple form of the design but Id still prefer the textures and colors to be jazzed up a bit, as in new background and such.
And why cant I search for zerg games?

Cool that you generate an URL like that, thats definetely great!
But, that means that players that do upload the replay packs needs to give me that URL, correct?
I was more thinking that i go to search option for example: http://drop.sc/packs
And the search amongst the "packs" for "Trump" and then I see all the packs that Trump have uploaded and in one of the columns I can sort/filter on game version so that I only download the latest game version replay packs.
But adding the game version to a column and just searching for a player name will give the exact functionality i was trying to describe so just add the game version so that we can search for the latest one and then by searching player + latest game version is going to be just like searching for a "replay pack".
TL DR: Ignore the wall of text, add the game version number and let us search for player name + latest game version and this site is definetely my goto site for getting replays

Unfortunately, unless I'm mistaken, RAR is propriety (would need to pay for a licence). You can use ZIP, 7z or TAR.

Aww, heart warming.. especially because I've never considered myself to be good at design. Your positive feedback is what keeps me improving drop.sc. Thank you all of you!

Definitely will be checking this site out more when I get home, looks like you've set yourself apart from a lot of other replay sites.
as for the background, I like the original better. It's lighter which makes it seem cleaner. At least in my opinion. The other one wouldn't be bad, but if I had the choice I'd definitely prefer the original.

I like the suggested one a lot more. It makes everything more clear to see since it's a darker contrast than the white background used for replays.

Amazingly done, has the apple simplicity without the price.

Ah nice, that is exactly what i meant, the average APM for all matches of the player is even better.
BUT i think you could add it to the APM Tab aswell, imo the mouseover in the overall tab is a kind of awkward spot, maybe you could add the Mouseover to the APM Tab too, or just put it there directly.
Thanks for the quick reaction! Having good support makes a great webpage even greater! Keep up the good work!

One more thing i noticed: If you are in the detailed View of a Match and hover over the left players name, the copy button is "over" the tooltip. See here: http://imgur.com/Jm6Xo
Happens in Chrome and IE8, so i guess its a general Problem.
(Somewhere in the back of my mind i can remember that this is an issue with Flash, if it is a generell problem you might want to reposition the tooltip somehow

Definitely the best site imo for sharing your personal replays with friends and stuff :D awesome job man, thanks!
|
OoO cool stuff.
Main page could be flashier though, like, showing the map and other visuals (race icons) next to the replays (where theres an empty space)
then again, that could be the style you want and im just not use to it :p
the ez sharing will be handy in the future..

Yeah, noticed that too. It's flash.
Maybe show the tooltip below the player names? I kind of like the current position of things, the download button (being the most important) is first and then comes everything else.
Anyways, thanks for confirming the problem.

I'm paying everything from my own pocket. The initial costs were around 300$. The site is less than a month old and the bill for this month hasn't arrived yet, so I don't know yet. Thank you for your interest.

A thing I look for in every replay site is rating. As in, everyone logged in can give replays a 1-5 star and then the ability to sort by it.

Nice site, what do you think about these ideas: 1. Search function for two players, if I want to find 'Idra vs Huk' games for example 2. 5 replays per page is too little. What about 10 or 20?

Zdarova!
Both are good ideas, I'll see what I can do. The search definitely needs more options like different match ups etc. Spassibo!

I would like to share this special moment not only because Boxer just advanced in TSL but also because 15000 users were reached by drop.sc yesterday. This is huge because the site has been operational under a month.
Teamliquid.net, without doubt, has been the reason for the massive growth. Even Google Analytics is showing a 4000% growth rate.
I'm also proud to say that we had the first visitor from Korea!
So big thank you for the great feedback and support you have given. I just love you guys.
|
I'm really loving the simplicity and concept.
I would like if there were an "advanced search" feature, though. So that one could search for more than one player at a time (xyz vs abc) and certain maps.
I also love that you let us filter out old builds. I hate accidentally downloading old replays from other sites.
Good job!
|
I really like this authentication model. Only one suggestion: maybe you could add an option to send the private key to email address.

Great site, love the replay pack support. Janook gives thumbs up.

Nicely done. Suggestion though, when listing replays (like the homepage), add a little more spacing between each character. When you have 4v4, such as "DeadmauS P Thoreson RZ DildoseR P NOLIFE P vs Ape T blynd Z Wendigo P Connekted P" it's a little hard to tell which is which at a glance.

@SovSov,
Oh, yeah.. something like this is needed, I agree. For now, PM me the link to the replay(s) and I'll remove them manually.
To tell you the truth, I wouldn't worry too much about that.. The new default front page shows the popular replays.

drop.sc is now integrated with Sc2gears.
It is now possible to upload your replays to drop.sc with SC2Gears. You can upload anonymously or optionally set your private key as username and it will remember your uploads on the website as usual.
If you are interested in uploading replays privately using SC2Gears, let us know, as it is very easy to add such functionality.
Happy uploading!

I just tried with the newest Opera (11.11) on Mac OS X and it's not working. Unfortunately, if you really want to use the drag&drop functionality, then I cannot offer a better solution than to use Chrome, Firefox or Safari. That is, until we discover the problem with Opera.

I wonder why this isn't as popular as you'd figure. I think it's the best replay service out there.
I have a couple suggestions though.
Can you make it so you can see more replays in a reppack at a time?
Can you make it sortable by date?

- Increased the amount of replays shown in replay pack per page from 15 to 25 - Player profile page links now to SC2 Ranks profile page

Not necessarily replay packs, all replays. Although packs only would be fine.

Also, just to make your life difficult, could you say how many replays are contained in each replay pack @ http://drop.sc/packs (by far the least useful of the suggestions ^^)

Replay pack uploading is currently broken. Working on it.
|
This update is so huge that I'd like to call it drop.sc v2
TLDR: Introduced passworded user accounts, buffed the user interface, added new filtering and search options and player search now autocompletes with suggestions.
Private key accounts, post-mortem
Why did drop.sc decide to change the user system? The old one was like magic: every new user that hadn't visited drop.sc before became a new user automatically. When they left the site and came back, the site remembered their uploads.
The problem with the private key based user system is that it fundamentally breaks the expectations of the users. Everyone understands passworded accounts. So the private key system caused confusion and it wasn't intuitive for most of the users.
While it works the same way as a passworded account, it's much harder to remember a long, 32 character private key than it is to carry an username + password. Because of this, many users requested passworded accounts.
The private key system allowed to acquire returning users very quickly. In fact, over 400 000 private key accounts were created.
Now that drop.sc has established a solid user base, it makes sense to switch to passworded accounts. All in all, it was an interesting experiment and a proof of concept. Thank you all who took part of it and helped drop.sc become what it is today.
|
Replay packs are working again.

There is no way to delete a replay by yourself. You can drop a delete request to support@drop.sc with necessary information to make sure that you are the actual uploader.
However, the system is clever enough to detect same replays. If you take a closer look, both of the uploads should be pointing to the same replay assuming both of the uploads are public or private. No need to worry about uploading the same replay multiple times. The system will detect the duplicate and link to the original one.

Update
* Layout is now wider. More stuff fits into less space. * Sharing links are now optimized and pages load faster because of that * More backend optimizations. Hopefully fixed stability issues. * Added an icon for pro users * Added descriptions for replays uploaded via Sc2gears

The number of downloads is shown for every replay in the search results (the eye icon on the right side).. like here, but not currently on the actual replay page (ie. http://drop.sc/39214). Would you like to see the downloads on the replay page as well?
Anonymous commenting was enabled with the old user system. Bots started to become a problem, so I had to remove that.

Guys, I really could use some help. The servers, on which drop.sc runs, cost around 45$/mo and the ads generate only about 10-15$/mo. I've been paying everything out of my own pocket, but unfortunately I cannot support drop.sc forever.
I've received 0 donations and 1 registered pro account (huge thanks to him!) over the life of the website, which is now 8 months old.
Do you guys have any ideas on how to improve the situation? What would be something that you'd be willing to pay for? Or maybe there are some other ways to generate some income? Any help is appreciated, I'm kind of desperate here!

You could ask some Webhosters if any of them would sponsor a hosting package in exchange for being mentioned on the site. The requirements for Space and Traffic shouldn't be too high I guess?
Alternatively: Do you really require a full blown server to host the site? Maybe a simple webhosting package for 10$ could handle it aswell?

I thought these were good ideas as well, but went thro the both options and here's what happened:
I've already migrated the servers once (from Amazon EC2 to Linode) because the supposedly cheap Amazon couldn't handle the load ( http://drop.sc/news/9 ). While the current servers provide more than what the average load requires.. I'm happy to know that it has also handled a couple of bigger spikes that have happened. Older users probably remember the stability issues the site was having when it was hosted on Amazon.. laggy, unresponsive and down quite often. Fortunately that all is history after migrating to Linode.
I've had been really happy with Linode, so I decided to contact them asking for free hosting in exchange for promoting them on the website. They declined telling they don't do such arrangements.
PS. What is the forum etiquette for answering back to multiple posts? Is it appropriate to do it like this in one post?

Replay packs are working again

Oh my gawd! Just 227 replays short of 50,000 public replays!

50,000 replays was just broken!
Thank you guys for all the support! <3

Would it be possible to search by "latest major version"
So instead I can get all replays for a player that won't require a SC2 restart to watch?
|
Got so sad when I heard you were having financial trouble =( Best replay sharing site out there!
Donation after paycheck from me.
|
I still use drop.sc =) best replay site by far
|
|
Very cool!
Going to be using this from now on instead of sc2replayed, oh God...
|
Would be a blow to the community to see this site go away, will try to see anyone can help out.
|
Omg guys, thank you for the kind words!
@m3rciless: I'm extremely grateful for the impressive donation! Do you have a pro account? If not, please let me know your username and I'll upgrade it to pro (gets rid of ads).
I've contacted EvilGeniuses, GosuCoaching, day[9], Husky and SC2Casts about partnership/ads. Unfortunately no one has responded. Maybe I'm just bad at this stuff or they are not interested.

If you could choose one thing to change about drop.sc, what would it be?
|
Honestly I have no complaints at all. More people just need to use the site I think, I don't know why people use all these other sites which are so much clunkier.
|
Not a huge deal for me but is there a way to see how many times a replay was downloaded?
Edit - Nevermind, I see the number when you do a search, I was referring to when in your account page

Yeah, it was being able to search by exact version that made me think of this. I think the last 2 exact versions are "compatable"(?) so it would be nice to get all replays from those versions or something.

I clicked that I use the upload button by accident.. didn't realize order of options switched. I just drag and drop, best site ever for this feature alone :D

I use the button, because it automatically opens my replay folder, sorted down by date modified so I can see my latest games. Just the way I do it.
As for things I'd like to add...it's all pretty good, maybe just in the replay info add another tab with a bit more about the game; the supply/tech/whatever over time. For example sometimes I go digging for replays of pros and it'd be nice for me to be able to quickly see "hmm I'll go see how he transitions from nexus first" or "oh he just died to a 2rax").
drop.sc is by far the best replay site...best of luck getting a sponsorship, if I had the money I'd help out
EDIT: missed a "

That would be really incredible. Really put drop.sc way over the rest of the field. I don't know how possible that is.

Build orders is one of the most requested features, but it's incredibly difficult to do accurately. But we'll see.
|
Love your site. Nothing to improve really (except to add build order data obviously, but that has been said), but I have a few suggestions to help you if I can:
Replay Details -- I prefer game time instead of real time; please instead of just "real time", show "game time" and "real time", or make option to choose one or the other (please show this in search results too .. ie. "Antiga Shipyard, game time 18 mins, real time 14 mins ~ Today" .. or just game time ^_^)
Replay Search -- add filter for "TvX" "PvX" "ZvX" if you know what I mean; sometimes I want to search for replays of just one race, regardless of opponent's race
Player Search, add more to player data, such as: -- race most played -- # of replays on site having this player in it -- # of downloads of replays having this player in it (ie. to show popularity)
Events -- when you click on an event, add a search filter so we can filter for player, map, popularity, length of game, race, etc. (right now it's just a loooong list of pages of replays, no organization or way to organize/filter)
General -- Replace white on website with a light shade of gray or something please; flat white burns the eyes, especially when using your great site for long periods of time
Thanks! Great site! gg

Wow, great stuff here! Never thought that someone would prefer game time over real time. Most of your suggestions are doable. I'll definitely add the additional matchup filters and make the visual appearance easier for the eye.

On December 12 2011 02:12 nukkuj wrote: Is there a possibility to erase uploaded demos other than cancelling your account?
You can request a removal by sending an email to support@drop.sc. The system detects duplicate replays. So when you upload a replay and that replay already exists in the system, then it's actually linked to the existing one (to keep stats accurate). In case that 2 or more users have uploaded the same replay, who has the right to remove it? Cancelling your account doesn't remove the replays you've uploaded (at least I hope it doesn't, lol).
|
By far my favorite replay uploading site, keep it up bloom!

this is a really awesome site man. i'm a real noob when it comes to SC2 and being able to share replays and get replays from better players to help me learn is really awesome!

Sticking to gametime for anything sc2 related is just so much more convenient since it is the measure that the game actually displays. Theres no real use in translating everything to real time except if you want to know your real APM.
Another nice thing would be to calculate the spending quotient (SQ) for both players, if it actually can be parsed from the replay. You'd need total income, game time and average unspent ressources to do so, the formula can be found here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=266019
|
I believe the developer of SQ said the data needed is only available in the score-screen and not directly available from replays.
|
On December 12 2011 06:58 Primadog wrote: I believe the developer of SQ said the data needed is only available in the score-screen and not directly available from replays. That is correct. Theoretically, everything you need is in within the replay, but you would need to be able to simulate the game itself to achieve accurate results.
The replay contains every action generated by the player (selections, build/move/attack/etc. orders, etc.). Lets say the player clicks build SCV three times. All these three build orders are recorded in the replay. However, because the player had only 50 minerals, in reality, only one SCV started to build.
The above example also shows the difficulty of producing accurate build orders.

Very nice! It looks very clean and more refined. I like the simplicity.
I like the race and league icons. Maybe option to show league icon+rank on the page itself instead of mouse-over? (I understand you are going for simplicity; I just like having as much of the basic, important information as possible immediately available right on the page.)
Are you still going to change the color from stark white?
Also, can we get more replays on the page than just 8? I would like something more like 20 per page, or at least the option to choose how many.
Again, awesome site, thanks man!

10/1/2012 Just pushed a quick release
- Drag & drop for anonymous users has been enabled again - Computer players are rendered correctly now - "Loading" is now properly hidden for Own3D streams as well
I enabled the drag&drop for anonymous users solely based on the feedback. It really matters, so please keep it coming!
|
Looking really great. Love it!
|
Small comment, I find it less intuitive how you have to search for a certain play now. Before you could just type playername (if i recall correct?) but now you have to go to replays and then filter. It's not as intuitive as before. Also when using filter it would be nice if you could filter somehow for both players being grandmaster or just add a section of top replays, as it is now when you search for grandmaster you find tons of games with just one grandmaster and one master which are oftne just "look who i just beat" replays. I understand there are probably not many gm vs gm games because those players don't upload often themselves but sometimes others upload them and it would be nice if you want drop.sc to become the to-go place for replays.

just fyi some feedback -- i used to upload to drop.sc mostly to check my apm/share replays, but now that you require log-in and no longer have APM/APM graphs, i have completely stopped going to your website (in favor of using sc2gears).
e-- i used to be a huge fanboy of your site and now i am sad that it seems really mediocre (last time i checked). the best thing about drop.sc was literally all i had to do was type in "drop.sc" hit enter and drag n drop a replay file.
i really miss when you guys had apm graphs (also iirc it might not have been blizz apm?) and the most light-weight-ness ease-of-use of ANY replay site. that was what differentiated you from all the log-in based ones
|
@Vei
Thank you for candid feedback. Not sure when you last time used the website, but anonymous uploads were added back on the 10/1/2012 update (4 days ago). I must mention that I still suggest logging in (and by checking remember me -checkbox, it will stay logged in practically forever; so it's a one time thing) because then you get access to all available features.
APM data is coming back in the next update because numerous users have requested it. The thing with APM graphs is that they take so much space in relation how much valuable information they have. I'll consider adding them as well.
I encourage use of sc2gears. It's absolutely the best analytical tool for any serious SC2 player. Drop.sc integrates with sc2gears, so when you need to share a replay to someone, you can follow instructions here http://drop.sc/sc2gears_guide.
Your feedback shows you care. I hope we can win you back!

@BloomFilter I was one I emailed you asking about the anon uploads back on the 9th. Glad to see it finally got added on the 17th. I can confirm anonymous uploads are back. And I, and my friends, will continue using your site to host our replays. One of the best aspects is the stinkin short URLs. Makes for sharing the replays a lot cleaner.
|
Update 19/1/2012

Hey Bloom, I just saw your upgraded site today. I like what you've done with the place I really like the way you have done streams too. Really feels like a good SC2 community place, kind of like teamliquid website.
I see you put in the race option for TvX, ZvX, and PvX, and also a lot of my other suggestions Looking good man
more small suggestions:
-please give option in profile settings to "keep Filter toggled on" (so you don't have to click Filter every single time you hit "apply filter" and also every single time you come to the website)
-please please give option for displaying game time instead of real time (I don't care about real time at all; I think in "game time" when I think about sc2; real time means nothing to me in relation to sc2)
-give us a search bar in streams please
-I dont know if this is a good idea or a bad idea, but have you thought about putting a 'discussion/comments' thread for each replay so people can talk about a replay?
-I viewed the site with Iron (chromium-based browser, like chrome) and it looks right; but I view it in Firefox 3.6 and replay map name gets aligned to the left, overlapping with the player names (see image in spoiler; left browser is FF, right is Iron). I know you said in your FAQ that the "latest versions" of all those browsers are supported (and Firefox 3.6 is not latest version), I just thought I'd bring this up in case you felt like fixing it. If not, no worries, it doesn't bother me. I'm about to delete Firefox anyway.
+ Show Spoiler +
Awesome site, thanks man!
|

if APM graphs take up too much space, maybe have an option to "create APM graph" so it only does it upon request. i imagine that would save a ton of space

Website is up, we are slowly warming up the cache and starting up sub-modules.
|
Big update 25/1/2012
- Completely new replay page (http://drop.sc/97179) * Minimaps with player starting locations have been added * APM data is back due to several users requesting it * Removed linking to the individual tabs because it was breaking back button functionality - Game length is now expressed as game-time instead of real-time - Replay format (1v1, 2v2, etc.) is now detected automatically, so a 1v1 game played with 2v2 settings will now be recognized as 1v1 - Improved performance and security of the caching layer
There was some downtime yesterday due to extremely high load. I used this as an opportunity to make the big update. Apologizes for any inconvenience it might have caused. Please keep the feedback coming!

Looks good. Will post if any bugs comes up.

drop.sc is asking for donations, but I am a skeptic.
Can we get a confirmation that the site is looking for some help? I would be willing to pitch in to keep drop.sc going, but I am not willing to get suckered in by a hacked site.
Bloomfilter, any word?

He mentioned donating earlier in this thread, so I don't think it's a scam.

We are indeed doing a fundraiser. We are accepting Paypal donations at support@drop.sc.
The progress is updated daily. Right now, we have around 30% raised.
Every little bit helps. Please spread the word. Thank you for your support!

Tossed in what I could afford, sorry it isnt more, but budgets are what they are.

Is the site not working at all atm? I see the donation screen and absolutely nothing else no matter what I click on.

You can upload replays and download replays for which you have the individual replay page for; so replay sharing is still active, just not replay browsing.

Gave my contribution and I really hope they raise enough to get the site back to 100%! It is an amazing resource for the community.

Am I the only one seeing this different? I see people that take the initiative to start a replay-share site. Then more then a year later, they ask for money. Isn't this weird?

Isn't this weird? You're totally right for being suspicious, but from personal experience something like this starts out as a project that you have free time for and then you get really busy with "other things." Then a few months down the road you gain traction in the market and people start asking for this and that, and you can't abandon your "other things" since they are making you money and the project you did a few months ago isn't. Now, albeit sadly, you need a financial incentive to go back to something that started out as an idealized, share-with-community thing.

It's funny that people will drop $50 to $250 for second-rate fanart that takes the artist an hour or two tops, but when someone creates a solid program or website that is vital to the community and takes well over 100x longer to make, no one will drop any money on it.
|
they have been holding the replays hostage for some months now,, you arent gonna reach the fund goal any time soon so what happens now? This was the best replay site.
|
Looks like the site is completely shut down until they reach their goal which I don't think is going to happen given how much time has passed. I wonder if those of us who donated should get our money back? I mean is it just going to go into the owner's pockets or is it the case that the $1500 raised did keep the site going for a certain amount of time?
|
I still upload to drop.sc and hope it comes up some day in the future. For now, I just use ggtracker for my replay uploads/sharing. Not as simple/fast as drop.sc, but it works decently well till drop.sc's full functionality comes back.
|
Hmm... could just use sc2replays.eu
I rather prefer using that site, and since drop.sc appears to be down.... should give it a go.

Update 2/10/2012
- We experienced some downtime as we rolled out an update, we apologize for any inconvenience caused. - Introduced pro accounts, get upgraded now at http://drop.sc/upgrade
- Maps, Bnet ranks, streams and promoted replays have been temporarily disabled. We are working to fix these features.

Update 3/10/2012
- Profile crawler is happily crawling Battle.net again for player rank and league information
|
Update 4/10/2012
- Live streams are back! :-)
|
Update 5/10/2012
- Grandmaster and promoted replays now displayed on frontpage - Massive performance boost for replay search and promoted replays list
|
Hey, it is really cool that you are back up :D
And I think it's a good solution to get money over pro accounts, but please, give non pro-users at least a basic search function (name only or something), otherwise drop.sc is not really usable for somebody who doesn't want to watch random replays ...
|
I'd pay $10 - 15 one time for a "pro account" but I guess this monthly fee thing isn't marketed to me. Best of luck!

Forgive me if this had been addressed somewhere else already, but why not incorporate ads on to your website for revenue? Just simple non-intrusive ones on the side.
|
This is not going to work. When you deprive basic users of a search function, you end up insulting them and, I assure you, they do feel insulted. You've created this very helpful tool for the SC2 community and now, not only are you monetizing the basic service but you're also making us feel as if you were always in it for the money.

Start with Google Ads => Discover poor CTR => Approach potential partners that appeal much better to this gaming segment => Discover getting monetary partnership is fucking difficult (have sent dozens of proposals) => Re-iterate and think something else => Pro accounts
Open to suggestions, as always.

And we are definitely motivated to expand the feature set of pro accounts.

Costing less would make it worth it. I used to pay 5/month for runescape, I don't feel like paying the same for a search function is really worth the money.
|
Price needs to either be dropped for per month payments, or it needs to be a one-time-only pro account payment.
$5 a month is quite a lot considering some people like to use the site on occasion, rather that all the time.
When the site was live before the recent down-time, I would use the site maybe 2/3 times a month if I was struggling with a certain match-up or a certain map, so I would download a replay or two, and learn from it.
I don't feel paying $5 so I can search for specific stuff is worth it to be honest. Maybe for someone who uses the site regularly, but for someone in my position, not worth it...
|
Theres no way i'd pay $5 a month for something i use maybe 1 every 2 months. As long as people can still upload and share files fast and free, i'll keep using the site. However i understand you do need to cover costs, and it is a good site. Perhaps put a limit on uploads per month per user if not a pro account?

We are aiming to keep the basic functionality of drop.sc free. Thanks to the pro accounts, we now have a financial possibility to do that.
We are going to push pro accounts further with new features. If you have suggestions, please let us know!

Hi, Bloomfilter,
Thanks for your effort on this website. I really like to download GM level players' replay regularly. My suggestion is that to give different options (levels) of "pro account". I would like to pay $20 one time so that I have the search function (5 per month is like 60 per year too much for me). However I don't need the upload function since I'm not a pro player. I just want to learn some builds from pro player. Please consider more for casual users. Anyway, I like this website its the only place I can find pro replays when they play on ladder.

Hi Yunxing! Thanks for the feedback. We'll definitely consider this once the pro feature set has matured.

Quickly filter 250,000+ replays using advanced search Where's the basic search? It's not "advanced" if it's the only option.

On October 24 2012 20:23 snexwang wrote:Where's the basic search? It's not "advanced" if it's the only option. You can manually browse the replays or download the highlighted replays on the frontpage. Highlighted replays have been automatically "searched" for you. There is no search functionality provided for non-paying users at this point.

There is a number of ways to monetize a website and definitely forcing people to pay for an essential feature isn't the best solution. Anything from donations, through advertising and implementing premium features which would actually be worth paying for would have been better.
|
As long as we are talking about monetization at a level this generic, it's all handwaving. I apologize about my presumption, but the easiness of which you talk about monetizing a website using ads or donations gives me the clue that you have no idea what you are talking about. Donations? Nope. You can get hundreds of thousands of pageviews for $5-10 on facebook to give you the clue of the state of online advertisement. Been there, done both.
Subscription model has been the most profitable of all the monetization strategies we've tried during the two years we've operated drop.sc.
If my presumption about your knowledge was wrong -- I apologize and would definitely like to hear more of your advice.

only pro users can search? are you seriously limiting a basic site functionality to non payers on a site that wasn't even up for some time today? wow, had every intention to pay up until the search block slapped me right in the face. sad.
edit: if you really want to restrict people from searching the site (silly idea), at least charge only for using the filters, and leave the basic search available to all.

I have no problem with constructive criticism. Yours wasn't.
And now you are making up pretty random accusations. Ask anyone who was around when drop.sc was published -- it was a breadth of fresh air. The fact that thousands of players continue to use the site daily tell that it clearly provides something people need. Also, I've open-sourced my efforts long time ago https://github.com/alexhanh/drop.sc, helping sites such as ggtracker to born.
I will say this again: running websites costs money and SC2 community is hard to monetize on ads due to low rate of misclicks and low ad penetration due to high adblock usage. We need to cover expenses. Subscription model has worked great. It's simple as that.
If it doesn't have any real value added, what are you even using the site for?
Please do us all a favor and get the f out of this thread. You have nothing to give.

Our hosting provider, Linode, keeps pulling this kind of shit consistently
-------------------------------------------------- Linode continuously monitors the health of our equipment and we've been alerted to a condition which affects the physical server your Linode is hosted on. Your Linode needs to be migrated to a new server immediately to avoid extended downtime or data loss. Due to the severity of this issue, we decided that an emergency (immediate) migration is more prudent than scheduling maintenance. --------------------------------------------------
Rolling services back up now, drop.sc should be online soon.

We are back up, apologizes for any inconvenience.

Update 17/8/2013 - Most replays were not parsed because of the new long replay versions. This has now been fixed.
