This is amazing. Some filenames you'll probably need are here: http://elusive-teliko.blogspot.com/ Yeah, I've seen and used all the ones listed there, and opened up all of the major MPQ files that look similar to the background for ladder pages, profile pages, replay pages, etc. Tried replacing those (there are several for each), but had no success with actually changing what I wanted to. Anyone find the MPQs for the profiles/ladders/replays backgrounds? T_T Well, the profile one changes based on what your most played race is, but from what I can make out, it's; Most played race; Terran (Dimensions = 1097 x 362) = 8d7a70b7c5e15216d1c532bf88a42b6f2031fea7 Zerg (953 x 362) = c8dd92aed863642dd69ede90edd4cd49d7c46e1d Protoss (1097 x 362) = 5d101af2801f99579d0097490808b240bbffc52d Random (1094 x 362) = 1d43e0be2981f69c999d33d973c5236b9d25a879 I haven't tried these myself, I'm just guessing from looking at the dds files in the mpq, but they look like they should be them. Cool! Thanks a bunch. If anyone comes across the dds files used in the replay/ladder pages, please share them. I feel guilty when you're the one helping me every time, Teliko. EDIT: It looks a bunch like the 6f205b616... and 1b4d70bd8... files, but I'm PRETTY SURE those aren't it.

By the ladder pages, I mean the background that appears when you view your division standings, profile, etc. Thanks for the tip. I found base.SC2Assets in the Campaign folder, but can't seem to find the iu_battlenet_repaly_backdrop.dds file. Is there another base.SC2Assets, or have I just not found it yet? File locations would be enormously helpful!
Thanks, mate. :D

I really dont get what the big deal about modifying the game client is. A lot of other games let you modify your settings, with different HUDs, overlays, etc. I can see moving like mineral, supply, and vespene count closer to the center of the screen beneficial to a lot of players. Also an open mod community might also bring more attention to the game anyways.

They're lazy to do that and it's easier to say some words in TOS, that you can't do this and that. If anyone will do that, you will be banned and must pay another $60 to Blizzard cash for SC2.
Why blizzard can't make normal engine, where files cannot be described by any programm. So there will be less cheaters, hackers, map hackers, etc. Because now SC2 like an open source game, where you can change half of game. But you cant do that, because TOS. But what can some words in TOS vs bad peoples, who wants 5k achievement points week-after game released, or map hacks, or laggs more, etc etc.
C&C3 tiberium wars - EALA used file extension, thta cannot be opened by any programm. Because EALA bought specific file extension, that is unable to edit, open, read, delete, etc. Same for Red Alert 3.
What about DoW2. Fully open game, but here are also cheaters and DC-crashers. But still, game has a lot mods to unit skins (different weapon models, helmets, nicer swords, etc), textures to models, etc

Security by obscurity really isn't any security at all. And MPQ hacking is really just changing files or textures, the real hacks exist in a different space that would be unaffected by making the MPQ files "unopenable", which would be true only until people figured out how to open them. Take the GTA files for example, supposedly proprietary compression but you can now download programs that can explore, modify and export files from them. With the large userbase that SC2 already has, changing the file format would only stymie this type of modifications for a little while until the community found a way around.

With the large userbase that SC2 already has, changing the file format would only stymie this type of modifications for a little while until the community found a way around. I wouldn't even associate this level of MPQ editing with hacking. It's unarguable that no matter how secure a game is, it's going to get hacked if it's popular enough. Regardless of how advanced our computers might be at this day and age to be able to secure a game, they also have the capability to break that security. Ubisoft spent thousands and thousands of dollars on newly developed security for Assassins Creed Brotherhood, yet less than 12 hours after release it was available to the public for free via torrents spreading all over the internet.
I really don't see how people can call this hacking, however. This doesn't do any form of .dll injection, it doesn't modify game assets. It just takes a harmless file that's already there and changes it to something else that's equally as harmless.

Is it possible to edit the fonts of things such as your name?

If it is, they wouldn't be in .dds files. Just like the guy who asked if it'd be possible to change the green colour to red when you box units, while it's likely to be possible, I personally wouldn't know where to start looking for it.

Has anyone been banned/warned for doing this? And are you guys switching the dds files back to the original everytime u update or just leaving it there?

No one's been banned. Not swapping for updates.
