Hello, this is my first TL post and I was thinking that I should make my first post be an interesting one.
I have been played around with windows seven voice recognition and thought that it would be an interesting way to try to play Starcraft two or at least incorporate it into the game play.
I did a search first and from that some people were trying to use it with a more and Windows Vista of them turn out too well.
Anyway when I get home tonight I'm going to try it now and not specifically use only voice recognition but incorporated with my normal keyboard play.
I will try to post a reply as well as audio with what my commands are im thinking it might work well for like microing if it understands it quickly or I can say press one to select my base or press two to select my marine and so on.
As you can see, I wrote this post using the voice recognition software in windows 7 up to this point.
So, guys, lets see what if we can play a game! Plus, I think it would be loads of fun to do some 1v1 voice turnys!
Also, please do not say this is dumb and that you have better APM on the keyboard, I know that, but I was wondering if this would work, plus it could be a fun change of pace!
*******EDIT********
Some misconceptions so far... I am not talking about saying things like "Build Marine" Because it WONT do that. - I am saying that you can say "Press 5" if you had hot keyed your rax, it would then select it. You could then say "Press A" and it would build a marine.
I am also not trying to get any sort of "edge" on the game, I am just saying it would be FUN to watch or to try with a buddy after after a few beers.
Posts such as "My APM is better with my fingers" are not what I am looking for..
Anyway, time to head out for some of those beers with the buddies! Will post a video soon, promise!!
Well, what could you actually make it do with your voice? My understanding of windows 7's in-built voice recognition is that it just uses pre-determined voice commands to do things. Like "Open Internet Explorer" or something. What could you make it do in starcraft? You couldn't say "select hatchery" or something because it wouldnt know what to do.
lol u would be fucked in the late game yelling make SCV make SCV move army move army attack atttack supply depot, u would get tired and look like a fool

If there was a way to register custom commands to do something it could alter the game significantly I think. For example, during a micro intensive section of the game, you could call out "Build Probe" or "Charge" (get the upgrade), etc. Take care of minor macro while dealing with micro. Or even register "Burrow" and use it to burrow roaches or something.

I tend to do this anyway, except it comes out as + Show Spoiler +
'dammit dammit dammit fuck dammit no dammit STOP DYING AND KILL THEM'
If it made things happen better than micro I might be interested.

Yo dude I wish. I could be microing lings and then shout "MACRO" and I'd lose control for exactly 1/17 of a second while all my larvae were injected and more lings built. I would win every game.
"Build Marine" *I'm sorry, did you say 'Bill Murray'?* "No, Build Marine!!" *Marauder Building* "Fucking No!! Cancel!!" *I'm Sorry, did you say 'float command center'?* "What??! No" *Command Center lifted, all mining cancelled* "God damnit" *I'm sorry did you say 'type gg and leave game'?* "What??! no that's not even close to what I said" *Game surrendered, you lose* "FML" *hard drive reformatting*

Bassicly you can dictate to it, I wrote the whole post by just saying the words. Granted, "SELECT HATCH AND DESTROY WHOLE FUCKING BASE!" will not work, I can hot key 5 for my hatch and say "Press 5" "Press S" "Press Z four times" all while not having to move my fingers.
Also, there is no way this is against the ST&C, it is ment for handicaped people, sooo if they did ban me I would just let everyone on the internetz know that Blizzard does not like handicapped people!
You can also use a command "Mouse Grid" which will pull up a grid on your screen and you can tell it where to click. I think it would be amazing to watch a 2v2 where all you see is each team shouting at their computers.
The mouse Grid is shown in this youtube video, Sorry I do not have time right now to start recording my SC2 voice commands!

I think it would end up being slower. Especially if you use hotkeys. If you could program a single word command to do multiple things (Macro = Spawn Larvae, Turn all larvae into drones, then re-select units previously selected), then it could be helpful. However, with proper mastery of hotkeys, you could do all of these things (with two bases) with... 4, V, Click, V, Click, 5, S, D,D,D,D,D,D,D,D, 1 and then continue microing as usual. I'm definitly not the best user of hotkeys, but using minimap spawning and this hotkeying, I could probably do all of these actions within say 5-7 seconds.
Whereas, screaming: PRESS 4, PRESS V, Click, PRESS V, Click, PRESS 5, PRESS S, PRESS D EIGHT TIMES, PRESS 1! Would probably take a LOT longer to say clearly (I' m guessing 1.
And if you don't say it clearly... Who know's what the hell the computer thinks you're saying...
I'm sorry, did you say: "Presentation"? Did you mean "Presentation Creator"?
The one thing I can see this being super useful for is if you can set macros dynamically at the beginning of the game, like "set 5 main to 7 3 5" and it would give you the minimap coordinates for your base and then you could set the same thing for your natural and 3rd, and 4th, etc.
That way mid-battle, if you need to defend harrass, you can just say "main" instead of having to reach across the keyboard pressing backspace. Or you could use custom hotkeys.
this would be quite good :D and it would increase apm, idk if blizzard would "allow" this though

You can use whatever you want as long as it doesnt do a series of action... like a script... for exemple... since beta I use my mouse extra key to do stuff... every unit spell are on one key on my mouse.
Using the voice chat would be great... but... is win7 technology good enough for that?
If i wanna move my camera to my main and i say "MAIN" is it gonna be as fast as pressing a key on my keyboard?
Anyway, This is an interesting idea. It basically would be like using macro keys on a keyboard or mouse, but with your voice correct? As soon as your done, I'd love to see a vide of this in action!
Is it possible to use both voice and the keyboard? That might be worth trying - if you hotkeyed your rax, say, to 0 and then said "press zero" and then hit a/d on the keyboard to build units. Pure voice would almost certainly be less efficient than pure keyboard but it might be possible to figure out a way to use both and be more efficient.

Yes, and I might try that out in a few games. I am uploading the video that I just made to youtube right now. ... I will post it when it is done.
I guess you can pretty much teach it what you want. If anything I'd use this for temp saving unit groups or camera positions and recalling since that actually takes more time than 4sd to build drone etc. And trying to use one syllable words.
"Computer?" -Yes?- "I do not wish to play against this man. Engage 6 Pool" -Include BM? Y/N- "Yes" -GG Y/N- "No" -Send offensive PM post game? Y/N- "mmmm...Surprise me"
I am not saying that this is a way to play to win vs someone playing with a keyboard and mouse. I am saying this is a way to play with friends for a fun night of SC!
Although, there might be the possiblity of using it WITH a mouse and keyboard.... I am just not good enough at the game to be able to do any of that. lol
This thread is really funny for all the people completely missing the point. I guess even before you make a video of this project it is already hilarious, so its only going to get better from here!
I played a game of chess doing this a few months ago, it was pretty funny as I had to repeat things somewhat often. I'd love to see someone try it with SC, there should be an amusing video opportunity here.

Most of the people in this thread are thinking of this the wrong way. You don't program a whole script for it to carry out like "macro" or "scout". It would be closer to what Day[9] tries to tell people to do, except that it would be talking instead of clicking.
For instance, you're microing your army and you need to macro, you would say (let's say playing Terran doing 3 Rax w/ 1 reactor and 2 Tech Lab). "4, 4, S, (select an SCV with your mouse), B, S (Select placement and click) 5, A, A, Tab, D, D, 1, 1"
You just built an SCV, Put down a Supply Depot, started production of 2 Marines and 2 Marauders, and ended up looking back at your army.
Personally, I think it would be faster and easier to do all that with your fingers, as you can probably click faster than you can talk so long as you know what you have to press beforehand. Not to mention, remembering that sequence in your head vs knowing it through muscle memory seems harder to me.
This is, of course, assuming you can say so little for the commands to actually go through. If you actually have to say "Press 4" instead of just saying "4", then obviously using Voice would be worse.
That being said, perhaps you could just use it for a few predesignated actions rather than trying to use it for everything. Maybe you could use it solely for camera position so you don't have to take your fingers off of Home Row. Just saying "1, 1" to get to your army and "4, 4" to get back to your CC/Hatch/Nexus (and whatever other structures you hotkey, such as perhaps a warp-in Pylon that you have bound to 0), then it could be handy. Especially if you choose to bind map locations to the right side of the Number Bar. Saying "0. 0" or "9, 9" might be better for a lot of people if it means they don't have to move their left hand to the other side of the keyboard and then try to reposition it afterward.

At first I thought this was simply an amusing idea but hey, how about the camera position keys that you can rebind to F1-F4? If you could program it to recognize Main, Nat, Third, Fourth or something it might even be useful. Assuming you're using F1-F4 for something else already.. Eh, maybe one in one thousand might.. But still

i never understand why so many people make half-posts with the conclusion: Wait for me to come home then i can really show what i meant. just write the whole post when you're home -.-
i guess voice control would be really funny in a non-serious match xD

Also, the Warcraft 3 vid was pretty cool! However, that was all programed for WC3, wich it would not be that "hard" to use some sort of other application for voice commands to get it to "Build Rax, Here".

It is not too bad, you just have to say "Mouse Grid" and then pick a number and say "click". I had to play in windowed mode for the grid to show up, but it does work in full screen as well, I just don't know what parts of the screen the grid is. Watch the video that I posted on speech recognition for a better idea of what I am talking about.
Video is up, sorry it is a little shorter than I would have liked, but my drive ran out of space and I had to start over. Those 120GB SSDs fill up fast!
Also, I would like to point out I had a few beers and forgot half my hot keys!!
RyuChus, Did you go through the speech tutorial though? I did not do it my fist time and the recognition was HORRID. I then went through it and it worked great, it knew what I was saying the whole time. My only problem was that I never remembered what the letters are.
It is sort of like playing Mario with my mother.
"What button makes you jump?" "Ugh, no idea.. " "How do you not know?" "I don't know, I just hit the button that makes me jump, I do not remember if it was A or B, its JUMP!"
So there is something to be said for that.
However, I was playing as zerg in the video and just noticed how awesome it would be to have 5 hatch with like 9 larva each.. I could get my 300 food army much faster than someone with a keyboard. They would have to press a hot key to select all their hatch and then press "Z" 45 times to make zerglings. I could say "Press 4" (to select all my hatch) "Press z 45 times" I can garentee that I can say "Press Z 45 times" faster than someone can physicly PRESS Z that many times.

"Press R damn it!, er I mean Y.. derp..."
I wonder, could you have said "Press Right Arrow ten times"? If you got used to how far it moved every instance, you could probably become pretty accurate with it.
this is actually a pretty legit idea, since your mind moves much faster than your hands. i think it would be good for repetitive commands like select nexus, build probe, chrono boost probes, etc. just hopefully wouldn't interfere with your hands mouse/keyboard commands while doing these things =./

As more you play, the more instinctive you will start thinking and your hands will move automatically, aka "Muscle memory". Example of muscle memory would be a pianist playing a complex musical piece with closed eyes, as long as he/she knows where to start playing. Much more quicker than speaking. But combining speach and your hands would be an interesting idea, like when you microing your army and someone is doing drop in your base, you just yell "W 9 shift S at 5" "Warp in 9 stalkers at nexus (hotkeyd as 5)"

I can see the potential of it. If you keep the sound command simple such as "Vee", "Bay" and stuff like that.
Let me think of a few examples:
1. Mass inject larva. On your left hand, back remapped to "~" ready. On your right hand, left click ready. What's missing? "V!V!V!V!V!V!V!V!V!V!V!" while you spam ~ and left click as quick and as mindlessly possible instead of ~V*click*, ~V*click*. I think it'll be at least 30% faster.
2. Actually using the camera hotkey. Say "Set!" for a Shift + F5 and (re)"Call!" for F5. That'll be convenient especially for toss.
