Hey, so i was wondering... do you guys use numpad to select control groups? I've been using 1-9 under the f keys and was wondering if this would be easier to do if i used the numpad as opposed to the abovementioned method.

Are there any drawbacks? The only downside i can really see is that you would letting go of your mouse (right-handed) to select, and this might be hard to do mid battle.

Sorry, no. I don't think this is in any way shape or form more efficient than the keys right by your left hand.

I don't know of anyone that does that. I don't see how it would be efficient, either.

No, it would require you to take the remove your hand from the mouse or from the base WASD position.

You simply can't let go of the mouse while playing...I don't see how this would be in any way viable or practical. How would you micro in a huge battle with multiple control groups? I'm trying to imagine someone doing this, and I just can't

You couldn't do this before custom hotkeys, the numpad wouldn't work. And for all the naysayers, it wouldn't be good for your army, but it could be good for tech units (0 is pretty giant on most numpads and easy to hit over there even with your left hand, omg your hand can move!!!).
I always try to shield slam face, just to make sure it doesnt work

I dunno.. if you did something crazy where you were to rebind all the keys around the numpad it COULD have potential so you could keep your left hand there during battles and your right hand on the mouse.

Like if you did 0-9 as control groups, changed the enter to be "shift" so you could add to the groups, and like made "+" attack, then maybe used the insert/home/page up etc. keys to rebind to your unit productions and upgrades. You'd also have the "." "/" "*" "-" keys there that could all be rebound to needed hotkeys.

Just a thought...I wouldn't do it but I could see there being a lot of benefit to having that layout for your control groups especially if you have smaller hands.

Perhaps binding your CCs to 0 would be profitable then

I think it was in a handheld cam video done by Artosis at the GSL where I saw players doing that, takin their hand off the mouse quickly. But what you said is cool too.

I have a microsoft gaming keyboard that I can switch the numpad so it is on either side of the keyboard. I haven't tried using this with the hotkey setup yet. I will definitely try it now and see if it is any better.

SideWinder X6 Keyboard

Edit: I tried using the numpad on the left, but it was still a pain in the ass. No point using the numpad really, as far as I am concerned.

The only possible circumstance that I can think of for this to be beneficial is for left handed mouse users plus redoing hotkeys once its implemented.

probably moon, wc3 is a bit different and the inventory is bound to kp1 kp2 etc so the right hand is used for that sometimes (a precise tp and stuff like that).

I just double clicked numpad 7 for tp(teleport) in wc3.

took my hand of the mouse for a split second, so definately a good idea.

ye on wc3 if u usually want to tp fast u just do 77 on the num pad so that's different game ... elky use both hand on keyoard but if he's using an azerty keyboard, things are different like the M is next to the L instead being down next to the N for example so ...

Sounds like it might work if you were left handed, but I need my right hand for my mouse. =/

What is this I don't even.

2 Cases:

1) You use your left hand:

Then they are further than your regular 1 through 0, so it makes no sense

2) You use your right hand:

Absolutely retarded. What if you need to forcefield in a match up? What if you need to quickly hold position, or attack move with all 3 of your control groups?

No. No. No.

I can't believe I spent 3 minutes of my life writing this, maybe I should have put some insults to make it worth my time lol.

Hope this helps.

Man, it makes me wish I could design a keyboard specifically for sc2. I'd move 67890 to under 12345 so I could reach them

But, some gaming keyboards actually have num pads on the LEFT side of the keyboard as well. I was thinking of buying one for using items in wc3, but when I heard sc2 wasn't going to have heros or items, I decided not to.

So it could actually be quite efficient if you have a num pad on the left side of your keyboard, because I think taking your hand off the mouse is like losing your weapon in a sword fight :\

Numpad is worse because all the other hotkeys are so far away from the numpad.

Custom key bindings might change that though. Make "attack" the right arrow key, "shift" the down arrow key (can use to put units in ctrl groups), and all the unit/building hotkeys in the Insert/Home/PgUp/PgDn/Del/End block.

Just thinking about it, left handed people maybe, just because you still have your hand on your mouse, but aside from that maybe someone who is already comfortable with the num-pad keys and they can use their left hand to use the num-pad, and even then only in high micro fight situations where you aren't trying to tab back to your base to macro, given you have specific control groups for select groups of units, and you were indivudually attacking the opponents units, and even then it's tough because your hands are no where near the "a" button.

So probably not something that is generally going to be viable.
I sometimes do something other then play Starcraft... Rarely.

if u can't go on 6 , then u neraly can't copy paste with the keyboard... i'm left handed, using my keyboard with right-handed grid setup and i can still go to 0 ... a human being can do that , just train to be use to it.

Unless you have Boxer's hands (he used to use the arrow keys to move the screen) you really shouldn't consider using the keypad.

The numpad is just not efficient since you're probably going to be switching either of your hands around quite quickly all the time. That means a lot of time lost and a lot of effort wasted over what could be considered a negligible advantage.

If you have a third hand, however, then it would be an excellent idea.

Boxer was infamous for double handing the keyboard specifically using the arrow keys to move the screen.

I can't see it being feasible enough to set up a system to use the number pad but pro's definitely do use both hands on the keyboard from time to time.

you sure know a lot about something you never watched...

back on topic, I'd never suggest using the numpad unless you completely mapout new custom hotkeys.

So.... you saw it?

I could imagine numpad to be useful for some sort of lefthanded keyboard layout, but it would be something you'd have to get used to. I don't know of anyone who does it.

edit: should probably refresh threads before posting.

the problem with the video of moon playing was that what you saw him doing on the keyboard/mouse was NOT what was happening on the screen. it's incredibly obvious at one point where you see him hitting keys and clicking when on the screen all that is happening is a building is being placed, and hes waiting for something to finish before putting it down. but yes, there is a point where he does something with his right hand on the keyboard for a half second.

....lol your comment is so uncalled for. the video was just a FPVOD of moon playing WC3. Just so the public can see his apm. It wasn't a commercial.
