I've been watching alot of GSL and I just haven't understood how they keep the players from hearing what the casters say... nor how they stop them from hearing the crowds reaction or at the very least seeing the crowds reaction (the booths are translucent no?)
Because from what I've seen the backside of the booths are only covered by a thin cloth whereas the audio from the casters seems impossible to not hear; In the studio games because they're so close (you often hear them aloud even when watching the english casters) and in the finals because it's a godamned stadion with stereo setups. Ontop of that, as said above, the crowd cheering loudly.
And at the very least, they should be able to see the crowds reaction, if nothing else in the finals when they have a whole stadium full of them with those balloon bats they use to cheer.
Anyone know how the tournament staff prevent this? Or is it just player discipline not caring or just keeping to their own playstyle instead of reacting to the vague cheers of the crowds?
Thanks!

Jinro answered that in the most recent interview: There is really loud music in the booths, he had to turn up his audio to maximum to be able to play comfortably.
Edit (copypasta): "The process is pretty much what Jos describe, what most people probably don’t know though is that there’s quite loud SC music playing inside your booth to drown out outside sound, so you gotta play with your sounds set to maximum. When the game starts, the music goes way up too, masking everything. It’s good, but was a bit of a surprise for me."
|
I don't remember this from the videos, but is it possible that the curtain just covers a solid (possibly transparent) door? That, along with the very loud music, would probably make the booths soundproof enough.
|
haha ruining progamers hearing ftw.
But then, they still see the people from their booths yes?
|
there is loud music playing in the booths in addition to the booths not letting too much sound in
|
There's a door behind that cloth.

Wouldn't that completely screw up your hearing? As if fucking up your vision playing everyday isn't enough.

It's a very limited exposure, on top of that I can't imagine it being any louder than being in a nightclub.

They use light projector to hide the audience. Remember at Blizzcon? One of the player complained that the light was too bright and paused the game, he was playing agains Sen or Loner and he too agreed that it was too bright.
|
There is music and other noise that the players hear, this have never been an issue except for maybe Boxer
|
Interesting, never knew about the sound. Hopefully its not loud enough to cause damage.

you also wear ear buds under headphones (earmuffs?) whatever those big clunky headclamps are. i dont know whether theres anything playing out of them.
|
They often have ear protection, and then in earphones inside, so i guess they don't even hear the boot music, if they are prepared
|
I was wondering this when I was at mlg dallas spectating. It seemed like the players could hear the casting unless they had music blasting in their headphones or something bc everything was in the same room

Also, even if they could see the crowd in GSL, it's not really worth diverting your attention from the game, just to possibly see the reaction.
|
No you couldn't hear the casters at MLG... Also, people dont realize how much concentration it takes to be on top of your game. You cant really stop playing for a few seconds to try and listen to the casting...

Agree with this, obviously I'm far from a pro gamer level but even when I play with music, if it was a close game I will have no idea what music tracks were playing during that match, the brain just tunes some things out completely.

That was Demuslim complaining about the light in his match against Maka, I believe. The light on him was really, really bright, too.

When did this forum become full of nits? I'm sure if it was that bad people would be complaining about it. You can always wear ear buds with some ear protection over it too. I mean I'm pretty sure idra and other people would bitch about it if it was deafening.

Since we don't use CRT's anymore you can use a computer for 12 hours a day every day and not fuck up your vision anymore. The refresh rate and the way images were produced by CRTs caused that vision damage. LCDs don't have that problem.

I wonder how much loud music might end up throwing off players who are accustomed to playing with the music off. -_-

None, the players I'm sure got high end noise cancelling earphones. They dont use cheap headphones I'm sure and you otherwise would hear the progamers complain about this if it actually was a problem.
|
those big ass headphones that some people use (those grey really huge ones) seem to be covering a lot of the noise.
|
Wasn't there also a big screen above the players at mlg dallas? It would be obvious if they looked up to see it, but why give them the option. Yeah and someone pointed out there are doors on those booths, you'll notice Boxer knocks before he opens his opponents booth . So polite after crushing their dreams.

The players could not see the screen as it was facing away from them. I was at MLG dallas and standing as close to the players section as possible, it was nearly impossible to focus on what the casters were saying. Let alone be able to make sense of it when you're playing a game.

Assuming you like to play in the dark.

Demuslim claimed to hear the casters at the dreamhack tournament. Hope someone can eliborate here because if that was the case, then there is a possibilty that other players took advantage of it, rather than pausing the game.

I own a set of the ones they use. They're Sony XB500s or 700s (hard to tell) but they don't block an extraordinary amount of noise.
They should instead be giving the players the headphones Artosis and Tasteless use sans the mic. They're Sennheiser HD25s which are standard for media, casting and DJing work due to their amazing sound isolation.

Late in the game I'd kinda agree, but early game hearing the commentators talk about a proxy or all-in would be a massive advantage.

After having helped with some of the website stuff on site at one of the MLGs and being within spitting distance of day9 the whole time I can say that I didn't hear him once while casting and I wasn't even that concentrated on what I was doing ;p. There's tons of ambient noise at MLG and I'm sure if I was playing I'd be wayyyyyyyyy too focused on playing to try and hear anything.
|
I remember tastosis saying something about the booths being sound proof and yea, the gsl rules state that you HAVE TO have those huge headphones on at all times during the match so I'm pretty sure that they cant hear anything outside. Also, the crowds can react to any number of different things so I doubt they would actually take their eyes off the game to look at the audience. Only way I could see someone cheating is if they have someone in the audience giving them hand signals or something which is pretty retarded.
|
most lans force you to wear the soundproof headphone things, although lans like blizzcon if you hit ctrl s you hear everything the casters say.

Unnecessarily rude -- all the guy said was that it was interesting and that he HOPED it wasn't harmful to the players... no need to be a dick to him for being concerned about the people who are the main reason we have these great games to watch.

Really, HuK typing about the crowd obviously means he couldn't hear them.

You'd be surprised how much louder a cheering crowd is than pretty much anything else in the world. They rival taking off jets if the crowd is big enough.

Mm, at DH it was impossible to hear Day9 when the crowd was cheering, generally the sound level was low since to hear the casting you pretty much had to keep quiet. ^^
|
IEM's with earmuffs over top like they did in SC1 is really the only way I can see noise canceling with no side effects being achieved

Best is to put the players in different studio away from the audience and casters. Of course add in backup generators for safety.
