I've been trying to build a new list of songs to listen to while laddering, feel free to recommend soundtracks I should get.
Personally I don't want to hear vocals while gaming as it can get a little too distracting, so I really like to listen to sci-fi OSTs and epic orchestral soundtracks and trance music while I ladder, hell when the music gets good my APM tends to go higher xD
Here is just example songs that are in my list, they are the type that I am looking for if any of you can make some recommendations.
I know there has been threads like this before but I don't want to necro any of the older ones.
This is actually a pretty interesting topic to me. I'm a die hard metal fan, Starcraft 2 laddering is pretty much the only time I don't listen to music (even while writing papers or doing homework). Metal puts me on tilt waaaaaaay too much to win, especially as a zerg player.
This and fast classical music like it. Some of Beethoven's faster pieces play very well too. Care, though, that you don't get stuck listening or humming along the melodies and forget to macro. Its like that with any song though.
Although this piece in particular gets my heart pumping pretty fast, and focused really well on what I am doing.
This is the kind of music I listen to when I play. Personally I don't find music with vocals distracting. I don't know why on earth it would be in the first place.
I've been working on a "Zerg" station for Pandora. Going for a sort of dark electronic/industrial/metal feel, if that makes any sense. Here's some of the songs from it so far:
I feel like ideally, you want something hype. Usually I listen to laid back jazz rap, but when Im playing SC2, Il throw on some Wu-Tang, or lamb of god, whatever gets my blood flowing and my fingers clicking.
I love pretty much every song in this video. And also for all you Burning Crusade WoW nerds you'll probably remember this rogue (Kenion) he was a baller :D good vid/good music check it out!
I feel like this is very subjective as to what makes good sc2 music, one of my friends loves classical with Sc2 other one listens to speed metal I listen to techno.
I usually listen to some calm music like James Blunt or Eric Clapton when playing.
But sometimes you just really want to pump yourself up and then I turn on my special starcraft playlist, which is a collection of nearly all the music from BW proscene plus the music from GSL season 1 & 2.
Oohhhh my gawd, i had forgotten how great those were. Nice one
I personally cant play with slow music or classical soundtracks and whatnot (even if I really like them), so for me the best way to go is when listening to the Sensation White Podcasts. Basically the best electro/minimal Djs around the world packed in 1hour sessions. Currently there are 175 podcasts aviable.

Two Steps from Hell soundtracks are exactly the type I was looking for, thanks and keep them coming! Remember people will be more willing to try out your suggestions if you link your recommendations.
Ultimately you want to listen to music that's going to effect you in a positive way, not just stuff that you like and know, but music that will get you into the zone. For me I play best when I'm pumped, happy, and confident. When I played Unreal the instant Scooter popped up on my music play list I'd go on a killing spree.
I play Terran and i've always loved the Terran music, in SC1 and SC2. I just love the whole "Guitars in Space" theme they have going with it, really wish they'd release more themes in patches etc.
When it comes to recreating that atmosphere, I think the only artist that comes close is Joe Satriani. Music with lyrics bugs me when im trying to concentrate on things like work or macroing, so I appreciate Joe not ruining a good tune by blabbing about love or something over the top of it xD

this classical music will help ur game sososososo much.

Classsssssical wins I have to say. Personally I don't need something to get me more 'pumped' because I struggle more with staying calm. That is not to say that classical pieces are not exciting.
I tend to listen to kpop when I play, but when I'm in the zone, I hear nothing but the units and the game. Before I know it, I've blow through half an album and past my favourite song without even knowing it. So music is only for the down time, once the game gets going I am no longer listening to music.
@ actionbastard- I'm a huge fan of Punk when I'm not playing SC. Just seems like it takes too much of my attention when playing. I love The Unseen, Bad Religion, Thought Riot, and of course NoFx :D
Since there are 5 pages and THE Starcraft song hasn't been posted- please allow me the honor.
However, my personal favorites are the ones that put you into a trance-like state, therefore there is just about anything from Meshuggah. Beautiful music if you're into metal at all.
i actually usually always listen to music while playing starcraft, but ive been on a losing streak this past 2 weeks. today i stopped listening to music and actually listened to a podcast, and ive been alot more focused.
Alright, this is one of my favorite games of all time, and the music is AMAZING. No lyrics, pretty good feel throughout the whole thing. Think FF7 music but with a little bit more edge and crunch. Extensive use of keyboards and some techno elements.
i used to listen to metal and hardcore. then i realized i get so much more satisfaction killing peopels armies while listening to adorable japanese girls sing
Drone metal is perfect (or really any sort of ambient/minimalist music that ultimately increases your focus on the task at hand while calming you subconscious). the point of drone, specifically drone metal, is to illicit a borderline-altered state of consciousness through vibrations. it's meant to distort your sense of time and even displace you from it (which is completely possible with Microtonal music). i find it very effective for making me focus more on the game, it acts a sort of background noise that immerses me in it, and thus immerses me in the game.
This is a song off the album 'Towards the Rising Sun' by Ravi Shankar. Many of his albums have different sounds and styles to them, as he traveled and worked with many musicians. This album and 'Passages' would rank among my favorites. I would recommend looking into these albums if you are interested in this music at all. I listen to them very frequently, also I am a zerg player (Just thought I should add that).
God the things some people listen to... haha. Personally I think that you should just listen to anything you like, but if you want some suggestions here's some good stuff most other people probably won't suggest :p
Here's just a few... I could go on forever haha. Hope you all like it!
EDIT: To justify my choices... I chose these songs merely because I find them to be relaxing, and you are able to focus most on the game when you are relaxed and not preoccupied by music that is really fast or heavy or anything like that. But as I said it is personal preference, what makes me relax isn't necessary what makes you relax.
As far as my personal tastes go, playing terran fits really well with some good industrial but I'm not a huge fan of too hard of stuff like majority of Combichrist's work (while playing SC2 anyway)
So I like the following (I'll only post 3, but tell me what you guys think)
A good choice - especially since the song is 14 minutes, so it lasts most matches.
Also more industral/fast beat stuff. NIN, Marilyn Manson. I tried to make a pandora but it keeps playing stuff like Tool that just drags slowly which is fine, but sucks for starcraft.
anything metal and fast paced. thats what I'm listening to while I ladder. being a former musician it keep me in a fast paced train of thought and rhythem.
Some songs posted here definitely do not suit SC2 as a game soundtrack, I was hoping that people only post tracks that wouldn't feel too out of place if they were to appear in an SC2 expansion (for example) or a action scene in a sci-fi movie.
It's fine though, I just want to remind everyone that this isn't merely a post your favorite music thread(there is one for it already in the General forum), but more about soundtracks that suits SC2, or you can at least justify your choice.

well the question was what music do we lsiten to when we play sc2 so you got your postings here. What you specified now is a whole lot different
and really man listening to cute japanese girls singing while you win some big battle just feels awesome
Nah, my OP did mention the kind of music I was looking for, but hey like I said if the music you listen to calms you down during a match or gets you pumped up, feel free to suggest those kind of music too. Just trying to make sure that the thread is linked to SC2 in some way after all.

How about these tracks? I ladder to this music. Some day, you might too.
These two just scream future sci-fi to me the same way the terran themes do. Two great movies also.
Nice choices.
Considering that this is a sci-fi game, I'm surprised no one posted the Inception soundtrack. IT FITS LIKE A GLOVE.
There's slow, dreamy stuff and explosive tension sections with an up beat tempo. Johnny Marr (of The Smiths and Modest Mouse fame) adds twangy guitars that remind of the terran sound. It's just too perfect to not be done by anyone other than me. And no, I'm not talking about the trailer music (although that's good too), I'm talking about the actual music that was in the movie, by Hans Zimmer. I can recommend putting on the whole album since all the themes weave in and out of each other and the fact that it's such a good fit, but here's a couple of highlights:
Also, Nolan's Batman movies that Hans Zimmer (with James Newton Howard) also did the soundtrack for is fitting. The Scarecrow and Joker themes put it more on the Zergy side than Inception, which I would think fits better with Terran (because of Johnny Marr's twangy guitar) and Protoss (because of the dreaminess), but both are great for the entire game.
I like to listen to Simon and Garfunkel when I play.
seriously, I do.
also, and as much as I hate to admit it, I've been enjoying the first crystal castles album lately. btw someone posted the blade runner end theme, love that one. I like reap's remix quite a bit, too.

The Inception - 06. 528491 track is so epic beyond belief, its so powerful yet mellow and so tense, you can really feel it builds up to something spectacular, wow.
I'd hate to go off-topic, but moon was a fucking great movie. Slightly less off-topic; the soundtrack is pretty bad-ass too, now that i'm listening to it.
I've been looking for (Read: hoping to stumble upon) a song that does something every 40 seconds, reminding me to larva-inject. Like some kind of dubstep with a drop every 40 seconds, idk.
So I was in one of those games, map split in half both players at tier 3 tech fighting like hell but noone can really pull ahead. Mounting for a massive assault and this song comes on.
So epic, got me so pumped. Unfortunately I lost that game but it still had that awesome feeling of epicness to it.
The Fate Stay Night Movie OST is pretty awesome in general for almost anything. This is just one of the great songs on it.
I got a ton of songs from the recommendations so far, I hope others are getting new stuff they like from this thread too! Or old stuff that I forgot about but was reminded again.
I actually came in this topic to post some Two Steps From Hell. All of their stuff is so good, and To Glory is probably my favorite track. I love listening to this stuff when I'm playing.
I would bet that laid-back harmonic music would allow your mind to concentrate better on playing. That pretty much rules out most modern music. I don't know whether its more enjoyable or not but listening to something like a vivaldi' string quartet piece is probably more conducive to better play than other types of music.

Depends. if I may quote "The Voice of Reason" from starcraftarena.net:
Listening to music in allegro- fast tempo, upbeat rhythm- actually increases the rate at which the heart pumps blood, and the rate at which your lungs expand and contract. That means that you get more blood in your fingers and brain, the main two components of a Starcraft player. This extra blood means more oxygen, meaning that your brain can function more efficiently, resulting in a shorter reaction time. You fingers also benefit; more oxygen is carried to them, allowing for the Krebs cycle to occur in your muscle cells. The Krebs cycle manufactures ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, out of oxygen and several other compounds. ATP attaches itself to components of muscle cells, and causes them to expand or contract based on electric charge. Listening to upbeat music helps you play faster.
Music that causes influxes of adrenaline- very rousing music, such as hard rock and metal- affects your play dramatically as well. Adrenaline actually increases reaction time more dramatically than about any other compound besides amphetamines (which are highly illegal in almost every economically developed country). Adrenaline lets your instincts do the decision-making; it is a compound that humans used to use to decide whether to fight or flee. Gamers are faced with much the same situation in a good game- during a big attack, for example. Rousing music may facilitate the release of adrenaline, allowing you to make decisions quicker, and be generally more alert.
Be sure not to turn off your game sounds, though; you don’t want to miss the fact that you are supply-blocked or that you are being attacked.
I would add that aggressive, fast music can make you feel uneasy though, thus it is definitely a players choice and a lot depending on the mood you're in. When I just woke up I don't want to listen to fast-tune music, because it makes you feel uneasy, whereas slower, relaxing music makes you feel calm.
if you have ever come accross the Japanese's Mahjong Fight Club Series, you should know about it.Those are very good music which suits most games imho. can't find a link on youtube though :/
I think music that fits you playstyle can be helpful. Sometimes when I'm playing Macro zerg I like to listen to symphonic music. Pandora is really an excellent source for music that you're not familiar with. They really have an excellent selection of any style you can think of.
I'm fine with the music as long it doesn't have too much melodic singing as it can be distracting. I absolutely love the vocal trance radio on Itunes.(even though its called vocal trance there's not too many vocals, just epic trance) I think Huk listens to it too!
That said as time's gone on I've been loving the sc2 music more and more. It really is a superb soundtrack. I hope Hots brings some awesome riffs to the zerg like BW did. Anyone else agree?
when i play sc2, i like to listen to drum and bass music and metal. realy gets you pumped up for your match. you should listen to some Camo & Krokked, and london elektricity they are both great
personally i listen to quite a lot and different music while playing sc2 or games in general...
but what i think suits pretty good for sc2 is, like someone already mentioned, definitely Ronald Jenkees his songs always kinda remind me somehow of the terran themes of sc and sc2 too bad he hasn't released new songs
Didn't know that band , it sounds a lot like death metal though different . I am not really so into death metal but it does sound allright .
I tought it would take a slipknot like tune after screaming glad it didn't , everything is better then slipknot ( even justin bieber ) .
Ye meshuggah is amazing, definitely very different to slipknot. They have very little melody in their songs but instead they have just the sickest rhythms. Try to check them out, I'd recommend Chaosphere since that one might be easier to get into for someone who doesnt know them yet.
I usually fire up one of A State of Trance Yearmixes by Armin van Buuren. 80ish of the best trance tracks for each and every year since 2005 in 2 hours in a fast paced, constantly evolving mix, hell yeah!
lol well i listen to a custom playlist its got a lot of good stuff on it it you like it send me a PM and ill make custom playlists for anyone that wants one.
This may sound lame. But for laddering, I like to play the songs that are played before and after the GSL matches because then I can pretend that I am in a booth playing in it. May sound dumb but it makes me look forward to laddering rather than perceive it as a grind or a nerve racking thing.
Sadly, I can't play music on my cpu whilst I played (taking a break) SC2, but the issue is going to be solved due to my wonderful dad giving me a record player for christmas. So I'll probably get some ambient, dubstep and rap when it comes to my SC2 "soundtrack".
I like the Tron soundtrack quite a bit for laddering. No words, nice mix of cinematic orchestral elements with techo/Daft Punk stuff, and a generally staid pace, which I appreciate since it helps to stop me from panicking when trying to multitask.
this doesn't really match the environment if you want to do some serious laddering, but if you're just screwing around with friends, sync everyone up to these play-list:
They guy has about 4 200 song play-lists and my friends and I are going through them for the 3rd-4th time. It's awesome to try to guess the songs without alt-tabbing and just getting really nostalgic when it gets to a group favorite like Chrono Cross/Trigger.
Listening to Katy Perry makes me pretty good, except that sometimes I lose by getting overexcited and typing the lyrics to my opponent as I sing them. Missing overlords because you're typing "DAISY DUKES, BIKINIS ON TOP" is a bummer.
Wow thanks for this thread I have been looking to expand my play list and all these great posts of your guys music' has helped a lot! I enjoy classical, KPOP, and techno remixes especially daft punk. But I am open to trying and listening to anything new that has a fast pace beat.
I like some good death or black metal and grindcore influenced death metal (especially Napalm Death, their cover of Massacre's Clangor of War is so awesome to ladder to) simply because it's faster than what I normally listen to which is stoner/sludge/doom/heavy metal and stoner/southern rock whilst still retaining the overall heaviness of the music.
Varies between dubstep and metal. Got some dub mixes that I just put on and love; metal wise... depends what mood I'm in. Love faster stuff - Gorerotted, Desecration etc. - if I'm pumped, if I'm sluggish, more along the lines of Wedard or Summoning :D~
I have a last.fm profile. Search for Graycloak in Last.fm. It plays tracks ranging from movie soundtracks to hard rock, prog rock, heavy metal, death metal, symphonic power metal, prog metal and gothic metal.
If you've seen my stream you guys already know I usually listen to DnB or techno/dubstep anything of the electronic domain really, occasionally I'll listen to some rock like Rise Against or something...
BUT
very rarely (almost never) I like to listen to KPOP because well.. Im a guy, and watch this video ^^
I like listening to trance/Orchestral aswell, Lux Aeterna - Requiem for a Dream is fucking epic to listen to as well as any Theme/soundtracks done by Hans Zimmer....
off topic but this is fucking epic aswell
Also does anyone else think the guy with shorter hair looks kinda like ToD
Nice thread! Someone should make a compilation list with all the suggestions here... Maybe I'll do it when I have some more time (need to prepare lunch before MLG starts lol)
I used to listen to alot of dubstep and electronica while I played, but now I tend to play with no music or sound whatsoever, unless im just messing around doing 2v2s and such, I feel like I play alot better with no input other than visual.
I'm all about the trip-hop and downtempo when it comes to SC2. I find it helps to calm my nerves a little and it suits the game's atmosphere so well. Trentemoller, Massive Attack, Bonobo, Nujabes, Nomak, stuff like that. I'm big into trance usually and sometimes I'll listen to some of that, but generally I find it doesn't suit the game very well and I like my music to fit with what i'm doing.
mimosa is one of my fav projects ever and this song is a great example why. all their albums are good and diverse, so you don't get bored hearing the same beat over and over.
What is the purpose of the conductor? The musicians are looking at their notes not him it seems like.

Ehh, most of the stuff a conductor does is behind the scenes, like choosing pieces, judging balance of the orchestra, organizing players. The stuff on stage is just to keep tempo and cue players, but is mainly just for show since players generally know how to play.

You can see him in your peripheral vision and it really helps in keeping track of the beat, etc. A just in case kind of thing.
I've only played in elementary / high school so take what I say with a large grain of salt.
Just type in idra music on youtube and listen to the two playlists I have listened to all kind of genres while playing, but in my opinion dubstep is by far the best choice.
Depends on the race IMO. I personally like listening to Rammstein and the likes when I play terran. When playing Zerg it's mostly Dubstep and House. The Protoss style of play fits very well to this: + Show Spoiler +
I've noticed that I play sc2 way better when I'm listening to kpop, guess that's what happens when you watch hours and hours of Korean streams. Haha :D
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums. Looking to become an active member of the community. I'm in a progressive metal band out of Boston, MA. If any of you guys are fans of any genre of heavy music, check out our song "Hive Mind". A few of our songs, including this one, are based upon Starcraft in therms of the lyrics. This one happens to be written from the perspective of the Overmind.
EDIT: By the way, I also write some instrumental stuff, so if there are any casters or streaming players that want some heavy ass background music, I can write you something original. This goes for any of my band's current stuff as well, just throw up a link for us
