I just bought myself a new laptop, a macbook pro and I love the keyboard! I find it really comfortable for SC2. I'm just creating this thread to ask the community what you gents think the pro's and con's of laptop v desktop keyboard play is. Will having a laptop make it easier for one to enter tournaments or will it inevitably handicap a player looking to compete at a higher level? How important is keyboard style? and does the keyboard really improve gameplay and APM in a player?

thoughts?

Cheers!

Friends don't let friends game on laptops.

There's a reason, terrible key layouts are one of them, flat keys another. Laptop keyboards are also too small. Also, I don't know about you, but a laptop screen position is far from my optimal gaming screen position.

I play on a laptop as well.
A few days ago I played SC2 for the first time on a pc at a friend of mine.
And I have to say, a normal keyboard is way way better IMO.
I am going to buy one today

I've had a USB keyboard that I've used for gaming for about 6-7 years, but for starcraft I agree with you fully, the macbook pro keyboard is the best. Particularly because of the handy option to swap the command and control modifier within the SC2 settings, unless you're running through boot camp.

If only the unibody case didn't slice at the wrists so harshly...

IMO this keyboard is great, I played brood war on a PC and that was fine but this new keyboard I feel has really improved my play style specifically macro. Im just worried Im going to wear out the keys... at least an external keyboard is easily replaceable

also, with regards to keyboard size.. would a larger keyboard increase the margin of error for a mis click etc?

Whatever is most comfortable for you is best. I can't stand using my laptop's keyboard, so at home, I have a nice mechanical keyboard that I plug into it. If you like the laptop keyboard and can play on it, it's fine.

Played on a Macbook Pro for a while. It was horrible. I had a lot of trouble "feeling" the keys. And the layout really isn't comfortable for assigning groups, etc.

The keyboard isn't really going to affect how good you are. If you like it use it, if you notice you keep missing keys/thinking you've pressed keys when you haven't/discomfort/other issues then worry about getting a different keyboard

I'd say it is a matter of what you're used to. Plenty of people game on laptops without problems. An advantage to regular keyboards is that there is always one easily available. If you're used to your laptop then you can't find a separate resembling keyboard to attach to a desktop. And if you play tournaments with provided computers, that could be an issue. (Now if you'd talk programming, regular keyboards are a must because laptops always screw up the positioning of home/end/delete/page keys, but such things aren't relevant to playing starcraft.)

I hate playing on my macbook, mostly due to the "Fn" key being where I would like the Ctrl key to be... also the fact my Macbook is old school and runs off Intel integrated graphics makes it kinda hard..

Playing SC on my desktop is MUCH nicer, maybe due to the fact I got a SteelSeries 7G the other day.. who knows :p

i have a Dinovo Edge keyboard in my home that i used to use for all kinds of stuff...it broke down and got a new one from guarantee, but in the meantime i bought some cheap logitech cordless desktop keyboard with big keys...

I can't ever see myself to play sc2 on that dinovo edge ever... The keys are way too flat...i feel like i have 0 control of what im doing on a laptop keyboard.

To each their own i guess
I'm Norwegian/Dutch. Just the awesome parts of them though :D

I prefer gaming on my laptop. I can pretty much game anywhere and I am much more used to using my laptop keyboard than I am my desktop. All I have to do is plug in my wireless mouse and I'm good to go.

Mechanical keyboard all the way. Hate flat keys

Dont get how people can game on laptops... Small screen, small keyboard. But whatever suits you i guess.

I used to play BW using my laptop keyboard for 2 1/2 years until I got a separate USB keyboard around a year ago. I have to say, I find the new keyboard a lot more comfortable.

i hook a keyboard up to my laptop
keys are much easier to hit and take more abuse. laptop keyboards, sturdy as they are, can be pretty flimsy

the flat keys are nothing compared to the chicklet style keys, these are terrible for SC2/BW

Played on macbook last year, even when running windows mode the ctrl button felt like it was in a weird place. And it heats up really, really quickly. before you know it your left hand will be sweating as you play... not to mention flat keys :S
