I just bought myself a new laptop, a macbook pro and I love the keyboard! I find it really comfortable for SC2. I'm just creating this thread to ask the community what you gents think the pro's and con's of laptop v desktop keyboard play is. Will having a laptop make it easier for one to enter tournaments or will it inevitably handicap a player looking to compete at a higher level? How important is keyboard style? and does the keyboard really improve gameplay and APM in a player?

thoughts?

Cheers!

Friends don't let friends game on laptops.

There's a reason, terrible key layouts are one of them, flat keys another. Laptop keyboards are also too small. Also, I don't know about you, but a laptop screen position is far from my optimal gaming screen position.

I play on a laptop as well.
A few days ago I played SC2 for the first time on a pc at a friend of mine.
And I have to say, a normal keyboard is way way better IMO.
I am going to buy one today

I've had a USB keyboard that I've used for gaming for about 6-7 years, but for starcraft I agree with you fully, the macbook pro keyboard is the best. Particularly because of the handy option to swap the command and control modifier within the SC2 settings, unless you're running through boot camp.

If only the unibody case didn't slice at the wrists so harshly...

IMO this keyboard is great, I played brood war on a PC and that was fine but this new keyboard I feel has really improved my play style specifically macro. Im just worried Im going to wear out the keys... at least an external keyboard is easily replaceable

also, with regards to keyboard size.. would a larger keyboard increase the margin of error for a mis click etc?

Whatever is most comfortable for you is best. I can't stand using my laptop's keyboard, so at home, I have a nice mechanical keyboard that I plug into it. If you like the laptop keyboard and can play on it, it's fine.

Played on a Macbook Pro for a while. It was horrible. I had a lot of trouble "feeling" the keys. And the layout really isn't comfortable for assigning groups, etc.

The keyboard isn't really going to affect how good you are. If you like it use it, if you notice you keep missing keys/thinking you've pressed keys when you haven't/discomfort/other issues then worry about getting a different keyboard

I'd say it is a matter of what you're used to. Plenty of people game on laptops without problems. An advantage to regular keyboards is that there is always one easily available. If you're used to your laptop then you can't find a separate resembling keyboard to attach to a desktop. And if you play tournaments with provided computers, that could be an issue. (Now if you'd talk programming, regular keyboards are a must because laptops always screw up the positioning of home/end/delete/page keys, but such things aren't relevant to playing starcraft.)

I hate playing on my macbook, mostly due to the "Fn" key being where I would like the Ctrl key to be... also the fact my Macbook is old school and runs off Intel integrated graphics makes it kinda hard..

Playing SC on my desktop is MUCH nicer, maybe due to the fact I got a SteelSeries 7G the other day.. who knows :p

i have a Dinovo Edge keyboard in my home that i used to use for all kinds of stuff...it broke down and got a new one from guarantee, but in the meantime i bought some cheap logitech cordless desktop keyboard with big keys...

I can't ever see myself to play sc2 on that dinovo edge ever... The keys are way too flat...i feel like i have 0 control of what im doing on a laptop keyboard.

To each their own i guess

I prefer gaming on my laptop. I can pretty much game anywhere and I am much more used to using my laptop keyboard than I am my desktop. All I have to do is plug in my wireless mouse and I'm good to go.

Dont get how people can game on laptops... Small screen, small keyboard. But whatever suits you i guess.

I used to play BW using my laptop keyboard for 2 1/2 years until I got a separate USB keyboard around a year ago. I have to say, I find the new keyboard a lot more comfortable.

i hook a keyboard up to my laptop
keys are much easier to hit and take more abuse. laptop keyboards, sturdy as they are, can be pretty flimsy

the flat keys are nothing compared to the chicklet style keys, these are terrible for SC2/BW

Played on macbook last year, even when running windows mode the ctrl button felt like it was in a weird place. And it heats up really, really quickly. before you know it your left hand will be sweating as you play... not to mention flat keys :S

Got a laptop, but I bought USB keyboard for gaming. On laptop keyboard it felt weird, keys were flat, and I had to look on display in a weird angle. I definitely think that standard keyboard is much better.

I love gaming on my Toshiba laptop (the keyboard is the best keyboard I've ever used, and I even own a Logitech Illuminated keyboard which is pretty damn awesome). I love the low profile of the keys, I find it great for SC2 (mind you I'm only a lowly silver player :p)

yep. i play on a laptop as well, and my function key is no where near my left control.

if it really bugs you, you can reprogram the keys through the registry.

i haven't noticed a difference in response when using a laptop or a full desktop keyboard. in fact, i think the laptop is easier to use since the keys ARE scrunched up. you should be used to it just from regular daily use, and its easier to use all the hotkeys / control groups since the physical keys are closer together.

Okay, seriously? Macs aren't that bad. The fact that I refuse to play Starcraft 2 on Mac OS X is not because the game is slow, but because the mouse acceleration screws with me, and there's no way to simply turn it off.

Back on topic.

I hate using my Macbook Pro keyboard because the F10 key is *directly* above the '0' key. I use the "classic" hotkey setup, and i tend hit F10-P trying to build probes and accidentally pausing the game more often than I'd like. After a while, I bought the cheapest keyboard I can find, and used it as a dedicated StarCraft keyboard.

Shipped off to university I'm forced to play on my laptop. It sucks. Seriously, I feel really restricted and cramped also when my laptop gets hot I feel it too and that is a little irritating. My biggest gripe is the immobility of playing on a laptop I cant really shift it around cause' the screen would move as well (duh).

Furthermore, my laptop can only handle low graphics.

I use both my Laptop and Desktop actively. So I'm used to both keyboard layouts. By far I'd say a normal Desktop Keyboard is much much better than a Laptop one. You really feel the game go through your fingers on a regular keyboard, while on a Laptop keyboard it feels like you're just rolling your hand around on it.

I play on a desktop, but I love the flat keys. I actually put a Mac Pro keyboard (not the undersized ones... it has all keys in normal positions) with the flat keys and it's the best keyboard I've ever used for gaming.

I prefer flat keys because it is very easy to slide your fingers across. I don't lift my fingers when I move my hands, as I find it a lot easier to accurately track my hand position if it stays on the keys. Normal keys with ridges cause my fingers to "jump" as they slide across, which is annoying and occasionally causes me to hit the wrong key.

i have a flat key keyboard for my desktop, and i love it

i allow feel i game better on my laptop, proof was positive when i played bw because i was more accurate on the laptop then i was on the desktop

(this is because my desktop is set up where i sit on a couch, super lazy style, rather than in a chair close to my monitor)

i think the equipment might be technically worse, but if your comfortable then laptops are great i think

Been gaming on a laptop for 3 years now, and I quite like the flat keys. But I must admit, that I have been considering getting a new screen and keyboard and hooking it up like a normal pc, but I fear that It'll take too long to get used to a normal keyboard again =/ Finding it a real pain using a friends G15 so far.

I play on a macbook pro. I use the apple bluetooth keyboard, a logitech mini optical, and play on an external monitor.

I don't have any problems with the keyboard or flat keys. You get use to it.

I sometimes play on the family computer with a regular keyboard and it's fine too. I honestly can't say I prefer one over the other.

With both my only problem is my fingers getting kind of "lost" when I have to hit a key farther to the right.

The problem I have with Starcraft on my laptop is my keyboard has a delay between keystrokes I can't seem to change anywhere in the settings. Its not a huge delay but quite often when I try to 1a2a3a my army at my opponent the keyboard fails to register some of the control groups or attack commands. Its incredibly frustrating.

I cannot understand how anyone can game seriously with an island keyboard. The keys are far too shallow and easily pressed to reach decent APM.

My Lenovo has a keyboard that might be passable for gaming, however I don't want to destroy the weak scissor keys so I use an external instead.

The main reason I don't use my laptop's keyboard while gaming is to prevent damaging them while playing. Just buy a cheap USP keyboard, and you'll be glad you don't have to replace the keyboard on your laptop anytime soon.

It's all in the matter of getting used to whichever, I personally think they're the same. I've played both external and on laptop and I'm currently using my laptop for sc2 gaming. I don't find any difference in terms of comfort and game performance.

I used to game on a desktop, but recently got a laptop. I have to say, I like the positioning of the desktop keyboard more. For one, they dont have that damn function key next to the right ctrl button, and the keys feel better.

The screen also isnt at the greatest position, but you gotta live with it I guess.

Surely that's the same as terrible hardware. Say I spend 2000USD on a PC and 2000USD on a Mac. My PC will outperform on any benchmark you care to choose. So if I use the PC as a the baseline, the Mac is terrible. (I guess you could argue that PCs are just awesome if you use Macs as the baseline...)

What is good software? Better performing? Since this is an SC site, SC2 runs better (higher fps) in Windows bootcamped on your Mac than the native OSX.

As long as you have a laptop good enough to run the game well, I don't see any reason not to use one. The shallow keyboards are generally considered inferior for gaming, but I guess it's a matter of preference. Personally, I use a laptop with a USB keyboard.

I have this external USB Logitech keyboard on my laptop:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Compact-Keyboard-K300-Black/dp/B002CWZ29S

I know it's a flat keyboard. But I like it because I don't have large hands and long fingers, and the keys are so close to each other e.g. F1 ~ F12 keys. It's super comfortable for me.

Edit: Also, it has the Function keys (FN) next to Ctrl keys, too.
