So why don't we just finally ban any mentioning of any league or rank so the posts have to convince by having good arguments, not by having the phrase "I'm an XXX Point YYY Player" on top of it?

I don't think gold or platinum players never have anything good to say (but i might be biased there), sometimes they have good ideas or stumble by error on something that the top-players in their perfection miss.

I have to agree completely with the "you can do almost anything and win" line. I can win games with almost every strategy that I read on TL as long as I don't do anything stupid like charge into a ramp covered in tanks and consolidate my advantage at the right time by taking expansions or tech

Low diamond (~500): D-
Mid diamond (~800): D
High diamond (~1200): D+ through C
Top diamond (~1800): B- / B

I think I'm more amused by the entitlement on all sides. If youre in diamond and achieving a net point gain I dont think its entirely unreasonable to assume youre top 20% on the server. I think people often miss just how bad most people are at this game. Seriously, go click on co-op youll be amazed by the number of people who feel thoroughly challenged by medium AI.

Now just because youre top 20% doesnt mean youre hot stuff but it doesnt mean youre completely useless. Meaning, its great if you want to post whats working for you or what you need help on. Nor do i see much wrong with posting your points it lets you take posts with a grain of salt.

For example, lets say I make a post and say im 900pt diamond having trouble with my tvp when i open 2 rax expand. At some point inevitable some one will post with a silver, gold, or plat account and tell me to three rax my way to victory because you know its OP. I know right off the bat I can go ahead and ignore that post because hes in gold. Where as if some one say theyre 1100 diamond and tells me that hes had great luck placing a reactor on the second rax so I have enough to fight off more void rays I know I can accept that suggestion and its worth trying.

Why is it worth trying? Because hes OMG 1100 points? Nope hes still not that amazing but lets be honest I would love for TLO to come grace me in every post I have for help but its not going to happen. Infact while many, many of the great current sc2 players come to TL they do not post in every I need help thread about strategy. So at some point we have to help ourselves.

Why did I not listen to our happy gold player? Because the things at gold dont necessarily work at diamond. At gold plat or even a lot of diamond 3rax is a pretty powerful build, it does however stop being as awesome in diamond because you can no long count on people not building a sentry to stop your timing attack or for that matter actually macroing 100%.

Do gold/plat people sometimes have great insightful post, yes. However don't be insulted if people dont respect your opinion based on your ranking. Its about creditability, and despite how little creditability a 800pt diamond has its still much higher than the average goldie.

Very well thought out and careful post, I like it a lot. Pro's are pro's because they are the best, they've proven it in tournaments. Having an invite-only thread isn't elitist.. it's empirical.

Kudos

Oh and I agree with the above, I think your equivalency chart may even be fudged a little higher. I find my D/D+ friends around 600-900 Diamond usually.

I agree with you 100%. It drives me nuts when people use league and points as proof that someone is good and knows that they're talking about.

I'm in plat. I know that if I laddered more, I could get bumped to diamond. Even when I was in gold, it was constantly putting me up against plat/diamond players and I won almost every game (when it promoted me, I was 20-4). But at no point have I ever been delusional enough to think I'm a great player and that I really "knew" the game. My only trick was putting a lot of effort into macro and expanding when I knew it was safe to do so.

There's such a huge difference between someone who keeps up on all of the newest and bestest builds posted on the internet and ladders enough to earn a lot of points and an actual top level player. My biggest hope is that some day people will realize that being a diamond player with a lot of points doesn't mean as much as they want it to mean.

Forum needs a rep or thumbs up system for posts.
The OP was one of the best I've read on here for quite a while.

I'm of the opinion that the game is far too early in it's life cycle to make any judgements about balance or even the future of the gameplay. There are far too many people who think they are good crying about imba when they really should be just trying to understand and play the game better.

I agree with the OP. Myself a 600 - 800 diamond in 3 playlists and I feel like a bronze when I look at real pro playing.

Really? o.O
I'm 880 platinum (formerly rank 1 in my division, currently rank 2).
When I watch the top players play, I don't feel like a bronze... I feel like I could actually beat some of their tactics. That might seem a bit cocky or may be too confident in my abilities, but I surely don't feel like a bronze.
Oh wait... what playlists? 2v2, 3v3, 4v4? or is 1v1 included? Because if it's team games you're diamond in and not 1v1, then I can totally understand. The tactics used in team games are far different than the ones in 1v1. The game is totally different, you just can't play it the same.

Being able to beat their tactics doesn't mean you are able to beat them... otherwise you wouldn't be in Platinum with 880 points.

It's oh so easy to watch replays and casts/streams where you get to see the game progress and say, wow the opponent is doing X, why isn't that ProGamer doing Y to counter it? In game performance matters a lot, scouting information needs to be processed very quickly and suitable counter measures planned immediately since you don't have infinite resources and timing is crucial in a "real time" strategy game.

That is the main point of this thread really, it's that people will beat their chests and tell others how to play based on what they would have done "IN HINDSIGHT". If you are a high level player playing against another high level player, you won't be able to just casually go about executing your game plan. The opponent will harass you thus offsetting the timings of your strategy, they will also play mind games, thus stuffing up your scouting information, they will wreak havoc on your crucial structures in order to throw off your build.

Any monkey can say, ProGamer A went 5 X, 6 Y and 12 Z, so for ProGamer B to counter it he can just use 14 A and 6 B's since I tested it out in unit tester and 14 A's and 6 B's destroys the former composition.

Don't be ignorant. You do not have enough information to make the assumptions about me that you are making.
Do you do the same thing when you're playing SC2, assume your enemy is doing something and react accordingly, or do you gather the information you need before making your attack?

Why don't you try actually reading my post that you are responding to?

Making assumptions again, slightly amusing. I am done with your ignorance though.

I'm done with you "assuming" I am "ignorant".

No one expands in gold league. I just don't know why.

Either 8 pool, 10 gate, or 3 rax. nothing else.

First push, hold off, get expo up. wait 5 mins, win. almost every game for me goes like that. (unless i lose to the push)

Will work hard to get to diamond. =)

Thank God I didn't miss this post. TY Saracen. I had the urge to write something like this, but hell I'm too lazy. It's about time someone brought attention to this.

This is just one of the reasons I tend to avoid the SC2 forums altogether now like so many others.

No one likes a cesspool of shit.

*

I see a lot of you continuing to miss the point. Perhaps you should read what is said after the blue.

The thing is there are some diamond players who think they are really good when they aren't. They know too few builds and don't respond well when another player who understands the game knows how to counter it with ease.

I repeat. There are two types of diamond players:

1. Knows a few builds, tries to win in the early game, don't have a backup plan in case plan A fails, suspect micro/macro and they don't respond well when countered.

2. Has tested several builds/studies the game, learns various counters to all kinds of strats with more frequent scouting (hard to catch off guard), more responsive and intuition (if player x does A, player y does B/C/D). These players place well in tournaments.

The SC2 forums are flooded with type A who think they are all-knowing when they are spreading false information more times than not and many forum veterans are turned off by it, hence they don't post and will continue to not post.

agree with everything said here, i mean BW was bad with iccup ranking but with SC2 is just an abomination, everyone who gets to plat and above thinks they know something about the game and can just start throwing stuff out and posting crap on the forum thinking their doing good for the community. Its really hard to filter through all the junk that these kinds of players spew out...

I agree. Using myself as an example, i'm in diamond league at the moment with around 500 pts, and i don't even know the full Protoss tech tree, and certainly don't know the other races at all. The only reason i can compete is my BW mechanics carrying over and how wary i am about cheese.
