After reading Boxer's mini biography into his pro-gaming life I felt it'd be cool to try and get better via playing some team melee games against my friends.
Only there doesn't seem to be a team melee mode for SC2 atm. At least in a fashion were 2 people will only spawn as one controlled base.
So I though I'd post a poll here seeing how the rest of the community feels about the lack of team melee in SC2. I know it's not the most significant problem to exist, but should it be something in the game? Or is it there and I'm just a crazy ol' bastard?
For those who voted "What's Team melee mode?", Team melee mode is were you can have several people (I think up to 4 in SC:BW) on one team playing at a time. What this means is you could have someone dedicated to micro, another to macro, another to sharing the info between the two, etc.
In a practical sense to a competitive player, this meant a player could play games against unnaturally strong "double opponents" via using team melee mode. By playing against an opponent who was strong in both micro and macro than yourself it made you a better player in the long run.

I think a macro/micro mod or UMS would be nicer. Personally, I've always felt them to be more fun, cooperative, and helpful.

game is too easy for two people

So why aren't you winning all the big tournaments and raking in the prize money?
On-topic. I'd love to see it in-game. I never actually knew you could do it until I watched the IdrA TLA, but it seems like it could be a load of fun. I'm sure there could be official uses for it, but not EVERYTHING in SC2 needs to cater to esports. It is a game afterall so we could use some of these more fun/non-serious game-types.

I might be wrong, but I don't think tournaments let you play with a teammate.

I'm all for this. My team had some great nights on BW playing 3v3 team melee. Admittedly, there were some things that were broken about it. Macro style TvP on any macro map (Colosseum, Andromeda, etc.) was pretty much impossible, because by the time Terran was ready to push, Protoss was at 250+ population... I remember one game on Fighting Spirit where my team took down a Terran push with nothing but Dragoons. Around 90, 100 of them.
I think SC2 would definitely have interesting games, because there are plenty of units that can benefit so much from full time attention, such as blink stalkers, phoenixes, void ray, reapers, hellions, banshees, vikings, mutas... ah, I'm coming up a little short on Zerg examples. It is my worst race. I do think that every race has enough to do that 2 players, and probably 3 in the mid to late game, wouldn't find any shortage of things to do.

I'd really love to play Micro\Macro in SC2. Sure, there's not as much to do with your APM if you're the Macro player, but that doesn't make it significantly less fun. Teaming up with a much better player on Macro while you play Micro can give you a chance to focus on battles with a larger army than your macro skills would normally allow. Plus, this game mode is well-suited to drunk and baked people.

it was always hard to get my friends to play team melee mode with me, but when i did get a chance to do it, it was pretty fun..
remember how you could pick all 3 races on one base? shit was whacky

Team melee is pretty fun. I'm personally content with the manual method (two micro players pick terran, kill one scv, load the rest and lift off), but adding something more automated would be OK.
|
Well you can easily make a team melee ums game, as you can already share units. It's not directly in your face in the game, but it is quite easily achievable.
|
Some of the most fun I've had playing this game are in 2v2's where I have been eliminated, but my ally is still alive and I micro his units to harass us back into the game.

Trying to bring back Team Melee to SC2 i've tried to made it feel as close as possible. I currently have problems with the UI so the Team Members will have the Mins/gas and Supply shown at the Mission briefing but: Now you can Play TeamMelee with up to 2 Friends! Play against the Computer or your friends, all races available in one Team! Create a game on Starcraft and search for those Maps:
Both are 6 Player Maps!! (to find them easy, look at the 6 Player Maps in the search results!)
'Team Melee Map Pack - Golgalath ravine' 'Team Melee Map Pack - City of Lare'
Author Coreyl, Mode: Team Melee
i try to implement some Blizzard Maps at times, will call them 'Team Melee Original-Mapname' or some sort of, watch out, post me bugs and comments (email during loading screen) or help me get this UI problem fixed (without resulting in duped Minerals etc.)
Maps have many Ressources! (i mean many!) so u 3 have 'nuf of them (currently only 3v3 supported, as this are 6 player maps i created, i'm not a genius at staredit but it will be fun for you playing against bots(recommend hard or above))
HAVE FUN AND ENJOY TEAM MELEE FEELING on SC2!

I miss this mode so much... spawning as a zerg drone with your allies being toss, building a zerg hatchery at some point and then find out you've covered the base area with creep, making your allies shout out in annoyance and destroy the little pet project that was your hatchery. Good times.

Just turn team control on in the top right corner
One person manages Macro, the other Micro

Props to making these SC2 maps, Coreyl. Like the OP, I was really intrigued reading about how Boxer would compensate for lack of really strong practice partners by practicing against 2 teammates acting as 1 "perfect" player.

Hey y'all, I made triggers & data for Team Melee, and it works wonderfully! You can play the maps I've already converted, or convert your own (it's open source!) right here.
