How do you position your hand on the keyboard?

I've only used middle and index fingers, and my pinky finger for the shift/ctrl key. I was watching some videos and the pros position their ring, middle and index fingers on the control keys (1, 2, and 3). With it you can easily reach the 5 and 6 numbers. I've been trying it, but it's hard to adapt; lost 3 games in a row just because I was slow. I'm not sure if it will benefit that much.

So, how do you do it?

depends how big your hands are. mine are tiny, very non-nada-esque

my pinky is for shift and control and A
then I use ring and middle and pointer to hit hotkeys
then middle and pointer for shortcuts depending on location.

It's weird. Every game it takes a while for my hand to 'settle' on the keyboard. The first few minutes or so I have my middle and index fingers jumping back and fourth from spamming S D and 4 5 (when I'm playing Z), when I know that it is more efficient to have your middle and index constantly up on the numbers, then use your ring/little finger on the s/d keys.

Later in the game, though, my hand tends to hover more over the hotkeys and I use all my fingers for a better level of control.

I put it like I'm playing an FPS game just because I've been doing that for years. Can't make my hand switch to anything better :/

DAy[9]'s mechanics podcast has an entire section about how to position you keyboard hand and mouse hand. I think you're doin it right, but it's basically whatever you feel the most comfortable with, and I don't think it is as important in SC2, since all the key are in the same general area of the keyboard, but it's still importan so check out the cast.

Thumb is on alt 99% of the time, pinky is on shift/control etc and my other three fingers are doing everything else :p

I'm left-handed, my thumb is almost always using ctrl and my palm rests slightly on the spacebar (without pressing it down)

I agree with other posters that playing FPS for a long time really affect your hand placement. My hand is just naturally in the WASD position. It took a long time to correct but thankfully, SC2's hotkey placement makes a lot more sense. No more having to hit P to micro mutas...or press S + U for ultras.

Pinky rests on shift, index through ring finger rest on Q,W,E and my thumb on space. Gives a nice range of motion.

I keep my fingers on the normal keys (asdf). I'll use the pinky for CTRL and the other 3 fingers for the numbers.

I'm wondering though, it seems like a lot of the pros use the arrow keys, which are waaay on the other side of the keyboard for me. I don't really use them much, but is it generally considered skillful to use those keys as well (when navigating?)

pinky - shift and ctrl
thumb - c for chrono, z for zealots; b,v for building
ring, middle, index - numbers and most of hotkeys

I don't think it's common practice for any high-level players to use the arrow keys at all.

I have seen a few videos of live tourneys in Korea where they do infact use the arrow keys.

They use their left hand. I think it is so they don't have to look at the mini map, and more importantly to keep the mouse centered.

If you boost the arrow key movement speed to 100% it only takes a few taps to get around.

I dunno, I don't use it though.

Holy crap....that is the exact position that my hand is in. I was reading the thread and put my left hand on the keyboard, then I saw your pic and looked down at my hand and it was identical.^^

I also pivot my hand at my wrist and can reach every key i need, as far as I can remember...

Now thinking about it, my hand does pivot, but it's not quite resting on the desk the whole time. I do lift up my wrist throughout the game to allow myself freer movement.

Funny thread here , but position on keyboard is imho quite important cause it affects playstyle a lot.

Same position here as you (pinky on SHIFT). But when you're switching your pinky finger to CTRL, it's kinda weird to reach the numbspots (1-3), with whatever finger you're using for that purpose.

Look at your pinky finger, it's kinda long (samewith me, big hands + long fingers :D), so you have to bent it if you want to reach the numbspots with the other fingers.
The problem: CTRL is even below SHIFT, so you have to bent the pinky even more (again to reach the numbspots with the other fingers). That's uncomfortable, at least for me and there is danger to glide away (in upper keyboard direction) with ur pinky if it's bent too much.
That's why I use the thumb of my left hand for both, SHIFT and CTRL (and ALT) + numbspots. What do you think about that?

Have to mention my ring finger is smaller than middle finger, so that might also be the reason for not reaching numbspot 1 with it, while being on CTRL with the pinky.

WASD

Once you go wasd it's hard to go back. Especially if you are still actively playing fps games.

I'm one of the WASD guys as well. I don't really know how else I'd position my hand though, my hands are pretty small, and if I need to reach the higher numbers or any letter on the right I have to move my hand all the way. There's no way I can strech unless I strech from pinky to thumb, which is really impractical.

Agreed. Lets you reach everything comfortably and more importantly, easily get your hand back in position due to that epic protrusion on the F key

Since I can touch type, ASDF (EDSF for FPSes, in a dark room you can type much easier that way + it gives you a lot more keys to bind for weapon switching). Seeing the pictures in the thread I'm starting to wonder if I should try to learn the QWE/123 stuff, because right now it's hard to reach the numbers and ctrl. Other option might be to switch caps lock to ctrl though, just like on Solaris/Unix boxes. <3
now how about that?

It's important to do what is comfortable, because everybody anatomy is different and if you screw up your wrist from strain you won't be playing much. But you should try to be as optimal as possible. Some people have better flexion than extension, so with long fingers you can often use your thumb (flexing) on the left control or alt and still reach many number keys. But with the shift + add option, you can use your pinky on shift as needed regardless of your anatomy. And you will have to use your pinky on the left shift to reach the higher numbers. The numbers on the far right are obviously calling for the right control and right shift. People with more fexion and less extension also benefit more from a wrist pad.

People with good extension (fingers bend "backwards/opposite of making a fist" and wrist bends up easier)can probably keep their pinky on the left shift/control and be comfortable though.

People who are extremely flexible in all areas can do whatever they want!

Brand new players might consider using the alternative key mappings Blizzard put in. That keeps everything on the left side. Personally having specials and worker options at the bottom (z, x, etc.), gateway and warpgate being the same key in this config (Blizzard fix this OK!), and years of playing otherwise has kept me from switching though.

Shift S D F

When I play FPS: I use "WADF" (F for crouch, V for walk) (ring finger does W and S, you can't go backwards while going forwards, right? ^^)

I am missing two fingers from each hand - born that way. I use my palm to hit the control button/space bar and do everything else with what you could call my pinky. Shift keys I have to hit the button with my thumb and do a stretch to hit the number keys. Funny enough I type faster then most people (80+ wpm), even with only two fingers on the keyboard with both hands.

I've never understood how people can do the pinky on control thing, that is just so awkward and hard to position for my hands. The middle part of my palm below the pinky is what rests on and presses the control key for me and my pinky is able to get the shift key.

Index on a for spamming attack move. xD It's what I used to do when I was bad so its stuck with me now. It's a lot of moving for my wrist for hotkeys and control groups, but it's all good.

I come from a competitive FPS background so I have I have pinky between shift/control, ring on a, middle on w, index on d, thumb on space. Totally suboptimal for SC2 :/

Pinky for ctrl and shift of course.

Index and middle finger for most things.

Ring finger sometimes for queens/scouting drone/overlords. Easy for me to swap from hatch on 5 (middle finger) to 4 (ring finger).

Used to 1a2a3a4a solely with my index finger. Now 1 (middle) a (index) works when I haven't made extra control groups to flank.

Like most zergs, I use middle finger on 5, pinky on s, ring finger on d, index on 6 or t or v, or whatever is needed. Pinky is used to hit z for zergling, Index for hydra. Ring for drone.

I shift my hand to the left and use pinky on shift when I'm in combat though.

I also have inject remapped to o, so that I macro my queens to be 0, then ring finger on 0, pinky hits o, index hits backspace, mouse is centered on screen then I click hatchery, then quickly pinky o to reselect queens, index backspace to switch bases again. This setup hurts a little in the early game but it pays itself off in the late game.

Probably has something to do with the shape of your hand and your keyboard. I tried resting my hand on control as you said, and not only is it awkward to press control that way on my laptop, but it also forces three of my other fingers all the way up beyond the F keys to my volume control. Not good for me at all.

middle finger S, index E, pinky shift, thumb space bar. Kind of awkward now that I look at it. I'm used to this set up because in the beginnin SC2 has scvs and probes on s/e respectively. As the game progresses though, my hand stretches out to the top 1-2-3, and my thumb on B.

i use pinky pretty much solely for control, and my thumb pretty much solely for alt (although my hand doesnt sit like that all the time with my thumb usually resting on the spacebar)

for everything else I use my other 3 fingers moving over the keyboard as required.

I've got pretty massive hands though so I can reach ctrl+8 (pinky and index finger) as my limit. I lose 9 and 0 sure but I can live with that.

I placed mine like caucasianasian since you don't have to move your hand anymore, all the hotkeys are on the left except for the f5-f8 location hotkeys. Which is really dumb, the fkeys are now impossible to reach. What's wrong with f2-f4?

I still have my hand positioned FPS style with pinky on ctrl, middle 3 fingers on a,w,d, and thumb on spacebar. I really need to shake off this habit.

Same here and I'm used to having my index finger resting on the F key.

I suppose this makes sense, if he wants to move the screen without moving his mouse to the edge so he can continue to micro in the center.

Do you have a link? I can't find it.

Bad habits from CS... ^_^

Pinky on CTRL/Shift, ring on A, middle on W, index on D. That's my natural hand position, so I always have to slightly move my hand to reach 1-9.

Although, I got used to let my thumb on B/V instead of space, so that's a step ahead.

To be honest, I still think the drag scroll in sc2 makes more sense, takes like ½ a sec to move the screen and gives you perfect control

I do what most people on this thread do, pinky finger, etc etc..

The difference is that people seem to be attacking the keyboard with the hand-arm in a straight position, while I hold my arm in a 45° position, almost from the side.

I am missing two fingers from each hand - born that way. I use my palm to hit the control button/space bar and do everything else with what you could call my pinky. Funny enough I type faster then most people (80+ wpm), even with only two fingers on the keyboard with both hands.

Really?

id say pics4proof but that might be a bit inappropriate...and weird.

I play protoss. Pinky on shift. Ring, middle, index on 2-4. Thumb on B. During combat i move my thumb from B to G where it can switch between G and F for Gaurdian/Force and back to B for inbase. Works perfectly for me. GG

WASD, but I also use grid key bindings, which to me feels more natural in this position.

The only thing you need to know is that using hotkeys and key binds is absolutely essential. Its completely irrelevant in my opinion for information on how other people position their hands. It's different strokes for different folks. The most effective way to position your hand on the keyboard is what you are comfortable with and the ability to all of your primary keys with ease. It also depends on how you bind your units and buildings. Which again is solely contingent upon your comfort zone. Find out what works for you, and stick with it. Good luck to you friend.

umm, i hotkey hatches to 4 and hit that with my index, S with my middle finger, D for drone with my index finger again, then as the game gets to that point i use my ring finger for Z and Q, and my pinky for setting control groups. that's pretty much it for my set hand position. i hit most other keys with my index or middle finger and it's always the same finger for the same key but there's no rhyme or reason to it. just muscle memory i guess.

I just play the game. I dont know my hand position because I never look at my hand. And changing your hand position won't make you better. Just play the game and your hand will adjust to how you play. Don't force it.
