It appears units now gain ranks with kills.
Protoss: 0-4 Kills - Disciple 4-9 - Mentor 10-14 - Instructor 15-19 - Master 20 - ??? - Executor
Terran: 0-4 Recruit 5-9 Corporal 10-14 Sergeant 15-19 Captain 20-?? Commander
Zerg: Predator 0-4 kills Slayer 5-9 kills Ravager 10-14 kills Assassin 15-19 kills Metamorph 20+ kills
At this point its unknown if it effects actual in-game damage or armor. Can anyone check?

Doesn't affect unit performance.

Maybe it will in single player.
|
its probably just for filler achievements...
|
I'd kill myself if it actually affected unit stats in multiplayer. Don't need any repeats of Supreme Commander experimentals thank you.
|
It's not a big deal, and doesn't affect unit statistics in any way. I have to say, though, it's satisfying on some level to see the lone survivng reaper of a raid with 23 kills get some kind of commendation for being a badass.
|
If you remember in BW all the Terran units had ranks
this is just a neat little detail with no game effect.
There should be an achievement for getting a worker to the 20 kill rank
|
I'm jumping on the "will have something to do with single player and or achievments later" train. If it upgrades the stats of the units in the future, I will rage.
|
As long as this is just for fun, and doesn't affect the multiplayer aspect, I'm all for it.

Zerg drones with +20 kills should transform into a unit capable of launching OP kamikaze critters at bases for psychological damage

I'm fairly certain this is possible with the editor. :D

1. Spawn broodlings with broodlord 2. Attack broodlings with your own units 3. ???? 4. metamorph hydralisk!

If it's anything like SC1's killcount, attacking your own units doesn't count. Maybe with allies, though...

Oh that's such a good idea :-) I always have deep feeling for my lone 20 kill goon. Sometimes, I even keep them to keep my base (completely useless, but veteran deserve some rest) because of the sentimental aspect of it.

There should be an achievement for getting a worker to the 20 kill rank signed ^^

certainly wont affect multiplayer gameplay, because if it does, then its not Starcraft anymore... would be Warcraft in the Space
|
never noticed this, but I like it as long as it doesn't affect unit performance in multiplayer. It would also be cool if maybe you could set units to display little Icons like "double kill" or "HOLY S!@#" when they "Rank up"
but ya, like the feature, even though gameplay wise it's useless.
|
All these seem to be cool ideas, expect for the Assassin Swarm is a swarm, no finesse here!
Thanks for the info and checking all this

Team3Arena I presume. Good times.

They should add +1 damage and Armor to a unit each rank it gains, would be pretty awesome.

Yeah, I second this. What's up with the assassin zerg?
I wouldn't mind to have some visual changes with rank ups either, just minor stuff. Like the schythe DT guy has a helmet (?) made out of hydralisk bones
|
Unit AI improves with rank, but also the unit sounds get more cynical

Haha, this is pretty much how I feel about this feature.

One might question how a lowly recruit came to be in command of a battlecruiser in the first place though...

Poor banelings, they'll never level up.

THIS IS NOT WARCRAFT IN SPACE.

Hope the zerg buildings have the kill count of the drones and want a Metamorph Hive Achievement too =)

THIS IS NOT WARCRAFT IN SPACE. IT'S MUCH MORE SOPHISTICATED!
I KNOW IT'S NOT 3D!
I for one cannot wait to see a Probe Executor...artificial intelligences have been discriminated against FAR too much in Protoss military leadership.

Time for my quest to get 20+ kills with a worker
This will be so FUN!
|
Cool to see they put a small thing like ranks back in.. there is never anything wrong with this!

I wonder if Stork does that sometimes or if it is only because we are hopeless newbies that we have this kind of sentimental feeling towrds our hero units.

They could have been more creative with the terran ranks. Recruit is a great rank 1 but then moving to two seemingly random enlisted ranks and then two officer ranks is uninspired and lazy. I think it would be more fun to have terran ranks move from Recruit to something like Hotshot to Ace ect...
|
The final rank for every race should just be Badass, or Baller. Also

I'm glad they added this tbh. Now players get more gratification by getting hero units, without them being "real" hero units like wc3.....god no...

They'll probably have an achievement called killer drone, where you have a metamorph ranked drone during a ladder match.
|
will propably be able to change unit stats while playing UMS.
|
It doesn't affect the unit's stats, but I'm sure it's a great addon to UMS maps

Or, if a person beat another person on good terms he'd just ask to let the worker kill a bunch of his guys

They should have more ranks than just 20 kills. I want some way to honour Ghosts that get 50+ kills from nuking :D

wait banshees and void rays arent hero units?

What would indeed be awesome is Veteran units gaining a small graphic improvement. A Zergling would grow a couple of larger/extra claws, Hydras perhaps get a bit bulkier or more spines. Marines get a bit customized armor, etc. No gameplay changes ofc but a little marker to make that hero Marine feel good about himself?

Aside from my personal aversions to this type of system, it's also just not balanced. Rank-up systems favor durable units over weaker ones. This could not only cause a racial imbalance in certain matchups, but it also would lean gameplay on an even heavier focus toward the Immortal/Roach/Marauder (which, being both hard-hitting and hard to kill, would rank up far more easily than many other units).

" Zerg: Predator 0-4 kills Slayer 5-9 kills Ravager 10-14 kills Assassin 15-19 kills Metamorph 20+ kills "
Wth, why is the weakest rank the most badass one?
And yeah I agree, assassin really doesnt fit

That would only make banshees a little OP And battlecruisers would never level just because they suck vs everything, I killed a cruiser with one viking earlier , just shoot move, shoot move, hero viking ftw!
