Does it seem like SC2 maps are smaller?

Maybe I am off here, but it feels to me that maps in SC2 are somewhat smaller than in SC1 when compared to unit move size and reference distances such as tank range and creep radius around hatchery. Some of the bases, especially on 1v1 maps seem really close together. You come out of your base, take two steps and you are at your opponent's front door. Anyone else have this feeling?

There seems to be a lot more chokes than big open spaces from the few maps I've seen.

A few maps, yes.

Steppes of War (I'm starting to not like this map) and Blistering Sands primarily.

EDIT: And Steppes would probably not feel so small if it wasn't for the mains being ENORMOUS.

I wonder if starcraft 2 allows really big maps.
Maybe they are so small, because the game would run slow.

So far no 3v3 or 4v4 right? Is there any "256x256" map, or equivalent?

it will probably end up being like warcraft 3 that you can unlock some of the area with a 3rd party editor

Map size probably has almost no impact on game speed. The number of units/particles is the variable that is most likely to slow the game down.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

They are smaller. Read the multiplayer preview at the official site to understand the direction they are trying to go with maps in general. I know it is showcasing 1vs1 maps, but even the 4vs4 maps seem to be designed with the same philosophy.

Will probably allow even bigger maps than in WC3 eventually, they don't want the editor to have a lot of limits after all.

Why are you using siege tank range as a reference when tanks have an even higher range in SC2?

I've noticed just from looking that while the maps in sc1 and 2 are the same/similar size, the ratio of passable to impassable terrain is a lot greater in sc2. That is to say, much more of the map is taken up by water and space. I think this is largely just a side-effect of blizzard wanting to show off swanky backgrounds. This will likely disappear as community map-making takes over.

I think the Maps are a bit small, but I also think that we shouldn't worry about Map's in SC2 at all, especially because SC2 is still in BETA.

The Mapmaking-Tools are gonna be awesome and there will be more than enough ppl that are interested in making new and exciting Maps, like in SC1. Also, the possibilities for new Maps are enriched by new stuff like the "Gold-Minerals", Watchtowers, those "barriers" you can't see, but walk through etc.

I think that the Betamaps aren't the Best and most interesting Map's we're gonna see in SC2 at all, so we just have to w8 and drink tee. ^^'

While that is the case, I am wary because Blizzard has a history of keeping really terrible maps in the ladder pool for ages and never changing them. Just look at SC1 and BW ladder map pool. And regardless of what the community designs, Blizzard ladder play will be limited to Blizzard ladder maps. Right now in BW iccup uses pro maps--but that will likely not be the case for Blizzard ladder. And their map design has really bad history.

idk, i feel like theyre bigger. especially the mains, its like there so much space in there.
but it probably has to do with the game being in 3D - messes with your perspective coming from a 2D game

That isn't fair at all, not even Blizzard thinks that their sc1 ladder means anything. The WC3 ladder do not have bad maps and that is what matters and there is nothing pointing at them being worse at it this time.

Also starcraft and sc2 maps are much easier to make good than wc3 maps so I think that the chances of them having a rotating map pool is quite large. And you can always thumb down the maps you don't like.

Yeah but us map makers are still waiting for said tools. *looks towards Irvine, California and raises left eyebrow while cocking head to the right*

I really like how iccup does it and you just know it wont be the same on Sc2.. how often do new maps come out for use in wc3 ladder? Is it like sc1 where you get a handful of maps every 3 months? <or whatever it is> if it is, awesome if not.. boo

As Klockan3 mentions, that is not a fair comparison at all. While we have the benefit of experience and hindsight, nobody knew how to balance maps properly back in 1998. Blizzard are hardly the only example of this, early KeSPA maps were really bad as well (and you can also find modern examples that are far from well balanced). So judging them based on the Blizzard ladder mappool from the early days of StarCraft is hardly fitting at all.

Plus, as Klockan3 also said, StarCraft maps are much easier to make compared to WC3 ones. So we can expect maps to change much more frequently.

Also, it is not like Blizzard does not recognise good maps. I mean, they use KeSPA-made maps for their own events (such as BlizzCon and WWI) as well.
