Does it seem like SC2 maps are smaller?

Steppes of War (I'm starting to not like this map) and Blistering Sands primarily. EDIT: And Steppes would probably not feel so small if it wasn't for the mains being ENORMOUS.

Maybe they are so small, because the game would run slow. So far no 3v3 or 4v4 right? Is there any "256x256" map, or equivalent?

The Mapmaking-Tools are gonna be awesome and there will be more than enough ppl that are interested in making new and exciting Maps, like in SC1. Also, the possibilities for new Maps are enriched by new stuff like the "Gold-Minerals", Watchtowers, those "barriers" you can't see, but walk through etc. I think that the Betamaps aren't the Best and most interesting Map's we're gonna see in SC2 at all, so we just have to w8 and drink tee. ^^'

Just look at SC1 and BW ladder map pool. And regardless of what the community designs, Blizzard ladder play will be limited to Blizzard ladder maps. Right now in BW iccup uses pro maps--but that will likely not be the case for Blizzard ladder. And their map design has really bad history.

but it probably has to do with the game being in 3D - messes with your perspective coming from a 2D game

Just look at SC1 and BW ladder map pool. That isn't fair at all, not even Blizzard thinks that their sc1 ladder means anything. The WC3 ladder do not have bad maps and that is what matters and there is nothing pointing at them being worse at it this time. Also starcraft and sc2 maps are much easier to make good than wc3 maps so I think that the chances of them having a rotating map pool is quite large. And you can always thumb down the maps you don't like.

Right now in BW iccup uses pro maps--but that will likely not be the case for Blizzard ladder. And their map design has really bad history. As Klockan3 mentions, that is not a fair comparison at all. While we have the benefit of experience and hindsight, nobody knew how to balance maps properly back in 1998. Blizzard are hardly the only example of this, early KeSPA maps were really bad as well (and you can also find modern examples that are far from well balanced). So judging them based on the Blizzard ladder mappool from the early days of StarCraft is hardly fitting at all. Plus, as Klockan3 also said, StarCraft maps are much easier to make compared to WC3 ones. So we can expect maps to change much more frequently. Also, it is not like Blizzard does not recognise good maps. I mean, they use KeSPA-made maps for their own events (such as BlizzCon and WWI) as well.
