I helped look through for one of the days, and there are a lot of replays and pretty much all of them are longer than 30 minutes. In team games, if you don't do a early timing push (which is very hard with the funday constraints) it's turtle city and so you get a lot of boring replays with a 2 minute 'awesome!!!11' fight at the end.
I think FFA and team games are a bad idea, day9 should either put a time limit on it or stick to 1v1.
...really? One terran pushing with marines, and another with Marauders, is a bad strategy for 2v2? Or zealot/sentry from one player, and stalker from another?
Simply put, SC2 replay files have, in some form or another, the IDs of the people who played them. I'm sure there is an automated way to look up somebody's rating. Should be possible to write a simple check to figure out the ratings of everybody who participated in a game without watching it. If your team game consists of high-ranked people, there will probably not be 25 minutes of boring. The odds of seeing a decent/clever strategy increase. Probably possible to filter out a whole ton of the replays based on the people involved being just bad.
Now, I understand that Day9 wants to appeal to all audiences, not just people who like to see good play. But it seems like there should be a way to save you reviewers the trouble.
In #208 with djwheat, did Day9 sort of remind you of the old spice guy? "Look at your base, now look at me. Now look at your army. Does your army look like mine? It could look like mine if you use DayJ brand Starcraft. I'm on a computer."
Moar like : "Hello bronze players, look at your base, now back to mine, now back at your base, now back to mine. Sadly, your base isn't mine, but if you stopped playing like a bronze level and started using Day[J] advice, it could look like it's mine. Look up, back at the monitor, where are you? You're on a map, with the army your army could look like. What's on your screen? Back to me, I have it, it's a tab with the APM you love. Look again, the APM is now minerals. Anything is possible when you're playing like Day[J] and not a bronze level. I'm on a computer."
Oh and Day9 is awesome.
Damn man, I started laughing hysterically at this at work. My manager thought I was having a heart attack (!).
This should be recorded and be made the intro for Day[9]'s shows. Hilarity guaranteed.

I thought of just the same thing! If he wanted to incorporate such a scheme I'm sure he'd find people willing to help him out with that script. There probably should still be a bronze - platinum game in each funday to allow that audience to participate.
Just wanted to emphasize how great I thought the 208th daily was! Normally in replays and their like, you see WHAT to do, how good micro looks etc. During this live coacing(poor wheat, what stress that must be!), you focused a lot on how to physically be a better gamer - making hands do the work while watching different things. Now Im not a fantasic player(yet :b) and my regular apm is about 70ish. After following the instructions of splitting your attention, and practicing it a bit, my apm increased by about 25, to approximately a hundred. The monday was.... :b fun! Glad you're truly making me a better gamer, day (Even though the live daily is a at 4:00 am in Denmark :-/ - ever thought about moving to Copenhagen? :o )
There are more videos on pages 6 and 7. If Day[9] had access to a minimap movie, obviously on x8, he could quickly assess how much time each player spent doing nothing. This of course requires some screen cap software and an upload to Youtube or some similar site.
Another alternative to recording a video would be taking a screenshot, with the game timer on, every minute of the replay. Screen caps are obviously built into the sc2 engine, so everyone is capable. You would then go into Paint, or whatever image program you have (Gimp, Photoshop) and crop the image to just the minimap and timer. If Day wanted, you could also include a shot of the resources tab. Then you would either submit a zipped folder with those images, or make a gif.
The other benefit of such a system would be an extra step required to submit. That would (hopefully) have the secondary effect of discouraging people from submitting terrible replays, because they wouldn't be bothered to do this extra step. After watching the most recent Daily, I really doubt many people even watch the replay again, they just play the game then submit.
This way, he could see two sides of the map getting more colorful for 28 screens, movement for 2 screens, then it would reset to the original start positions. Obviously a game to skip.
Awwwwww mannnnnn, just watched 209 and practically cried to myself lols, he was talking about how to wanted to see a spine crawler rush at like 15 or w/e not turtling, and the game I submitted was practically that, proxy hatching into spine crawler pushing baby
sorry to post this as it is probably hidden within those 700 pages but:
how can i switch from progressive to rtmp on days blip page?
so that i can jump forwards or backwards as i like sometimes i get a popup bar saying i could switch but there is no button and no info on how to do it yourself (
What if the day 9 review minions recorded the 1-2 minutes of awesomeness. Or, ask the players themselves to provide a fraps/recording instead of a replay.
Instead of commenting on 2-3 10-40 minute replays during a daily day9 could highlight 4-8 different games. Or perhaps do 1-2 full games with normal commentary, but have a montage of cool moments that the minions prepare.
I don't know if i should admit to this but I happen to be Kowai. I just watched the episode this morning with my girlfriend and we were cracking up. (And of course I was also twiddling her hair).
The only thing I can never forgive is playing Celine Dion, I happen to be your age Day[9] but having an older sister you cannot IMAGINE how Celine Dion has traumatized my wee teenage years.
Now (besides the fact that I was humming it on my way to work) whenever I see a floating command center burning up I'll hear that cursed sound track! >D
Oh and as for disclaimers, the popcorn popping banshee was waiting for cloak (And its soul mate) that I did start but managed to cancel 3 seconds before finishing to move my star port to the reactor for medivacs a not so great strategy.
Once again much love for picking our replay and making it so entertaining.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that my girlfriend also is a math major and happens to have the exact same attitude to adding numbers.
Oh and I can throw the replay up somewhere when I get home from work if there is interest although I don't think it really is the same without the accompanying music.

Got a great giggle out of this and thought I would just point to the youtube video of the old spice commercial to the people who haven't seen the reference.
