During beta, the "zerglot" achievement got a lot of discussion, because people were slightly unclear as to the exact mechanics of how to use the Neural Parasite ability on the Infestor to get this achievement.
I worked through it tonight, and thought people might appreciate a quick guide. Even if the achievement itself is not particularly interesting to you, the mechanics might inspire more innovative use of the Infestor in the right hands.
I've enclosed the guide in "spoiler" tags in case you're committed to figuring it out yourself.
+ Show Spoiler +1) Create a custom game 1v1 melee game vs. the AI, player plays Zerg, computer plays Protoss. It's fine if the AI is set to "Very Easy." + Show Spoiler +2) Use your favorite zergling opening. I elected to go for a 14 pool with double gas, just to get the gas needed for infestors a bit faster. I also elected to train zergling speed early, just to make the process go a little faster. + Show Spoiler +3) Make a bunch of zerglings. These will be used to clear out the Protoss base in preparation for building your own replacement base. Don't forget to train lair once you have a queen out. + Show Spoiler +4) Remember, of course, to build an infestation pit. + Show Spoiler +5) With your zerglings, clear out any combat units in the AI's base, and kill all the pylons. This will reduce the amount of re-clearing that you'll have to do later. Make sure not to kill probes or touch the assimilators just yet. Now would also be a good time to make some infestors and rally them to the front of the Protoss base. + Show Spoiler +6) Research Neural Parasite on your infestation pit. + Show Spoiler +7) Once the research is complete, use Neural Parasite on a convenient probe. + Show Spoiler +8) Construct a nexus, and release and kill the probe. + Show Spoiler +9) Then clear out the rest of the base with your zerglings. (It's easiest to pull the zerglings back before they kill the last structure. The computer will surrender and say "gg." Click "no." + Show Spoiler +10) Make a friendly probe with your new friendly nexus, chrono-boosting if you like, and use the proble to create a pylon... + Show Spoiler +11) ... then a gateway... + Show Spoiler +12) and once the gateway finishes, build a zealot. + Show Spoiler +13) Enjoy your new achievement. + Show Spoiler +

To make it even simpler, you can also get this achievement in a custom game vs. a friend
|
Absolutely! Ideally your friend can make one probe and stop there, and no need for zerglings.
Edit: It's also been pointed out to me that you can have a 2v2 partner playing Protoss give you unit control and get the achievement that way. However, since part of my goal was to demonstrate a little bit about how constructing buildings with Neural Parasite works within the game, I figured it was worth describing doing it solo!
|
It was "unlcear" during the beta mostly because it was bugged. I did it several times, I even upgraded warp gates and warped in a zealot, just in case, but I did not receive the achievement(during the beta).

lololol (haha nice name) I was referring to posts on here that were suggesting a need to serially NP probes, by people who didn't seem to get that everything made by a nexus or its probes would be allied. Maybe it was clear to most. Nevertheless, I hope some will find this guide useful one way or another.
|
The easiest way to do this is to have your protoss ally leave the game so you gain control of his units and buildings. Produce zealot. Profit.
I was shocked when my buddy picked up the achievement after I exited the game.
EDIT: Sorry didn't read all the way through the thread until after I posted -- I didn't realize this solution had come up.
|
You can even do this in a 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, etc Just neural parasite an ally's probe and build your own nexus. But I think it's awesomeist if you do it in a ranked 1v1
|
I got this laddering 2v2, ZP vs something. My teammate left the game, then I just made some zealots from his gateways. So the same way as VonLego suggested. Maybe it's even possible to do if your partner gives you control during the match without leaving, not sure
edit: or I can read the whole thread...

This would be fun to do in an FFA. Take out 1 dude but start teching thru protoss as well as zerg and confuse the crap out of the other two people :D

You can take all of the combat achievements except for the ones under "League", the repair friendly building one (I think) and the save 8 burning terran structures by playing 1on1 vs the AI. Clicking the actual "Play vs AI" button doesn't work, you need to custom game it.
2v2, 3v3, 4v4 Co-op counts as league games, don't ask me why. You can party up with a friend and start a 2v2 co-op game to get the league achievements pretty easy. There's a couple of them that are really hard to get versus the AI (mainly kill 5 changelings and destroy a fully loaded transport), those are pretty easy in the 1v1 ladder though.
Kind of offtopic but meh
EDIT: All of the repair/heal/regenerate hp/shields on a unit achievements can't have friendly fire involved, it's pretty easy to take them by getting the opponent to create some sort of static defence and then abusing that.

I'm trying to get mine to work as a sig. Are sig pictures disabled on tl?
Edit: Oops, i how did i get back into this thread. Sorry this is not relevant whatsoever. I just typed this in the wrong window, have a couple of different tl threads up on my compy :S

i was actually playin a 2v2 with my friend ( i was protoss he was zerg), i dropped out of the game and he took control of my stuff. he then warped in a zealot and got the achievement xD
|
Baseline VERY easy way is to just go vs a very easy protoss comp in a custom map, rush with zerglings and kill everything but 1 building and a probe or 2, then NP the probe, build a nexus build a probe, pylon gateway zealot.
This achiev is barely worth a guide. The one's that I'm stuck on are the regen 500 shields on a single unit and 500 life on a roach. They keep getting stuck, even though I do no friendly fire. Best unit I've found for the shields is the mothership, as you can take 300-500 or so damage, back out regen, and go in for 150-250 damage, back out again and get it, but every time I do this, the achiev stops at about 300...

Easiest to do against computer or friend.
Sickest to do in an opponents face, if he's still there.
|
wow nice !!!
just did it, did fast zerglings, killed the only zelots on the map, killed all the buildings except the gazer, left the probes alone, kill the nexus they tried to rebuild, they had no money and i didn't accept the surrender option. i had all the time needed to do the zerg part of the mission until the 1st zelots out.
thanks for the trick

Nice effort though simply saying play 1v1 vs a very easy computer and using Neural parasite on a probe is enough really. Funny thing though is when I did this vs the computer I built the Nexus in their base and the computer gave up then, he still had probes and buildings I guess he just didn't want to get BMed lol.
|
Can't you just play with a friend? I completed all of the Melee achievements in 2 games lol.
|
do you even need a nexus? i think you can just mind control one probe, build pylon gateway zealot and you're done? thats actually not that hard at all, just focus down the protoss ai's fighting forces and a couple of buildings maybe, but keep some of its probes alive to "use" them.

You are forgetting one major prerequisite, you must have a Nexus to build a Gateway.
Anyway -- Just finished it, I would love to see more Easy-Achievement guides for Hard Mode missions for example, there were a few I found on TL that had ways to beat Hard Mode missions in minutes, could anyone find some more of those for me? People on TL found ways to exploit the terrain to gain an advantage and beat the mission quicker than ever expected -- I believe even by blizzard =)
Thanks!

i don't know if that is indeed a prerequisite, thats why i asked ;D
