So i'll shift this to another topic. Fellow TL'rs from the UK or MUtd supporters, how have the first few days of amorim been?

I saw a tie and a 3-2 win which is not brilliant but it might still be too early to expect anything at all. How are the media and the players reacting?

Not sure about the players but the consensus, as always with new Man U managers, is that he'll need alot of time to sort out all the problems.

People seem quite impressed by the man, what snippets have emerged from the dressing room say he’s a more engaging presence who communicates his ideas better than Ten Haag

The downside seems to be that United don’t really obviously have the personnel to play his preferred style, certainly not right away. So there’ll probably be some growing pains there, either he’ll stick with it and players adjust over time, or they’ll have to wait for some new faces to do that, or he might have to try playing a different system.

It’ll be interesting anyway!

I imagine the fans will give him a bit of time, United are miles off the big boys at the minute and have been pretty dysfunctional for a while.

That does not surprise me. Ten Hag is not very strong in communication in Dutch let alone English.

Ok thank you for the insight.

Hope he gets some success there. There has been a while since we have a top tier manager from PT in EPL.

Could VAR be fixed if the time they get to challenge/confirm a decision is limited? E.g. if not within 60 seconds then the on field decision stands. Southampton vs Brighton Yesterday took 4 minutes for a controversial decision

For me that decision was wrong too, i say its a goal, i don't get how a guy flicking out his leg after a player has tackled in front of him is interfering with play. Could be huge for Southampton as well, even the top 4 race as well with Brighton flying getting 1 point extra.

Justin Kluivert has become the first premier league player to score a hat trick of penalties.

And if you had Evanilsen in FPL, he got points for 3 assists because he "won" all 3 penalties

I also believe Evanilson was the first to win 3 too, in the Premier League era anyway

All time in English football Kluivert is like the 4th or 5th to get a hat trick of pens, not bad for trivia nerds!

God I want this to keep going on forever. No one wake me up from this dream.

2-0 RMA
2-0 City

9 points clear at the top, and top of both tables.

I’ll give the Pool some credit for sure, but man both Real and Man City were also really off it as well.

I may reappraise my previously stated opinion, I thought the title in England would be more open because I didn’t see a side being consistent enough to put up a points tally in the high 80s thru 90s, Liverpool are looking capable of that.

I could see Arsenal, or City matching Liverpool’s pace or slightly closing in but I wonder if the gap is already getting a bit big.

That period where Arsenal kept getting players sent off for kicking the ball away, and having Odegaard out of action might already have seen Liverpool pull out too big a gap. Indeed when they played, Arsenal shaded it and probably should have won, but didn’t

Agreed that both sides look really poor right now, but I think it still shows that we can put on a performance and dominate them. That's what was important to me. If we were shakey or weak against them, then sure I'd probably say that we don't look great and that we can be expected to drop points. But we have been dominant against both. Real tests later will be Chelsea away and Arsenal at home later in the season.

That's how you win leagues. Be strong when the rest of the best are faltering. And you still have to win those games without getting dragged down.
Imagine either Real or City scored first here. They would have startet believing! Imagine they actually got a point from this.
Kudos to Liverpool and Slot for owning this season and shutting the other big teams down

Liverpool beating City at home is not so special but Liverpool beating Real is something that hasnt happened for many many years.

Extraordinary achievement!

On a more serious note, how much would you say it's due to luck? Any special instances in mind?

Very solid team all around with a lot of young guns who play out of their minds this season.
Omar Mamoush (25) is on a roll, Hugo Ekitike (22) is incredible hard to stop. That combined with a Hugo Larrson (20) who can play on a Cole Palmer level, rounded out with decent defending (one guy to watch is Nathaniel Brown, 21) and very good goaltending by veteran Kevin Trapp

A reference that’s always appreciated! I think they’ve been meriting their lofty position, but maybe a tad fortunate that the gap is quite so big.

A degree of luck is partly why football is so popular after all, it’s a low-scoring game with huge weight on individual goals. It’s why teams multiple divisions below another can still spring an upset.

I’m not a great believer in the idea that luck balances out over a season, when things happen is really crucial too because it affects psychology and momentum. Which I think we’re seeing already in the Prem.

A few small factors:
1. Fixture list. Slott got as kind an introduction to the Premier League as you can get. This helped him hit the ground running and getting that buy-in from players and supporter alike, and now they’re riding that momentum and confidence in those harder fixtures. Perhaps they’d have hit the ground running regardless, but I think it’s plausible if they had a really rough opening set of fixtures that they drop a few points and they don’t build quite the head of steam they currently have

2. Arsenal. Seemingly the only team in the league that actually get folks sent off for kicking balls away and dropped a few points. Odegaard missing was huge for them too. I don’t think they’d necessarily be top of the league or anything, but I think they’d be within touching distance.

3. Man City. Even early on they weren’t at their best, they’ve fallen off a cliff since they lost Rodri, their most important player. Unlike Arsenal the past two seasons, it’s increasingly looking like Liverpool don’t have to contend with a Man City on, or close to their A game. That’s one less problem for Liverpool to deal with, but it’s not really a variable they’re controlling.

It’s not a diss on Liverpool incidentally, outside of a handful of exceptions there’s rarely a champion at the very top level good enough compared to the competition that luck doesn’t really factor. You have to be resilient enough to ride out misfortune, and ruthless enough to capitalise when it’s in your favour.

My beloved Inter for example needed to weather a Barcelona storm with 10 men for like 70 minutes en route to winning the Champion’s League. I mean if that game was played simultaneously in alternate realities we probably lose 90% of the time.

Like I’ve been impressed with Liverpool too, but I think many a star is also aligning for them

I think we've been the best team in the world so far, so being top of the table is fair, but agree that 9 points ahead is definitely down to a bit of luck. Arsenal dropped a few points without Odegaard, City have been lacking naturally. And agree that our fixture list was during a period where we did look a little bit nervous but we've grown into the powerhouse we are now. Imagine having Madird or City as the first few games of the season compared to 1/3 of the way in, we might've drawn or lost to them and been only top by a few points, maybe even not even top considering we may lose some games like the one against Southampton or drawn against some weaker sides. And while we've had some injuries to players, none of them have been super crucial players where we have resilient backups (Ali -> Kell, Trent -> Bradley, Jota -> Nunez/Diaz false 9). We've been very lucky to not pick up an injury on guys like VVD, Salah, or god forbid Gravenberch picks up an injury since we don't have a true replacement for what Gravy does for our team. But considering how abysmal injury record last season, I'm just going to say that we deserve a break from it for once. And it's not like we've been uninjured too, we still have a reasonable list of injuries.
