Alisson Becker's imminent return from injury means Caoimhin Kelleher's latest run in the Liverpool first team could be over.

Does anyone understand why Liverpool bought a goalkeeper? Kelleher has been immense for Liverpool all the time

Kelleher understandably doesn't want to be backup for Alisson anymore. He can easily be first keeper for a mid table PL team. Alisson is 32 now, so he might have 3-5 more years at the highest level.

Kell has been voicing that he wants to be a first choice keeper for a while now. the thing is, Alisson always gets injured for a period of time every season so Kell typically sees a good chunk of EPL and UCL games, on top of also featuring in the cups for the first few rounds. Still, he's way too good to be a 2nd choice keeper and I don't blame him for wanting to leave. Mamar is going to need a couple more years to be ready as the first choice, so I think that because Kell wants to leave, and Mamar is going to be getting some prep in the EPL/UCL before becoming full-time first choice keeper over Ali, we'll keep Ali on for another 3 years before moving on to Mamar.

Mamar's biggest weakness is that he isn't great with the ball at his feet, but in terms of raw shot stopping, he's one of the best (as good or even maybe better than Ali). So he probably needs some mentorship from Ali to shift his focus from just pure shot stopping to a more distributive keeper. Only time will tell if he can adapt his game to that.

I love Alisson and hes prolly still the best or at least top3 gk in the world but wouldnt it make sense for the future to just invest and trust in Kelleher and let alisson go?

Not when Ali has at least 3 years of being one of the best GKs in the world. Kell is a great shot stopper like Ali, but still not as good with the ball at his feet. We're hoping to develop Mamar into another Ali since he's younger and Kell wants to be first team now, while Mamar is ok with being backup to Alisson and learning from him. It's just what the players want.

I would agree more if there was more points to it. Use it straight up as qualifiers for Euros, revamp if needs be and make the qualification process take in the nations league.

I get why they do it, but its still extra internationals with "not much point" to it and that drives me mad.

You can’t make it form a qualification process without completely doing away with its strengths, namely A tier nations play A, B versus B etc.

The only way you could conceivably do that without adding a ton of games to qualification is to use it as a pre-qualifier, for seeding for the big boys, and to eliminate a pot.

You’re also from a big footballing nation, and I don’t know about wider perception from other big ones on the continent, but I think from what I’ve heard the English are a bit more cynical anyway. Even amongst those big boys I’ve heard it’s been more positively perceived elsewhere.

Especially with the expanded Euros the big nations have to really fuck up not to qualify, but for everyone else the chance at play off spots etc are very meaningful prizes to dangle.

This cycle it’s been pretty good for the other home nations. Scotland had a demoralisingly bad run results wise, but they were playing teams a level above them based on past results and that’s good preparation. Northern Ireland had a great wee campaign versus teams roughly on our level, and we’ll see how we do stepping up. Wales are still decently placed in their group with pretty comparable teams to themselves.

True, hope it can be done though i would like to see it work that way somehow, be great if teams from league D would get a chance at a playoff game or something.

That's sort of how I feel about nation's league too. Obviously, all the best players are mostly coming from the best nations who don't want to play in Nation's league and only serves to create extra fatigue on those players. But everyone else loves Nation's league because it provides meaningful games for their squads to get experience and also try to push up to play the big boys.

Is it really that surprising? I think we all predicted City to falter after Rodri's injury. Credit to City for actually surviving the first few weeks

no I am not taking credit here... Rodri is a beast and has covered City's weaknesses for years, losing him would hurt anyone

I expected City to become more inconsistent and lose some games after Rodri's injury.

But five losses in a row? This is the first time in Pep's managerial career, and I don't think anyone saw that coming.

I guess it shows how good Kovacic has been in his absence.
Its still a shock result, after 52 unbeaten at home in the EPL, losing 0-4.

City struggling a bit in Rodri’s absence isn’t really all that surprising, but consistently losing and being absolutely battered by Spurs is, at home

Not picking on Spurs in terms of the surprise I mean City just haven’t got absolutely battered in a Prem game score line wise for quite some time.

I’d expected them to win a bit less, but still mostly win, even if the games were tight. Instead they’ve lost 5 on the bounce and both Sporting and Spurs have really done a number on them.

Gloating, long may this continue!

Pep's tactics only work when he has better players than everyone else. When he has the same quality to work with he's mediocre

Best coach my arse!

5 loss streak is wild, and its not going to stop, they have severe amount of injuries and no Rodri, but still, they are being battered every game...next up...Liverpool lol

Liverpool win that and titles done, Arsenal not even looking that good anymore either, they look very beatable as Rice has a broken toe and is not taking rest to fix it.

Arsenal were pretty great today to be fair. Odegaard was absolutely fantastic

Liverpool have started like a train, but so did Arsenal the first year they seriously challenged City. It can be dropping the odd point here or there, or a 3 game losing streak but these things can happen.

I think Liverpool look very good, but I don’t think they’re quite as good as some of those peak Pep sides who could seemingly pump out 10+ game winning runs when required, so I don’t know if they can sustain this kind of pace.

Whoever wins I think it’ll be a lower winning total than we’ve seen for quite a few years. Should be fun though!

City going from 3-0 with 15 minutes to go to 3-3 vs Feyenoord on home field is one of the most shocking things I've ever witnessed in football, even accounting for City's shitty form.
