Are United really ever that good though?

I guess the Ole era had some moments where they put up amusing results at least, but after that I can't remember anything particular. Ten Hag did win two cups though, so maybe there's some good matches in there.

Fair, but United are just a joke of a club at this point. They’ve swapped absentee billionaires for an actively involved one in Ratcliffe and he’s shit.

The various other clubs he’s involved with aren’t thriving. Ineos took over the Grand Tour winning machine that was Team Sky and haven’t delivered a winner since.

Doesn’t know what he’s doing and is a tax exile cunt to boot

Since he’s come in, let’s not mention the outlay on players

- He extended Erik Ten Haag’s contract, only to sack him (for more money)
- Chased Dan Ashworth at a decent expense for fucking forever and sacked him after 5 months
- Demanded pleb employees abandon working from home arrangements
- Sacked a bunch of low-level employees to cut costs. Costs that would have been covered by like, a single good decision at his end such as not extending Ten Haag’s contract, or chasing Dan Ashworth only to sack him after 5 months.

He’s worse than the Glazers, easily. It’s not even that close.

At least they didn’t really give a shit as long as United were profitable. This guy has even worse judgement, and he turfs out the fucking decades long tea lady to shave off a few bob.

It’s a fucking joke and United are currently a really bloody detestable club with it

Yeah, to be clear I'm not really trying to argue much for Utd here, more just entertaining the though a bit. Spurs definitely feel more like the glass cannon that can crush teams or break apart depending on the day.

Out of other teams, at least Nottingham Forest seems like a team that can either fold over in the first 30 minutes or make it a really cumbersome evening even for the top teams. Unlikely they'll ever really destroy the opposition though, just squeeze out surprising results.

if you look at each individual player's peaks and a very small handful of games when united has actually really played well, then yeah i would say united's theoretical peak is high enough to compete with any top team. it just so happens that in reality we are closer to showing bottom level form more consistently than top level form

TIL that in the k-league this year, a team comprised of players doing their military service got 3rd in the table. they have a very limited pool of players that they can select from (only players who are fulfilling their military service) and can't sign any foreign players due to their status as a military team. 3rd would have been enough for them to play in the champions league but because they are a military team, they can't participate in it.

(also because the military service is two years, squads will pretty much rotate every season making forming chemistry incredibly difficult)

That’s pretty interesting, why are military teams banned from competing in the Asian Champion’s League?

i'm sure evilfatsh1t can give a more accurate answer but my basic understanding is that if you're in the middle of military service you aren't allowed to leave the country so it makes it impossible to play overseas matches

Oh for sure, I was just positing the question more for teams that are consistently bouncing between high highs and low lows. For me Spurs I can be blown away impressed, or they’re shit, or anything in between.

Thank fuck I don’t support them as my brother does, that must be an emotional roller-coaster.

United do have potential but it’s hard to see it actualising anytime soon. I find Amorim impressive but I would have waited until the summer, also it woulda been nice to see him see out the season there.

They’re kinda throwing him in with a demoralised squad, but also a squad that on paper has few players who fit his preferred (indeed only one he’s really used) system.

Maybe it works out OK though. But he needs a few Gravenberchs, to nick an observation from a podcast I was listening to earlier. Klopp hadn’t really got the best out of him, folks were worrying that Liverpool didn’t have a real 6 outside of Endo, but Slott managed to unlock Gravenberch as a real livewire in that role in a manner I think few expected.

Issue United have is outside of transfers Amorim realistically either has to abandon his signature formation he’s always used, or he needs to get multiple players to excel in roles they haven’t historically played. Diallo has looked a promising wingback project in games I’ve seen, so that’s a positive.

But on the flip side you’ve Rashford or Garnacho who, form fluctuations aside have shown they’re pretty good wide players in a 4-4-3, but Amorim doesn’t play that way. So either they’ve got to learn how to play as more of an inside 10, or perhaps in Rashford’s case he’s an option at 9. He’s had the odd good game there but he’s clearly best as the left of a forward three.

As a neutral I think United are terribly run but kiddo supports them so I can’t be too negative! I think Amorim is impressive based on some of Sporting’s statement European results, and also just in press conferences. Ten Haag was such a bad communicator even in press duties i sorta struggled to see him being a good motivator behind the scenes, but Amorim much less so.

David Coote's been officially sacked by PGMOL.

FA's investigation into aggravated breach of conduct is ongoing. Same with the powder and yellow card allegations (both of which grain of salt)

actually its because sangmu (the teams name) isnt officially a professional club. sangmu is officially a military club that has been granted permission to participate in the korean professional league, however the afc requires the club to be a professional club for participation in the champions league, and sangmu can only achieve that if they no longer affiliate themselves with the korean military, which obviously isnt going to happen

Yeah his position became untenable. Still feel pretty bad for the guy, it’s not like he was exposed by some ethical whistleblower it was by people he seemingly felt were friendly who sat on the vids and drip fed them out of malice or seeking money.

Hopefully the investigation will at least show that he wasn’t influenced by some of the feelings he showed in these videos and that he reffed them fairly.

He would salvage a bit of his reputation for one. From a competitive integrity standpoint it’s also a more desirable outcome. Lastly my god fans wouldn’t shut up about it if the opposite were true and demand titles be swapped, or that they should come with asterixes

my gut feeling was it was the coke snorting that probably got him sacked rather than the klopp video. bit harsh to sack a ref for having an opinion in private

No investigations could ever show him being biased or non-biased or how do you think that would work?

The PGMOL statement is on the EPL website.

"Following a thorough investigation into his conduct" and "actions found to be a serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract" are the main points I took away from it, which don't specify what was investigated or what actions were in breach. I would guess a combination.

He might still be up for an aggravated breach of the FA's misconduct breach if they find him to have been racist, but I would presume that would be unlikely. The alleged planned yellow card is also being investigated by the FA but there is no evidence I've seen so far

The coke video had one of FIFA/UEFA also suspend him if memory serves.

There was another leak of texts where he appeared to hint that he’d be willing to book a player or something on request. I didn’t read this, was on a podcast so they were discussing it, can’t recall if it was on some dating app trying to impress a lass acting the big man, or he got catfished, or if it wasn’t dating related at all.

Either way, bit rough. Someone either saw others were selling what they had on him and they got in on the act, or folks had been setting traps for the lad. I’ve never been clear if all these stories leaked from the same people or different groups.

Anyway I think it was a case of just too many such stories, camels’ backs and straws and all that.

I might be wrong, but I think society in general and even football are a bit more understanding of drugs, errors in judgement and addiction. If it was solely the coke video I think he probably would have been suspended, given public support by his profession and had to attend rehab or addiction counselling.

But on top of that you’ve numerous examples that caused his professional impartiality and general professionalism to be called into question, I just couldn’t see a way back with everything combined.

Good old-fashioned re-refereeing of games. Establish some kind of baseline for his average performance and correctness of calls, then look for suspicious outliers.

This is part of what they do in match fixing investigations to determine who’s actually fixing games, and who might just be unfortunate to be associated with suspicion.

In Coote’s case, it’s a bit moot as he’s already been fired for an untenable position based on public perception. If clubs wanted to bring a case that their league position and thus financial position was potentially impacted by Coote though, then they’d have to bring some evidence of that kind, or the Prem/PGMOL would need counter-evidence

But does that work when he knows he is under investigation? Wont he just put in bad calls in all his matches so his average performance will be close to his fixed games?

my gut feeling was it was the coke snorting that probably got him sacked rather than the klopp video. bit harsh to sack a ref for having an opinion in private

David Coote's been officially sacked by PGMOL.

FA's investigation into aggravated breach of conduct is ongoing. Same with the powder and yellow card allegations (both of which grain of salt)

Well he’s been sacked so he can’t influence things in that manner, plus I mean people would quickly notice that he was performing notably badly and pull him from matches regardless. Perhaps assuming that the stress of the investigation saw him unable to perform well, or something like that.

Fans speculate baselessly all the time that x ref hates their team, at least my proposal would (imperfectly) try to quantify that.

Any thoughts from Asians or Aussies on how the Saudis got awarded a World Cup?

For me, it absolutely stinks to high heaven. ‘Oh btw you have a month to prepare a World Cup bid for a tournament 10 years away, can’t do it haha guess it goes to Saudi Arabia.’

FIFA’s Technical Committee also awarded the Saudi bid the highest score ever. I don’t doubt they could host a tournament, but that’s complete bollocks. They don’t currently have the requisite number of stadiums for a start.

I’m just picking England as one example, there are obviously more. A country with so many stadiums of requisite quality, both concentrated in clusters or spread out regionally that they’re basically the only country on Earth who can sustain professional football down 3-4 tiers.

Just infrastructure alone, never mind bringing ‘the home of football’ into it, but Saudi Arabia’s current bid was considered a better option than multiple English ones.

I’m not even against regionally rotating the World Cup, but it comes at the same time FIFA are further expanding it so that very few countries can actually host one.

But it’s this layer of such obvious, blatant corruption or indulgence of sport washing that really sticks in the craw. It’s not even subtle! They could have given it to Saudi Arabia and it’d still annoy me, but they go that extra mile and claim that of all World Cup bids ever, Saudi Arabia is best set. Come the fuck on
