That Arsenal game was so poor. They barely threatened West Ham's goal at all and looked vulnerable as anything on the counter. I guess Arsenal won. But I keep hearing a lot of "Arsenal are heading in the right direction" talk and I'm not really seeing that at all. Liverpool's nervousness is getting fun to watch. The Atheltico game is going to be huge. Crucial point for Brighton at Wolves sees them edge 2 points clear of the relegation places and it's significant in Wolves no Champions League ambitions. I can't sleep so I'm going to watch Mourinho's continuing efforts to rot Tottenham out from the inside.

Of course a foul at the edge of the penalty area of Barca is not even reviewed, but we are used to these things, so whatever. Sometimes I wonder why are they still using VAR... Unless of course this is their idea of "using" VAR.

You should probably explain a bit more in detail, how this application was conflicting the rules regarding VAR.

There are 4 reviewable situations: a) goals - was there a rule violation by the scoring team leading to the goal b) penalties - was there a foul inside the box yes/no c) potential red card incidents d) mistaken identity And that offside falls under neither of them. a) It would only be reviewable if it was a goal (so not fouling inside the box and just letting them walk the ball into the goal would have worked here...) b) only applies to fouls inside the box, not the build up c+d) are irrelevant So from everything you said so far, I still don't see the issue.

If the system is applied the way you describe, quite honestly, we are better off without it.

The problem I see(again, if the system is applied the way mahrgell, described, which I think is not the case.) is that they are ignoring human logic and the rules of the game while blindly following the VAR directives.

So unless I misunderstand you, this is wrong, an offside in the direct buildup to the penalty could be reviewed because it is part of the situation/direct buildup. However in this particular situation there is no offside. Vidal is passively offside during the freekick and then the attempted clearance that goes to him creates a new situation.

Strange that that United goal did not need VAR review. Without a replay it seem Martial was a little bit ahead...maybe from the replay it was clear.

It's the way passive offside has been interpreted for years, Vidal doesn't actively participate in the play from an offside position until the clearance and the clearance creates a new situation in play. Thus no offside, blame the rule/the interpretation of it, not the referee/VAR for getting it exactly as he is supposed to. Yeah that pretty much sums up my understanding of the situation aswell. Once a new passage of play is in place thats not a reviewable event anymore.
